cause it gives a challenge. if Demon's Souls had been easy, the game would probably wouldnt have been so rewarding and fun.

I play first person shooters on the hardest difficulty. I feel it is the proper way to play them.

RTSs I generally play on medium difficulty. It seems like the proper way to play them.

RPGs I leave at whatever the default is.

I don't know why I have different completion standards for different genres, but the reason I play on the hardest on FPSs has to do with my older brother referring to all other modes as "pussy mode" throughout my early development as a gamer.

I usually only play a game on hard after I've beaten it on normal difficulty for the first time. To get alternate endings/some replay value out of the game.

Pretty much what others have said, for the challenge.

I always play games on normal first of all so I can get used to it and enjoy most of it's features (the gameplay, the story, the setting, etc), and then once I'm done I'll go back and replay them on the hardest difficulty purely for the challenge, sometimes being frustrated at a game is a good thing, it helps me work out my rage and stay sane in every day life. ^^

I like hard to be a better challenge. I like to see if I can beat it on whatever the devs come up with. However I usually will play a game on normal for fun and on hard for the challenge and to see if hard is actually more difficult or they just abuse the system to the computer's advantage.

The different difficulties are to assure that each player at different levels of gaming experience are still able to enjoy the game without it either being too easy for the common gamer, and too hard for some one who isn't as good as video games.

Guitar hero and Rock Band are prime examples of this... With more than one player in the room. You can clearly see that each player is able to enjoy the same exact game/song, even though each person is playing at a different difficulty level depending on their abilities and skill level.

So to answer as to why I play on hard, I find that playing anything below that difficulty level to be a bit boring considering I am more than capable of handling myself in the gaming realm.

Not to mention it has it's perks as well.. My brother and I beat Army of Two a few weeks ago on professional, and while we ended up dying a LOT, (especially near the end of the game.) We learned to work together as a team and overcome the challenge that the game had presented to us... We felt like champs once those ending credits finally hit, and it was the first time in years where I felt proud of myself for reaching the end of a video game. ((Games these days just don't do that for me anymore ever since they cut down on the difficulty level of gaming a lot to bring in more money..))

Edit: I don't think I'd be as much of a gamer as I am if it weren't for the harder difficulties... Much like how my bro and I probably wouldn't have liked Army of Two so much if we didn't decide to go for the professional difficulty.

Easy isn't fun for me. I try things hard and if it's too hard I make it a bit easier. I've played most of DA:O on Hard (by most I mean I got a long ways in before boredom set in/I got new games), I beat BioShock 2 on Hard first time around, I beat MW2 on Veteran 2nd time through, I just beat BF:BC2 on Hard first time through, oh and Darksider's on Apocalypse first go. On the other hand, God of War 3 on hard (Titan?) beat me to a pulp and I had a good time with it on normal.

I suppose I do it for the challenge, for the bragging rights, and if available, for the acheivements (no hardmode trophy in BF:BC2 =/).

I really hate cruising through a game it's pointless to me. I want challenges and I want to feel like I really needed to put my skill to the test. If it's really too hard, I can accept that and tone it down but I like starting on Hard to see what the game has to offer.

I play it on hard to make it last longer, and it really is more satisfying when you actually struggle through an encounter

Ill learn to play a game on nomal but not finish it. Then restart on the hardest difficulty so im on the edge of my seat the whole time with a high chance im going to die at every corners turn...

Or that damn nade spam in the CoD series is going to land on my feat and 4 more around me. But when you beat something like that. That is acomplishment.

It's a challenge. I tortured myself to beat Gears of War 2 on Insane, but that achievement plus the relief and pride that comes with it definitely made it all worth it.

I like to start out easy than hopefully the game has a feature to bump up the difficulty without having to restart so as I get the hang of it, I can keep moving on up and getting better having a new challenge and enjoying the game on all levels.

simple-
easy mode is for beginners and gamers in it for the visuals
normal mode is a sort of middle ground
hard mode is for hardcore gamers in it for the challenge.
