Funny stuff, haha.

I don't really get the big OS debate or the "elitism" people interpret into it. I for one have no good reason to abandon XP just yet, but I (probably) will when real compatibility issues with software I need/want arise. As long as you're good to your computer and sometimes make sure everything's clean and tidy, it won't just suddenly crash on you either, tho of course there's a general exception to this rule with ANY software on the market, even "Hello World!"-programs. Been there, seen that.

Typical Microsoft fail.

At first I thought it was an unintended glitch, but no, I saw where they listed the supported OS', and its not there. That's really pathetic.

I like the idea of it being gloat-ware. I'd put it on my Windows 7 desktop, but it's going to be awfully boring for a while considering there are almost 3 years before it reaches 0.

But yeah, making it for Vista and 7 only seems a bit silly, but hey, Windows XP doesn't have gadgets. They should obviously find another way to get it working on XP, though.

hell, it's almost worth it just for the ability to drag a window to the side of the screen and have it automatically fill exactly that half of the screen, I use that all the time
I fucking love that feature. My motherboard fried once and while it was off getting repaired/replaced/whatever, I was stuck using an XP machine in the mean time. I was so fucking lost without that feature. :(

XP users are to be blamed for the lack of DirectX 11 support in games. Didn't you know?

...I have learned something new. I knew about the full-screen thing, but not half-screen.

Agree OVER 9000%
Next thing you know cell phone companies will tell me they won't support anything but smartphones.
Now this could be a failing sarcasm detector but... My phone company kind of has pulled support for my non-smartphone phone. Not completely of course but they basically text me saying, all yeah you'll be losing all your features at the end of this week. They're also trying to make me pay extra to upgrade to a phone where I'll actually get what I'm paying for but this is all another matter.

I'm sure I'll integrate with Windows 7 eventually, it justs frustrates me that whenever I try to help a mate out who has it, I can never find anything I need. I get that it's moved but most of the time they've hidden all the genuinely useful stuff and it's all wizard controlled (eg: setting up a wireless network was strangely frustrating as it wants to do everything for you).
I'm going to stop here, its 2am and I've been battling with a broken windows 7 laptop for many moons. This feels very meandering.

Window 7 was the best decision MS made this decade. It doesn't hog memory like Vista did (with Game Booster running, it takes up only about 400MB of RAM in the background of my PC as opposed to Vista's atrocious 1GB). It was a vast improvement over Vista and pushes 64-bit processing, and add in higher RAM allowances and a few nifty things like the slice tool and rotating background selection and you have a fairly good OS. Also, DX11 support.

Give up on XP already - it's a decade old and it's infrastructure was never built to be secure on the internet, which is why it relied so heavily on antiviruses. Hell, Win7 is <url=http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-10444561-245.html>more heavily secured than even Macs.

Halvar Flake, head of research and CEO of Zynamics: "General state of affairs: Vista/Win7 has more extensive countermeasures against attacks and a codebase with presumably fewer security issues.

Rich Mogull, CEO, Securosis: Microsoft has done more in terms of its inherent security features than Apple has in the operating system.

Charlie Miller, a principal analyst at consultancy Independent Security Evaluators: Technologically speaking, PCs are a little more secure than Macs. Macs have a larger attack surface out of the box (Flash, Java, support for a million file formats, etc.) and lack some anti-exploitation technologies found in PCs like full ASLR [Address Space Layout Randomization]. This means Macs have more vulnerabilities and it's easier to turn a vulnerability into an exploit on the platform.

Tyler Reguly, senior security research engineer, nCircle: If you believe the hype and the flashy commercials the answer would be Mac. But if you take a look at the two platforms, and the mindsets of the companies behind them then the PC wins hands down. If you compare Windows 7 to Snow Leopard, then the simple winner is Windows 7. Microsoft brought in teams of security professionals to look at their code and find problems leading to a more secure product while Apple is often criticized for ignoring issues.

And what games aren't you guys able to play on Win7? It has excellent backward compatibility and there's a thing called DOSBOX.
I think I love you. Im bookmarking that page just so I can rub it in mac users faces every time they say "MAC IZ INVULNERABLE! MAC CUN DUFEND GANST ALL VIRESUS!"

I know XP was slick, but let it go. Technology is moving on, and support (clearly as demonstrated) is getting a bit draining.

I know MS do some stupid shit sometimes, but it happens. It's quite funny in this case, because I think it highlights the problem of hanging on to dated tech :D

Vista was an absolute bloated ugly disgrace. I got it for free (via MSDNAA), and I still wanted my money back.

However, windows 7 is marvelous. I really do recommend it. I can honestly say my most favorite Windows experience since a long time of Windows. When a linux distro can reach this mix of ease of use/tidiness/compatibility I will probably have a dual boot by now. But having said that, I don't see the need to right now, it's bloody marvelous.

Am I the only one who liked using Vista? I mean, it came with my laptop, did everything I wanted it too, (Nothing too flashy or what ever) and all I see is hate on it? :/

I was just joking but if cell phone companies are really doing that then I really don't want to keep going into the future. Cell phones were fine before they tried to turn them into laptops.

I've used Windows XP, Vista and 7.

Vista should never have been released. XP and 7 are much more stable than Vista - and if you are using a computer with Vista I recommended doing a backup of all of your essentials and formatting your machine and installing Windows 7 clean and new.

My notebook is an Inspiron 8600. Much too old for Windows 7 and, hence, is running Windows XP and quite nicely. It's good OS for it. However - it is over 5 years old now. My hope is that I will have a new notebook in my hands by 2014 (or a new Desktop PC at least coupled with - say - a portable slate/netbook/tablet with about a 10.1" or so screen). Just need a job to bring in some money first (since funding is going into my wedding at the moment).

My finacee's notebook - whilst being an ACER Extensa 4210 - is running much better on Windows 7 than it ever did on Windows Vista. It's an OS that just seems to work with everything in the house. I've also used it at work and it performed brilliantly.

Windows XP is good. Windows 7 is better (as it should be). By 2014 - well there may be another OS out by then but you should - at least - be using Windows 7 if you decide to use a Microsoft OS.

Oh yes - and get Windows 7 Professional (if you are getting it for home use). Seriously. Ignore the rest (you really don't need Ultimate).

The complete code for it is pretty much out there, so i ASSURE it will keep evolving far past the "expiration" date microsoft gave it by user support im guessin user modified XP is gonna become like LINUX an alternative(XP is the ONLY truly good product theyve ever released and theyr gonna abandon it) i would have been a far more intelligent policy to sell the upgrade packages (service packs) every year (we would be running SP10 now, say 15-25 dollars per upgrade thats like 200 dollars easy PER customer, and whit new customers coming every year it would be a fountain of money (instead of alienating customers whit crappy OS like Vista an even 7 isnt really that hot, well thats one of the benefits of having a monopoly)

I'm still rocking XP sp3 and love it that I have no problem with compatibility on older games.

I will upgrade my computer in a few weeks I will be forced to switch to Windows 7 home edition 64bit.

Goodbye windows XP,you will be missed.

It is longer than 1.76 years till 2014. We still have all of 2012 and 13. Did you mean 2.76?

Why would they make a gadget when XP does not do gadgets?
Very simple. A classic case of EPIC FAIL!

And all I can say to this Microsoft? /Facepalm

What, may I ask, is so wrong with Vista?

I run Vista, I've never had any issues with it to date. Its not slow, its not buggy, and its a solid machine. I cant jutify the extra few hundred dollars for a new OS.

As for XP being discontinued, its hilarious. But meh, people will use illegal copies to keep XP running, since people love it so damned much
