For me it wasn't repulsive so much as unnecessary.

But I'm suprised they're still making them, honestly.

I loved it when I was 10. Don't watch it now, but I don't really mind it.

It had its moments and I found it funny, simply because of the fact that I can separate fantasy from reality. It's obviously not real and therefore completely guilt-free, as I said on the review of Splatterhouse I'm one of those types of people who enjoy the sicker side of the human condition; sex and violence both fascinate and amuse me when they're played out in fiction and also in reality, especially when you consider the psychological, social and intellectual implications either/all of these acts may have.

I actively seek out cult horror films for that very reason; the bad acting and overblown sex and violence make for very entertaining viewing because every action and reaction are so overblown and withdrawn from reality that they cross the line into absurd. Equally the premises presented are also laughable, despite knowing that it's a fantasy that we've all had at one point in out lives (everyone has thought about what it would be like to kill someone and how they'd do it) it easily crosses the line into humour simply because of that tiny grain of truth to it, which is the basis for all good comedy.

However, HTF doesn't hold up to the social commentary and dark humour of Neurotically Yours that ?if you're able to understand basic subtext? will make you both laugh and think. It's definitely has superior quality to it in terms of content, however if you're too sheltered to deal with the facts of life then don't go bursting your protective bubble and avoid such shows at all costs since I doubt you'd like to peel back the candy-coated fantasy world we think we're living in to see the rotten truth at its core.

I fail to see the discussion. This is more appropriate as a blog post.

For discussion value, I like the series but only in low doses. The shock value lasts all of 10 seconds and then it is really like watching a blood filled version of Wiley Coyote, you are only waiting to see the next preposterous situation.
^

I enjoy it just because it is so silly and over the top.
I think I'll go watch a few shorts now while I fire up Splatterhouse and torrent Saw XVIII

I could understand this, to a certain extent, that if such gratuitous violence was used to make a point, or to be ironic, or SOME kind of symbolism, but there is none. People think it's FUNNY. FUNNY!?
Ok, you have a point.
I am not enthusiastic about this series either. However, have you ever watched "fail" videos? Have you find those funny? If yes, then people who find HTF funny feels the same way...
In past old days (not so long) in the 90s, many children would laugh from Tom & Jerry. I would never, specially when that mouse exploded something from the cat.
It is a matter of taste.

I hate happy tree friends although some of the less gorey stuff I watched did seem to be amusing at first.

I've seen two HTF vids. My reaction for the both of them was roughly the same.

"That's some fucked up shit. Now, was I not paying attention, or was there literally no point to what just occurred in front of me?"

Haven't really watched any more of them since then.

I just don't watch it because it seems to be kinda pointless and I don't see the appeal of gore anyway.

Though I liked this Saw-like scetch. Y'know... where the blue Moose has to cut his leg off and then after finishing realizes it was the wrong leg. That one was pretty funny, the rest is just stupid. Plus it's on MTV, a program I generally despise.

"personally I can't stomach it"

Theres your answer. There's no arguing with you because you, personally, do not like it. That's fine.

I, personally, find it funny. I'm not a huge fan by any means, but it's worth a chuckle. The entire point of it is as a parody of the classic "slapstick" cartoons, i.e. "This is what cartoons would be like if the violence was real."

If you can't stomach gore then you're obviously not going to enjoy it, but don't act so shocked that people other than you have different tastes. Also, please don't refer to the recent "gore movie" trend as "horror" because it just isn't. ;)

I guess you must really hate The Itchy & Scratchy Show, too?

Personally, I used to love the Happy Tree Friends. Haven't watched it in ages though.

happy tree friends never meant to have a message or be necessarily funny or anything, it's just supposed to be shocking

if you can't deal with that, they've done their job

Wait, I said I liked it :(
At time of posting, meaning when I was writing my post. In other words you hadn't posted yet.

That's O.K, I personally like it. It's funny to see normally peaceful, happy innocent creatures be horribly dismembered.

Well in anycase different people like different things, if you don't like it, fine don't watch it. But some people find it HILARIOUS. (Like me)
i think the reason most people dislike it is because the characters just lack personalty
What are you talking about all the characters are given personality in subtle way. Lumpy for example is a dumbass moose, Flippy is a bear that has a tendency to flip out when he's reminded of his past fighting in the W.A.R.

I dislike it intensely when people put periods in the O and K in ok. I've got nothing against you dude, just sayin, it's a pet peeve.
O.K then. *Snicker*

No but seriously I've just gotten used to putting the period there. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't but that's just how I've always done it, okay?

Like I said: unrealistic. I've seen the aftermath of a body through spinning blades, yes. It's nowhere near as clean and comical in real life as that cartoon (also, I've met a man who survived being sucked through an airplane turbine). Even just the aftermath of a hanging suicide is far worse than anything that show has ever done, and I've seen more than one of those.
Are you one of the people who cleans up after someone dies? (I forgot the name of the profession)

OF COURSE real violence is worse than a cartoon! Seeing a cartoon character skinned alive and than their head being pulled slowly through the drain of a kitchen sink is nowhere NEAR as bad as seeing any type of REAL violence! And I sincerely hope your a part a clean up crew, and that is implied since you said "aftermath", but.... still.
P.S,
Do you wear a mask, or do you sometimes just have to deal with smell of dead bodies?

Sorry bout the late reply: had shit to do yesterday.
The neighborhood I occasionally saw dead people in was a part of North Portland in the 80s and 90s, I've had to assist combat medics with cleaning up messes and identifying people, and I've witnessed a few accidents involving heavy machinery.
