When I play a shooter I'm there to kill shit, so I play on easy. But when I play puzzle games like portal I like it to be really hard, but not frustrating. Differance being learning the solution and doing it. In portal the puzzles make me think, in braid they test my reflexes more than anything

I would have to say that I almost always complete games on normal first, the up it if it's too easy. But I am the type that will never lower the difficulty once it's been raised, I'll struggle through because that's the way it's supposed to be played (at least for me, I'm just that type of gamer).

Also if you can beat it on hard then it's easier to destroy your friends and enemies online when you decide to.

I play on hard for trophies and achievement points but, I sometimes just skip hard all together. I mainly play for fun as opposed to, for the challenge.

It isn't for achievement points.

Hard is fun! Not so hard you can't play it, but hard enough you have to think fast is great.

Game devs don't seem to realise nowadays that frustration is fun. I spent the last hour having my ass kicked by the bots in Perfect Dark because they're JUST TOO FUCKING FAST and I had the time of my life.

I find hard way more fun than normal, and easy isn't fun at all. Extreme (assuming that game has it) is too much though.
Ignore the parts that aren't bolded. I never play games the first time through on anything but the hardest (If there are completionist bits in it, I'll go through a second sweep on easy just to find 'em), and I rage for the first half of a game if I find out they locked the hardest difficulty(s) (I'm looking at you Army of Two and Prototype). Easy is cake, normal is easy, hard is normal, and insane is an actual challenge. It's not that I'm that good, it's that the game's just that easy. If I want to have fun, I have to play on hard. End of story.

I play on hard just so i can play more, without going to the exact same thing. It also adds a little bit immersion in certain games. Although when it just gets stupid I don't even bother anymore.

the challenge makes it fun, there is nothing more boring than a game that is too easy.

I usually play on the second to hardest on games like CoD, and I usually pick hard from a list of "easy normal and hard".

To have an excuse to play the game again and actually have fun, instead of killing everything I see with just a mean-looking glare.

'Cause when you DO get through the hard parts, you feel awesome.

Depends on the person, depends on the frustration. If you enjoy that, fantastic, but not everyone does, nor should they.

No-one should ever feel bad about turning down the difficulty level. A game is supposed to be fun and entertaining. If you're not enjoying yourself because of some foolish notion that "real" gamers play on hard, that's just silly. It's your experience. Tailor it appropriately and don't worry about what anyone else does.

The converse is also true, of course. If you really enjoy conquering games only after seemingly endless defeats, then that's how you should play, regardless of whether or not other people think you're just a glutton for punishment.

There's no one "right" way to play a game, no matter what people may think.

Some games really shine when played on the hardest difficulty. Fallout 3 was much more enjoyable for me on "Very Hard" since I had to really think about the consequences of my actions and I had to make "evil" decisions just to stay alive. But maybe that's just me.

Its...

"F is for friends who do stuff together,

U is for U and me,

N is for anywhere and anytime at all,

down here in the deep blue sea!"

"F is for fire that burns down the whole town

U's for uranium... bombs

N is for no suvivors when you..."

...unless you are playing Wii!

With the exception of Operation Flashpoint, The CoD series, FPS games don't really challenge me unless I'm playing on the hardest difficulty setting.
