The only thing that acheivments/trophies should be good for is for Online Usage. Say, instead of them being little space wasters, why don't they give you points varieing on how hard the actualy acheivment was? Then let you buy stuff off of Xbox Live or PSN.
I myself am a Playstation lover (i got a PS2 for my Birthday when it came out). I now own my own PS3 and i love it cause it won't brick itself just like my friends 360 did twice in a month. Just thought i'd mention that
Well Mass Effect was one of the first games of this gen. that I saw which had actual in-game effects when you completed achievements, I think we're starting to understand how to use achievements effectively and not just as an e-penis extension - but for the most part it will just be a "to-do list" that will add onto your epenis, depending on how much you've completed.
-and for what it's worth, the Trophies system has a few minor changes but for the e-penis factor they do seem better, since gamerscore just has one huge bundled up score, meaning that someone could have completed a lot of easy achievements, or a few hard ones, but the PSN card shows how much of each difficulty you've completed.
Also I was going to post a pic. of that 360 kid that says "It isn't just beating the games, it's showing everyone online that I did" but I can't find it ;_;
EDIT: Oh, an example, lets say CoD4 gets "trophies" - completing the game once will result in a "bronze" trophy, but beating it on veteran and completing Mile High Club will result in a "Gold" and "Platinum" trophy. I still think they should have in-game effects like a lot of other games do though >_> that's the real motivation for me.
