As a sick and twisted, fucked up human being I can say I don't hate it but I just don't find it funny. The shock humour is shocking but it forgets the punchline in the same way maybe less graphic cartoons with similar humour styles have, such as Tom and Jerry

Saw wasn't that graphic and I am yet to see Hostel. What is in Martyrs?
Go watch Saw 3 and tell me that angel trap isn't gory. Let me sum up hostel for you, rich people pay to torture and kill travellers in creative ways, the most gruesome being; a blow torch to the eye, being eaten alive (and having bits slowly cut off) and death by hooks. Some pretty nasty shit but not nearly as bad as Serbian Film

I haven't seen a full episode, but it is very graphic for a cartoon. from what I have seen anyway.

I can see how it entertains people but personally I think it's just stupid.
I tend to view Web original series in general as being like this, and I'm honestly disappointed in the Internet, which had so much potential to elevate the level of mankind, being a prime example of how the lowest common denominator reigns supreme.

Stupid Internet.

I hate it. I'm really not good with that sort of violence at all. It puts me on edge for hours afterwards.

Happy Tree Friends is as much post-modernist parody as it is an ironic examination on the widespread acceptance of cartoon violence. I would say these factors exceed the black comedy in merit, as the latter's entwining with a little too much slapstick humour rather spoiled it for me.

The gore is a way to comment on shows like Loony Toons and Tom and Jerry in which quite dramatic violent acts are carried out upon characters but never have any realistic effects, even in the face of dismemberment and a character being, for example, sliced up. I find it amusing that the only reason we consider Happy Tree Friends to be 'worse' is that it shows the blood, and perhaps a degree more eye scream.

Real life is way worse, you probably shouldn't go outside.
Spoken like a true man whose never gone outside himself.

I've been outside plenty of times, and I've never once been horribly marred or gored.

But OP, a friend showed this to me some 6-7 years ago, and back then it just made me cringe and was too much for me. And I happened to enjoy the first two Saw movies, and nothing I have seen in a film has come close to Happy Tree Friends. I still don't see how its funny.

Why is Saw ans Hostel always mentioned when it comes to shock and graphic cinematography?

Has no one seen Martyrs?
Maybe next time think before you post.

Its because Saw and Hostel are very popular and well known and have nation-wide theater releases with millions spent on advertising. Whereas the movie you just said seems to be relatively obscure compared to the aforementioned movies.

I don't even really mind the violence (though it's pretty fucked up at times), I mind the complete lack of talent it displays.

Happy Tree Friends reminds me of a 2-year old banging on a pan for attention.

Also, the whole "look, it's adorable forest critters killing eachother in horrible ways"...That isn't just retreading old ground, it's fucking bulldozing it.

I completely agree. There is nothing to it apart from the violence and to be honest I think it's kinda fucked up to get enjoyment out of pure gore without any meaning or necessity to it.

It's Black comedy. Don't take it so seriously, the fact is - people are intrigued by all that is sick, and frankly some of the stuff in there is disgusting, but so is life. I mean shit like Hostel probably HAS happened - and far worse; this is just a funny little cartoon.

(BTW, never actually seen Hostel - I'm assuming violent torture, etc.?)
It's not black comedy simply because there's no comedy to it. Unless you find it comical to watch little stuffed animal things get killed in very bloody ways. That might work for one joke, but that's all there is to the show, it's just repeating that same not-very-good joke over and over again.

Well, I always saw Hapy Tree Friends as a parody of cartoon violence shown in cartoons like Tom and Jerry. When you think about it, its just a real life version of Itchy and Scratchy. Besides, it was Mel Brooks who said "When someone gets a paper cut, thats a tragedy. When someone falls down a manhole and dies, thats comedy".
it´s when I get a paper cut, thats a tragedy. When someone falls down a manhole and dies, thats comedy

For me it wasn't repulsive so much as unnecessary.

But I'm suprised they're still making them, honestly.

It had its moments and I found it funny, simply because of the fact that I can separate fantasy from reality. It's obviously not real and therefore completely guilt-free, as I said on the review of Splatterhouse I'm one of those types of people who enjoy the sicker side of the human condition; sex and violence both fascinate and amuse me when they're played out in fiction and also in reality, especially when you consider the psychological, social and intellectual implications either/all of these acts may have.

I actively seek out cult horror films for that very reason; the bad acting and overblown sex and violence make for very entertaining viewing because every action and reaction are so overblown and withdrawn from reality that they cross the line into absurd. Equally the premises presented are also laughable, despite knowing that it's a fantasy that we've all had at one point in out lives (everyone has thought about what it would be like to kill someone and how they'd do it) it easily crosses the line into humour simply because of that tiny grain of truth to it, which is the basis for all good comedy.

However, HTF doesn't hold up to the social commentary and dark humour of Neurotically Yours that ?if you're able to understand basic subtext? will make you both laugh and think. It's definitely has superior quality to it in terms of content, however if you're too sheltered to deal with the facts of life then don't go bursting your protective bubble and avoid such shows at all costs since I doubt you'd like to peel back the candy-coated fantasy world we think we're living in to see the rotten truth at its core.

I fail to see the discussion. This is more appropriate as a blog post.

For discussion value, I like the series but only in low doses. The shock value lasts all of 10 seconds and then it is really like watching a blood filled version of Wiley Coyote, you are only waiting to see the next preposterous situation.
^

I enjoy it just because it is so silly and over the top.
I think I'll go watch a few shorts now while I fire up Splatterhouse and torrent Saw XVIII

I could understand this, to a certain extent, that if such gratuitous violence was used to make a point, or to be ironic, or SOME kind of symbolism, but there is none. People think it's FUNNY. FUNNY!?
Ok, you have a point.
I am not enthusiastic about this series either. However, have you ever watched "fail" videos? Have you find those funny? If yes, then people who find HTF funny feels the same way...
In past old days (not so long) in the 90s, many children would laugh from Tom & Jerry. I would never, specially when that mouse exploded something from the cat.
It is a matter of taste.

I hate happy tree friends although some of the less gorey stuff I watched did seem to be amusing at first.
