I'm from America and America is not awesome in any way. This land was stolen from the Native Americans who were nearly wiped out and so very few remain. America is just one big bully out for global dominance.

That doesn't answer the question. I'll be damned if I work my ass off and then have to give 50% of my hard earned money to some welfare sponging jackass, because he doesn't feel like working.
Laissez Faire is the economic principle of free enterprise. The government takes no action in the operation of businesses or the welfare of it's citizens. It is the most extreme form of capitalism on the social economic scale. Which means no welfare, worker's comp, minimum wage, minimum age for work, FDA or other socialistic ideologies. As for an example, I'll direct you to the industrialization era and third world labor. If you want an actual text, read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair.

Edit: changed political to social
You don't have to quote economic terms to me. I never said Laissez Faire was a good ideology to have. Its an extreme form of economics and extreme forms of anything is not good. Conversly the exact opposite of Laissez Faire isn't good either.

I've already read The Jungle. The first half of it was alright, but the second half was a pathetic attempt at socialist propaganda. And in case anyone has forgotten, everything in the Jungle took place almost 100 years ago. The U.S. has kept almost none of the policies from that time period.

Anyway that point that I was trying to make in my previous post is that the average American (regardless of IQ) thoroughly enjoys their freedom and usually will not give those freedoms up (unless they are astronomically stupid).

Also, the U.S. isn't any better or worse than any other country, and I'm getting tired of all these damn America hating threads. I'm surprised the Mods here don't delete them with the same gusto that they do for anything else that attracts this many trolls.

I will say this though, the U.S.'s time as a superpower is coming to an end. We are trying desperately to hold on to our power, as all superpowers are wont to do.

I think its awesome that the first black president is also a comic book geek.
I am suddenly happy I voted for him. Does anybody know when his inaugural address is?
Odd guess- January 20th??
I have trouble sleeping with the prospect of Obama becoming president, it is the worst thing. No it is not because he is black,I know that is why most people voted for him,I even considered voting for someone twice as Black as Obama.
Can I ask why? I'm not an American but I followed the election pretty closely and I thought he was the best candidate. I liked that his focus was Economy orientated not war orientated.
He doesn't know what he's doing. Let me just say, maybe this will help, but my political philosophy would fall most into a socially conservative Libertarian. He wants to make America Socialist. Why should someone who works hard for their money give it up to someone just so everyone is on the same level? The redistribution of wealth they call it. Places where there is Universal Health care have higher taxes and inferior service. I think he also wants to raise the minimum wage and that will put more people out of jobs because the companies won't be able to hire as much. The thing that strikes my moral core most is his support of post birth abortions.
So, he wants to raise taxes for people with higher paying jobs to help fund health care? That's not sarcasm, that's a legitimate question.

And, what exactly do you mean by 'post birth abortions'?

Why should someone give up their hard earned money unless they choose to on their own free will?
Because Laissez Faire does not work.

I can provide plenty of support for that if you want.
Yes I would like to see your evidence.

As for the healthcare part, isn't Cuba's far better than your's, Britains, or anyone elses for that matter?

how so? According to the WHO, we're ranked 34th overall. We're first in quality, selection, specialization, and a few others. we're ranked 54th in fairness. Healthcare prices here are supposedly too high for a good fairness rating. By extension, competition in the healthcare system isnt fair, either.
I think really I was just pushing for pro cuba there. I believe France and Italy should be first and second, am I right on that?

Ho hum, why do we bother. I am enjoying everyone bashing on the good ol USA. Why bother defending against such idiocy? Why is America so awesome? I will tell you. I have everything I will ever want, and I earned it with my own hands, never having to ask anyone for a hand out. I have never lived in fear of the enemies of my government, nor have I ever feared my own government. I have traveled the world defending this nation, and seen those nations that are apparently so much better than mine, and found them lacking. I have never been negatively affected by any media or government corruption that in any way decreased my happiness or standard of living. Is my nation wealthy? You bet, and it shows in the %GDP that my government gives to all of you. Are my peers wealthy? You bet, and it shows in the charitable donations that they give to you, by far the most per capita of any nation.

It is easy to throw stones at the Ivory Tower, but at the end of the day, you all live in it's shadow...
That made me laugh. You guys over extend your budget each year so much so that your health care system is rubbish and your education system lacking. Your country was the butt of every nations jokes since George Bush was first elected. Who the hell are you to say that your country is so much better then everyone elses? America is not without its flaws. Nor is any country.

