I'm waiting until there's enough successful titles by Eastern European developers to replace all the games in the pic.
I think we're going to see that trend develope further over the next 10 years. Seriously. We already have 2 big leaguers right now (GSC and 4A), not to mention the growing handful of those still clamboring their way up the ladder (with some note-worthy releases over the last few years).
News flash for those not "in-the-know" on some world-wide gaming trends . . . the RUS gaming market is one of the fastest growing in the world right now, and is poised to quickly start competing with the big markets (US, Europe and China/Japan). Thing is, about 98% of their gaming market is PC. Console make up only a very small portion of their gaming market (which is why the console manufacturers have had a very hard time edging themselves into this market). The Russian Game Developer's Conference is the second largest such conference held annually, only surpassed by the US developer's conference. Users in RUS want a system that's more flexible and versatile, where-as consoles are more "specialized," they see a better "bang-for-the-buck" out of purchasing a PC than they do a console.
With that, the game developers are well over 90% PC-only. Only recently have some of the larger developers in the RUS market even hinted at any potential console development . . . and this only comes on the heels of their success as their global publishers/distributors are pushing for them to enter the console arena. 4A and GSC Game World are a prime example of this. Only within the last few months have GSC confirmed any development for a console title, and 4A's big backing was their early involvement with development of STALKER . . . but because the majority of their key gaming market is still predominantly PC, their primary focus and attention is on PC development.
IMHO, as the RUS market continues to grow, we should start seeing a resurgance in "PC-only" titles working down the pipe, or titles with consoles taking a "back-seat" during development. If any of these titles do have a console version, there's a much stronger probability it will be only for xBox, and not for PS (thanks to the xBox's hardware configuration, Microsoft and it's OS).
. . . and really, the odd twist to all this info . . . piracy in the RUS gaming market absolutely dwarfs piracy of any other gaming market, yet, the market is gowing at respectable rates.
