How steep are the system requirements? Lotro chugged a bit on my system, but it plays WoW and Half life 2 well. It has 1gb of RAM and an Nvidia 7300 GS. If I can run it, I will likely buy it.
Last year with my 600 dollar stimulas check I went to wal-mart and bought a 498 dollar dell off the shelf and thats what I play DDO on. I haven't added any memory or anything. I have to play with the graphics on the low setting but my play is usually pretty smooth. Occasionally I lag down in a huge fight with lots of crowd control and fire walls and arrows flying but most of the time I have no issues. A lot of people complain about lag but other than the occasional spike and the aforementioned huge battles I haven't had much lag trouble.

Most of what has been said in this thead is dead on. I really love that it is DnD and has a FPS feel to the combat.

Another thing is that I am a casual player and have 5 capped characters and have run all the end game raids on elite. You can't do that in most MMO's. If you aren't in a dedicated raiding guild and schedule your life around the raids in other MMO's, you can forget about it.

For those who are trying it, thanks for giving it a shot. Be patient, ask questions - especially if you aren't familiar with DnD character building. Hope you find it as fun and challenging as we do.

@ epaulet, don't let that thread scare you. I was a major participant in that thread and there are good arguments on both sides. If you ask around, check forums and use the planners, you should be fine. "Most" of the rebalancing done by the devs have not seriously gimped characters, but it may have caused them to be different than the player intended. The Devs are looking into ways to help out with the respec issues. You also have 10 character slots to play with on every server. That is plenty of space to experiment with until you get something you like to play.

Well, I didn't like it when I first played it, but it does sound like a big improvement from then, so maybe I'll come back.

Hopefully this time I'll have fun.

You know, this game has so many idiosyncrasies that sometimes you can be horribly facinated and others horribly annoyed! But I have only found 1 other game ever that held my attention, my interest, and my time as much as DDO. There is just so much to do in so many ways that here I am over a year of playing and still trying to get online daily to play.

So am I the only person who can't access the Trial account page?
my recollection is that there were some authentication errors going on for a while last night, because of that they closed down the account and billing site, and that would include the free trial part. I know they are pushing to have it cleared up, most of the authentication errors have been fixed and folks are logging into game noramlly, with exception of few folks. once that is cleared up i'd imagine theyll pop open billing and account site.

Conversation was heading to tomorrow if they get that all working normally, however i'm just reading from the forums. I dont believe LOTRO has been affected, if you wanted to bounce that direction, still free and i think i remember you mentioning that one as well, either way hang in there and we'll see you in game. If you end up on khyber, send me pm here and i'll do what i can to help ya.

I guess that would explain it then. Thanks. I'm already an active LOTRO player but I wanted to try DDO. Figures that the day I want to try it I can't make an account. Turbine has a knack for screwing me over with downtime like that I suppose. I'll try again another time.

The account website seems to be working for me... Even the account creation for LOTRO trials works fine.

Wow... they really do give DDO LOTRO's left overs. =/

The trial site is not working for me to make a trial account... hmmm... any way I can link a trial to my existing LOTRO subscription?

EDIT: So it's somewhat working now... most of the images show up on the page. But now it is telling me to copy the text on an image that won't load. Turbine can not be serious.
Are you still having issues? One of us may be able to send you a trial pass via the invite system. Or... you know, I may still have my original box that came with pass keys.

And Lorichie is correct about the authentication/billing. Talk about bad luck timing really, but not much anyone can do about it.

I already sent him a key from the launcher thing. He should be good to go.

Mod 9, anyone? There shall be joyous shouts in the street as DDO fans come together and sing their jubilations that there is a new loading screen :)

Well, you guys convinced me, I am a long time player of MMo's which sometimes regrets ever leaving everquest because none of the games since have been able to catch that magic. (as flawed magic it was, but magic all the same)

I have done the World of warcraft (yawn)
Everquest 2
Vanguard
Lineage 2
Eve
Age of Conan
Warhammer online
A few more as well.

So I got my trial key today and started to create an account, and whoo hooo.

"The system cannot create your account at this time". Looking up the error code on the DDO site it seems like its related to credit card billing. But hold, on this is a trial and I didnt even get an option to set a card up.

Not a very good first impression.

Anybody got any ideas?

So I completed the newbie island and arrived in Stormreach..
What do I do now Q_Q
Run around, have a looksie, find the two taverns in the harbor, talk to everyone, grab all the quests and jump on in, look at who panel if theres a group lit up it means its within your level range and your class and you can join them, click on group then on bottom click on join. be sure to tell them you are new tho, avoid groups at this point that say, "fast, zerg only, know quest."

There was an issue with the billing services for a while, so they took it down to fix it, it should be fixed as of this moment tho. Unless i missed something on the site saying it was down again, ill check.

I'm going to throw my 2 cents in. I have tried almost all mmo games available and none has kept my attention and interests as DDO has. The character generation and setup is close enough to the pen and paper game that seasoned veterans can jump in and create online versions of their rpg characters and people who are not so knowledgeable can follow the paths and create a very effective character. There are soooo many awesome people who play and the game itself seems to attract a very mature player base, which makes sense because so many people played the rpg back in the 80s.

That being said, if you are looking for a game that stimulates your mind as much as your attack finger, DDO is for you! Kudos to Turbine for making the only game that has kept my attention for so long.

This last week has been rough for Turbine. After the Data Center move to give us better performance in game, the account servers (which did not move) screwed up. That has caused a week of hard log ins, no log ins, etc. They finally got it fixed Friday.

So IF you were going to give DDO a try, now is the time to dl, all the crap is over.

There will be some downtime on Monday for maint, but that is from 7am est to 12pm est.

Also the new Mod will be available to check out on the new test server Monday.