Sorry, I'm not usually an America basher by any means, I just found this guys post so pretentious it made me ill.
yeah, I can see how our health system is so broken, since I know of TWO people with no insurance and no jobs that are getting absolutely free health care. One a free kidney transplant, the other free care for severe diabetes. The broken health care system argument is broken. it's called medicare and medicaid, and our government is the largest health care provider in our nation. That argument is carried by rich folk who wouldn't know a down on their luck poor person if they tripped over their dead body. Besides, practically every major medical advance has come from the US, so enjoy! But please, continue to bash, I love being on top, looking down at all of you! Have a nice, American influenced day!

The Outstanding Public Debt as of 06 Jan 2009 at 12:47:45 PM GMT is:
$ 10,640,644,915,744.11

The estimated population of the United States is 305,410,748
so each citizen's share of this debt is $34,840.44.

If that's what it takes to be awesome, I'll stay in Blighty.

America is not awesome because it lacks 2 very important things:

The NHS and the BBC.

Mmm free healthcare and Dr Who.

Oh and for every medical advance coming from the US:

Come on over. We like people, despite what you may have heard. :)

Americans, as a people, are different because of our notion of the 'melting pot' culture. Are we physically or socially "Superior"? Well, errr.....NO.

Do we celebrate our achievements? Yeah, and we should.

I think too much is made of the Americans that go around spouting off their opinions as if they were facts, and our media-based culture being thrown in the faces of everyone else world-wide probably doesn't help.

Our government is just as corrupt as any other one, but our system has established checks and balances that keep it in check. The fact that Americans' political mindset is that of a pendelum and we don't vote in three Presidents of the same party in a row also keeps it level.

America's government is no more corrupt than it could be for a nation its size.

As far as Patriotism and Fanaticism goes, Nationalism is in between and we are nowhere near the level of 1936 Germany.

America has plenty of artists; the nature of art is different, nothing more. I worked at a family-owned art gallery for 8 years. We like our stuff. :)

Lastly, no one likes "blind bravado", but you said it best when you mentioned that most of this came from the 13-year-old American kids, etc. I am 29 - most Americans are proud of our nation and our accomplishments.

We like other peoples, because America is formed of other peoples that have come together for a shared vision of freedom and prosperity.
Very nice answer, leave it to the escapist to find some well informed people with coherent arguments. My opinion is mine and only mine, no one needs to share it, however, as most opinions, it can change I spoke only out of my personal experience in regards to the american country and it's people if I'm mistaken please do forgive me, but, just as I said, opinions are our own and no one elses ;). Still, your answer enlightened me a bit and I may start to think diferently...someday ;P.

I quite like the "you can accomplish anything" optimism american culture appears to have. Here in England most people are pesimistic and cynical. Including me.

I hate obesity. It makes it so hard to find clothes that fit me.(Wal-mart is prejudiced against skinny people)
I thought Greece was first as well.

And America is awesome because I live there. You should all come visit.
It's probably changed since then I guess. *shrugs*

And I will visit if you take me to Disneyland!
I don't know *shrugs*
Disneyland's only 150 miles away. Day trip.

This really isn't much of a discussion anymore, not that there was much to discuss in the first place. Are we going to repeat this thread in 2 weeks? Yeah. Will it be about another country, say, Switzerland? No, probably not. I'm surprised it's even gone on this long. I really don't get how this can stay open when it's just become half misinformed generalizations and thinly-veiled hate of America.

There is a flaw in the OP, a fatal one at that. You ask why America is awesome. Nobody on here was waving a huge flag in your face and trying to run you over with a tractor. Nobody was shouting on the hilltops how awesome we are. But now, it's turned into most people thinking that's exactly what has happened, as we are now on the 7th page and people probably aren't really going back to the first.

