Why has there never been an attempted Steampunk game?

I got to thinking about this the other day. A free roaming, or even linear game with Steampunk as the central theme would be awesome. It lends itself so well because you could have all these zany gameplay elements and gadgets and they'd be totally believable because of the universe they were set in.

Imagine having a huge sprawling Victorian Londonesque city. It could be in it's own "world" so you wouldn't have to bother with our history and stuff. For the main character, let's say you're a private detective. You're hired by some woman to find out why her husband was killed. It all turns out in the end that he worked on some super secret weapons program (all of which would be steam powered, of course.)

You have this enormous city or several cities that you can visit and explore. There could be many ways of getting around, from steam powered car type creations to more wacky things like that steam wheel motorcycle thing in Steamboy. There could be massive trains that work like bullet trains but run on steam, special guns that work on steam (but aren't the pew pew kind, but more a BOOOOOM kind.)

Maybe you could also get around with steam powered gadgets, like some kind of spring heeled shoe (in a reference to Spring Heeled Jack...the legend not the book.) You could have airships with cannons to defend them with if you so chose (or as the story would require.) You could have massive crazy weapons that required tons of manpower and steam, and have puzzles that revolve around levers and valves.

You could have a huge open world with all these things that you could do even though the story wouldn't require it, just for the heck of it. It wouldn't have to be GTA set in a Steampunk world, either...maybe a little more like Skyrim set in a Steampunk world.

It just seems like it'd work so well. Not just because more people are getting into Steampunk now days, but because it could be an original and interesting experience. The world of Steampunk doesn't have to follow the laws of natural technological evolution. Anything you can think of can be made with enough levers, valves, and steam. The game could be a fun "detective" game or at least hold some of that "class" that some Steampunk settings have, with the characters able to be interesting and fun without having to worry about "the real world."

Does anyone agree? Are there any good Steampunk games? Did you actually read this whole thing? Do you have the ability to make games and want to turn this into a real thing? Will our heroes survive? Can Batman outwit...oh. I got carried away.

You realize they had firearms during the Victorian era right?

Erm, Bioshock? It may not be strict Victorian London, but pretty much everything is powered by steam gadgetry. In Bioshock2: Minerva's Den they even have a difference engine (computer) run off of steam.

Well, it's a fairly niche genre, especially when compared to space marines and USA vs Terrorists/Russia.

Bioshock Infinite does look a little steampunk-ish, although it's more early 1900s than Victorian era.

Well personally I don't need the Victorian era setting for Steampunk to work for me, but it's part of the genre. Plus, I was trying to think of a way to make it different than EVERY game out there where you have a gun. Like The Darkness, where you have regular guns and they're awesome, but eventually you get "Darkness Guns" which are so much more fun to use.

Bioshock is cool but I'm not too into shooters, and while the atmosphere and setting was AWESOME and very Steampunkish, it was more of a shooter than anything. I'd like to see something else than a shooter in that setting. I think it could be fun.

If there was a way I could credit you as being totally awesome, without just saying "This guy is totally awesome!" I would. Seriously, thanks for those links, I had only heard of the Thief series, and I didn't know it had Steampunk elements in it!

All of these sound pretty interesting and luckily I can play them all on my computer. You have just given me several things to look into. I wonder if Steam (which could be considered ironic) has any of these for sale. Hmm...

Don't mention it. It's the people who created such games are to be praised.

As for Thief. Yes, some argue about the genre it belongs to. I think that overall impression is more important than some details. I'm with those people who recognize Garret's reality as world entering the age of steam. It's still in its infancy period, but it's growing very fast.
Marching on the steel feet of primitive automatons each day a little closer and closer... ;)

P.S.
Plenty of people from the Escapist play Echo Bazaar. It's the browser based card game taking place in thrice damned Steampunk version of London. I encourage you to give it a try. It's worth it.

I also recall a number of old...old...OLD school PC Adventure games in the Steampunk theme...unfortunately I'm too doped up on cough medicine to recall any specific titles, I just have vague memories of them. God I hate being sick. xP

One game I know for sure that could easily be considered Steampunk and not a shooter: Final Fantasy 6. :p

Ah I see. I haven't ever actually been to GOG, I should check them out. I still need to finish Skyrim on my PS3 first though :D.

Haha, I'm on ammoxicillin for a double ear infection (all the way across my hearing) so I know how you feel. I've played a bit of FF 6 but not enough to really get into it. One of my friends
REAAALLY likes it, lol.

Gah, double ear infection? That's gotta suck. I'm sporting a sore throat/mild cold/bubbling stomach...was up every 15-30 minutes last night with a coughing fit and, of course, every time I coughed my sore throat would hurt even more...which only prompted more coughing. I assure you that I am indeed quite miserable at the moment. xP

But yeah, FF6 is easily within my top 3 FF games. Great story, great setting/world, great game mechanics...it was one of the classics made back in the day when Squaresoft still knew how to make a good RPG...and not fill it with a bunch of emo sissies with crazy hair and wardrobes that look like they had a bad run-in with a table saw. I would highly suggest playing it all the way through.

Well, Damnation is described as a "steampunk shooter". Though the only think I know about it, is that it had negative reviews.

Then there's Steambot Chronicles, but despite the name, the influence of fictional steam-powered mechanics isn't that prominent. Well, except for the titular Steambot itself, maybe...

What this guy says. Though, personally, I would consider Final Fantasy IX to be even more steampunk (and much more impressive in the visualization of fictional steampunk technology - just check out Lindblum). You could even see it as some sort of "steampunk origin" story, as the technology to use steam-powered engines in flying ships is the "next big thing" in the world of Final Fantasy IX.

Be warned, however, that it doesn't limit itself to steampunk. There's also a lot of hi-fantasy, Renaissance influences, medieval influences and even a tad of cyberpunk.

I made a thread similar to this about a year ago with the tile 'would you like a steampunk rpg' and the answer was a resounding yes with the naysayers saying that it might not sell well.

Frankly someone needs to pick up the license to Arcanum. It was an old game with similar graphics to the old Fallout games by Troika. At the time the game fell under the radar, was buggy and lost money for the company (which I guess put everyone else off). The game universe includes a sprawling victorian city called Tarant and has items like bullet deflecting top hats and sniper scope monocles. It also balanced magick and technology as like a sliding scale so you couldn't use magical items (or they would randomly miss or not work) if you put your skills into tech etc.

It's an awesome IP and universe and I can only dream that someone influential picks up the game one day.

You should try Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It's a massive steampunk RPG from 2001. Think Baldur's Gate or Fallout in a steampunk/fantasy setting. I'm not sure where you can get it these days though. I kinda hate myself for losing the play disk, it's a really great game.

Get Arcanum.

Seriously, it's an awesome game. Make sure you install a bug fix patch though, since with all Troika games it is extremely buggy.

Thief and Arcanum are classic steampunk games. Don't forget the upcoming Dishonored, too.
