I think also partly, that it's fairly easy at least until you hit 80 and start raiding (please don't flood with 'lol raiding is sooo easy'), it's my opinion.
You don't get heavily penalised for any mistakes, and you get all sorts of rewards and achievments for any kind of playstyle you choose. It makes you feel like you're doing well, instead of repeatedly slapping you in the face for sucking, for about the same level of ability. It also gently teaches you stuff without walls'0'text, and you can play all the way thru to early raiding without referring to websites to learn about specifics and statitistics.
A lot of people are just hateful towards a huge success and want to believe that WOW sucks because it's popular, just because Justin Beiber and Simon Cowell are popular with millions.
As for the grind, didn't Halo just have you shoot stuff from the first room to the last? does Madden not just have you run forward with a ball for hours on end? Hell you can break Portal down to jumping and shooting holes in stuff if you want to mindlessly criticise.
I'm not denying there's some grind in there, but mostly it's avoidable, and if you stop enjoying it, it's probably time to move on to a new game.