Kill this one before it's too late, I implore, as the integrity of the thread has already died.

being born in england but spent the ages 4-14 (in 16 now) in america id say that, just like everywhere else, it has its awesome qualities and it has alot of negative aspects too. for example things are bigger, staff are more courtious and polite, things are reasonably priced.

however there is a big gang culture, people tend to be close minded about the rest of the world (america isnt the only superpower you know), religious fanatics are abundant. the constitution was a great idea , in theory, but people abuse it now to the point that it is being overlooked in many court cases. and another thing, if something happens people want something to sue.

we use up more natural resources than anywhere else. shit i am litterally terrified of what will happen when we run out of oil, the basic foundatioun of the american household is dependent on oil: electricity, run cars, the list goes on.

and before i make any more enemies im going to stop there and finnish by saying:
i dont think america is awesome, or that it is crap. im just saying that, like most countries, it has its positive and negative aspects. and with banks closing and the economy practically falling apart right now, we are all going to see tough times.

Can you back these up with statistical information? Can you quantify the courteousness of staff? If not, why bring it up?

One of your points I would completely disagree with. From what I know, America's college system is by far one of the most corrupt college systems in the world. It doesn't matter how smart someone is, if they don't have the money to get into the top end universities/colleges then they're not going to. It's a system that basically helps the rich people stay rich.
That's not corrupt, it's called capitalism and it's one of the reasons why America's colleges are the top in the world.

And you are very wrong on another point. Universities grant TONS of scholarships and full rides if you are smart/hardworking enough, so your whole point of "it doesn't matter how smart you are" is complete bullshit. I know you probably want to cry out, "OH THE OLD MAN IS JUST KEEPING THE WORKIN' CLASS DOWN" but that's largely an exaggeration. How hard you work in life is far more important than what school you go to. I know plenty of kids who have graduated from top universities but failed in their jobs because they didn't work hard enough. Likewise, I know of people who attended community colleges (where the costs are much cheaper) and have gone on to great jobs because of how hard they worked.

So I don't want to hear the excuse that it's just a way of keeping the rich in power because it largely isn't. If you are smart enough and you work hard enough, you can succeed in your career even if you can't afford to go to a big university.

Just another little thing I wanted to ask was whether or not you've watched any rugby? If I'm being honest I've never sat down to watch a game of American football, but from what I've seen it seems fairly similar to rugby, minus all the padding and helmets.
Quick little history lesson on American football for those of you who don't know.

American football has gone through significant changes since it's appearance in the late 1800's. When the first game of American football was played, the only way you could score was by kicking it; holding or passing the ball was not allowed. This is why the game got it's name football. The earliest games of football were almost exclusively played by colleges against one another.

In the beginning, two different types of the game were played: a version of the game that was similar to soccer and a version of the game that was similar to rugby. However, the version of rugby proved to be the most popular version and the soccer version was largely phased out. It was during the late 1800's to the early 1900's that the game expanded and it's rules began to change. The forward pass was added in the early 1900's because large amounts of fatalities in the game began to pile up.

The game of football continued to morph and change while also gaining larger popularity on a nationwide scale. Eventually the game morphed to what it is now. Instead of kicking the ball, as it was originally played, it has morphed into a game of physical contest of moving the ball on the ground and in the air.

So to answer your question: yes, American football has many similarities to modern rugby because American football started as a mix between rugby and soccer.

And for you foreigners who have never sat down to watch a game, you really should some time. It's a fantastic game that features not only physical strength, but also speed, precision, teamwork, and huge amounts of strategy. I'm not joking when I say that it's pretty much the equivalent of chess in the sports world.
Yeah sorry about the college system part. Someone already quoted me on it, explaining pretty much what you said. My American friends at university are just exaggurating me thinks...

Thanks for the info on American football. I would sit down and watch a game sometime but over here in England they never broadcast the sport. Ah well, rugby's still my favourite sport and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon. Another quick question. What are the crowds like at American football games? I mean is it common for there to be trouble?

ok first of all, its an opnion. seccondly i know that in some places it is bad, but im speaking generally.

and my evidence is:

in the U.S. if you severely do not like your meal or there is some sort of a problem, the staff deal with it in an appropriate manor, i.e. apologising getting the manager, knocking the item off your bill all while in a polite and gracious manor..

however when i was in glasgow, Scotland, (a nice part of glasgow) my drink arrived with not a cube of ice and the drink was warm, so i politely aksed the waitor if it would be possible to get some ice for my drink. the waiter looked at me as if i was an idiot, literally laughed in my face, and walked off. this happened to me on more than one occasion and the waitors/waitresses are always discourtious

that is my OPINION of the matter, and no i cannot back it up with statistics because it is my OPINION. you cannot only use statistics in an argument like this when you are saying how good you "think" a place is.
