Because it's far better than any other MMOs I'm guessing; from the way you talk you sound as if you haven't played it or any other MMOs anyway.

It's probably the one with the biggest advertising fund and most word of mouth from old Warcraft RTS players.

I can't truly explain it, only guess.

Well, most of WoW veterans are or were huge fans of the original RTS games. And they had a very compeling story line. WoW took that story and expanded it exponentially. I have been a WoW subscriber since the start of the game and I still love the story, the lore and the characters.

That and it's easy to play

Partly because it started off with a big fanbase.

A lot of people who played Diablo II and the Warcraft series got WoW, Diablo players because it was a Blizzard RPG, and thus similar to what they played already.

From there, obviously, a large part of MMOs is being with your friends. So, the larger a game is in terms of popularity when it launches, the more it's going to snowball.

Simple, end-game content kept up with by continuously added content through patches.

I've played Guild Wars before, the game pretty much turned into an economy game as the only thing you had left to do was gather huge amounts of money and hoard vanity items. I hear pretty much the same thing about EveOnline. Leveling your character is fun, but if the game is over soon after you get to the highest level and/or there's little to no means of further character advancement (GW gave you the best armour for money as soon as you got to lvl20, or even earlier if you got run to the right place), there's not much to do in an MMO.

I played it and I found no difference. to me it was very routine:start a quest,GRIND GRIND GRIND,finsh quest, receive reward, start new quest,GRIND GRIND GRIND.basically all you do is GRIND and GRIND just like most mmo's(there are exceptions)

Because Blizzard is populated by savants who know how to make the most addictive gameplay possible. Seriously.

Combine this with a pre-existing fanbase, good marketing, polished release and the fact that success breeds success for MMOs.

Uh, because it's good? And addictive? It's a bit obvious isn't it. It's the same reason lots of people buy other games, like Modern Warfare.

You can grind to get cool stuff, or you can enjoy the game as you level and attempt to get to grips with your class, then once you (eventually) hit the endgame you can land running and quickly gear up. Grinding is barely feasible if you're in a decent guild, what with all the events etc. they'll run.

I quit because I was getting poor, and I could buy many better games for the same price. If you're rich and can't figure out MSN, WoW's fantastic.

Re-typing a pretty big post... Damn internet!
Thousands of quests, huge gameplay area, with a pretty big variety.
The proffessions are great, and can be very different to any other MMO's.
The Auction House functions very well, as well as the social interaction with players, and there are so many.
The ability to re-play again and again for most people.
The massive choice of what to play as (Race/class). The character customisation is pretty good, with Jewelery, facial expression, colour and unique ones for the other races.
The huge ammount of skills for the classes.
The graphics are pretty amazing on Ultra.
The high end content is brilliant, as well as the low end stuff aswell.
It's constantly changing/being fixed, with patches, and so many expansions really.
The tutorial works very well, so easy to get into.
The battle grounds work really well, so it's fun to just go in those and kill things.
The team work for dungeons help with it, as people won't always just want to grind, or even just do damage (Tanking/Healing).
The GM's are friendly and pretty helpfull, which is always a plus.
The great amount of different items, or different TYPE of items.
It almost always sticks to a very clever lore, which some people like to read.
But most of all, it got lucky. It started the craze with this stuff, and any other MMO after it that resembles it gets labeled as a "Copy".

(Edit: I'm not trying to say it's perfect, it can get boring and repetetive, but hey, some people play it for hours and hours a day, and don't find it bad at all)

You know you don't even need to grind for leveling purposes anymore, right? You can get to 80 with just quests. Which tend to amount to more than just killing a given number of mobs after BC came out.

And the game is addictive. And fun.

Also, I have since stopped caring about the lore in Warcraft. An MMO is simply not a good medium for telling a story.

I imagine much of it has to do with the community aspects in comparison with the gameplay grind, not to mention the constant updates to the game world and landscape.

Incredibly good game, it carries on an incredible story i've been following for years, and simply it is the greatest MMORPG every created.

Except it seems like you just experienced the leveling up content - a very small part of the game. Except for a slightly better experience to max level, what differentiates WoW from the other MMO's is its endgame. While not perfect, it is better than every MMO for every type of person (casual, raider or pvp'r it doesn't matter, it's still the best).

Plus it also has by far the best story and game world.

As someone who has played more MMOs than any human ever should, including WoW, it really does nothing a whole lot better or different that hasn't been done in previous games. I've always wondered why it was so popular.
