What!? I think it's easily the best map in BF3 and maybe the best map I've ever played in any game. The only complaint I can kind of relate to is that it can be quite uneventful with the 24 player limit on consoles but other than that it's the closest to perfection I've seen when it comes to map design. (I'm referring to conquest on consoles)

Operation Metro and Grand Bazaar on other hand are just horrible. They're trying to deliver the fast paced close quarters action of Cod but with map design worse than any map even in MW3 (more of this in a second) and frame rate, lag, and controls that just aren't suitable for CQB.

The reason I compared Metro and Bazaar to Modern Warfare 3 is because it has the worst map roster of any game I've played. Dome, Downturn, Bootleg, Carbon, Hardhat, Outpost and Mission are terrible and many more are just about decent. Black Ops had the same problem to a lesser extent but what made it almost worse for me is that the maps I hated (Summit, Nuketown, Firing Range) were everyone else's favourites and got constantly voted instead of the maps I liked. I should probably mention that I play(ed) search and destroy almost exclusively since that affects the gameplay and map dynamics considerably.

If I had to choose one map that beats them all in utter shittiness, I'd say... Operation Metro. Like many have already said, on top of the very narrow and linear structure with a couple of nade spammy chokepoints, it's also ridiculously unbalanced. On top of having shorter way to the B flag, it's way easier for the Russians to push through if the Americans somehow manage to capture B. While the Americans have to advance through one narrow set of escalator or one flight of stairs (the chokepoints mentioned earlier), Russians have the luxury of three doorways that aren't at all as camp and nade spam friendly as the routes Americans have to use. What makes it even worse is that everyone else seems to love this map so it can be difficult to find a server where I don't have to touch this piece of shit.

Edit: I can't believe I wrote peace of shit :D

Goddamn Rainbow Ride! I could not stay alive on that for any meaningful length of time at all. And continuing the Rainbow theme and the falling off, Rainbow Road.

Rainbow Troloload indeed.

Anyone remember that one map from Halo 1 that was a bunch of separate rooms with teleporters? Whoever thought that was a good idea is hopefully unemployed at the moment.
Agree. I've seen a lot of terrible maps, but I'm pretty sure that one reigns supreme in the land of awfulness.

Wasteland in MW2
Salvage in MW2

EDIT:Thanks to other users I remember even more terrible maps from the COD4 and MW2
EDIT 2:I found even more maps I hate from MW2
Wasteland was great in CoD 1-2 under the name "Brecourt", where sniper rifles were balanced by horrible bolt times and machinegun fire out the arse.

'Industrial' from Goldeneye 007. It's so big, and all the rooms and stairways look the same so I tend to get lost. I sometimes run around for 5 solid minutes until finding something to shoot (Provided the game hasn't got the max. amount of players, which it usually doesn't.)

I disagree on your point on Nuketown. It was so small, it was meant to be a joke. The entire map is based on not taking the game seriously, a concept Call of Duty should look into more.

Anyway, I nominate Sword Base from Halo Reach. The map was absurdly biased towards jetpackers, and anybody with Armor Lock and an Energy Sword could camp in the lift room ad infinium with no serious threats whatsoever.
This, I don't know how many times I've screamed "NO DON'T GO UP THE LIFT!!" at my friends while playing that map. The worst part is how damn popular it is. I wouldn't actually consider it the worst map though.

OT:For me that honor would go to the "Blood Gulch" style maps every Halo game has, now granted my complaint is more based on my individual skill than the map design itself but it's just not fun getting splattered/sniped every life. Also the fact that when an enemy team member has a ghost he's unstoppable but when I have one it gets blown up instantly.

Firebase Reactor on ME3 always aggravates my to no end. Hate that map, doesn't help that every time I play that map it's always the Reapers we have to fight.

I don't know if this counts but the Isle of Quel'Danas in World of Warcraft, at least during the release of Burning Crusade a few years ago. On a PvE relam there were no problems at all unless you were coming out of a BG and still flagged for PvP. But on PvP realms, it was chaos, all day, every day.

As for FPS maps, I disliked Complex on GoldenEye 007. When it comes to CoD4:MW, I think I enjoyed playing on all the maps? I loved those maps, probably my favourite multiplayer maps of all time.

Either sword base or campdown. They were both just awful maps that promoted mindless grenade spamming and unskilled CQC weapon whoring.

Although Epitaph from H3 and Burial Mounds from H2 are also in contention

I forgot the name but the map in MW2 that takes place in a South American village and there's a canal going through the middle, be prepared to get sniped at every possible angle from every person on the enemy team the second you come out of hiding.
I believe you are talking about Underpass?
Either that or Rundown

Default Forge as a ranked map in Halo 3. It's good as a base for the Forge mode, but the default set-up is freakin' awful.
Following that is Isolation, which is abysmally designed - the central hill allows you to control the map through both Power Weapons, and you can grenade down at your enemies and kill them with height headshot advantage every time. Also it's ugly as heck.

I really, REALLY hate Nuketown from Black Ops.
Ninja'd by the OP!

Putting 12 players in a map as small as Nuketown is like putting a dozen light bulbs in a small grocery bag and shaking it! Everyone is going to die so many times because no matter where you are, somebody is coming at one of your sides with a shotty, or you might just be fragged by one of the grenades raining from the sky!
The worst part is that Nuketown seems to be the most popular map! EVERYONE votes for it! but you get one of the nice large maps and people vote against it! *RAAAGE*

but since that one is already taken......

The SNES ghost stage in Mario Kart Wii; It's so short that if you're hit by anything you pretty much have NO chance of ever catching up, and when you're high rank in that game, you lose about 10 races worth of points (assuming first place every time) for coming in last due to a blue shell on that map.
People love NukeTown because it's one of the few maps where a player can have fun with little skill. Play on a huge map, and some sniper or dude with an M16 is gonna go 27-2 on you all day because he's better. On NukeTown everyone is dangerous equally. Breaks up the monotony.

2fort in TF2. The one where you cap the intelligence. Could never stand the layout of that map, it's either Snipers owning your face, Spies being in your spawn or Pyros just being dicks in general.

Also the Dominion map in League of Legends. It's just a circle with 5 capture points on the outside! Not good!

Plus only tanky DPS Champions are viable in that mode, AP bursty casters who only have one round of cooldowns before having to dip out of the fight and supports have no place there.

*enemy team picks Darius*

GG

But at least Evelynn is half viable in that mode, Backdoor Evelynn OP.
Dominion isn't that bad. High mobility champs are as important as tanky ones, though AP Bursters do get the shaft. I enjoy Karthus and Miss Fortune on dominion. Beats playing ranked these days. Oh look, an enemy team comp of Graves, Soraka, Morgana, Vorick, and Lee Sin... how original.

OT: I really don't like Gravel Pit in Team Fortress 2. Few ways that map goes fun. Either a steam roll or a lockout, neither a good clean battle.
Morgana? In Ranked? The only reason she'd ever be allowed into Ranked is if someone dropped the ball and didn't permaban her. Same with Kassadin.

Annoying as hell to me since she's one of my favorite AP mids to play.

Yeah the perfectly metagame-happy team comp in Ranked can get annoying. Still I can't play Irelia solotop much in Normal since you hardly ever get a jungler. Rarer still is both teams having a jungler...

Swear only one team having a jungler can go worse for the jungle team cuz the solotop is gonna be 2v1 all the time. If the jungler isn't practically permaganking top it's gonna suck for that guy. Plus if they push the lane one of them can easily go counter-jungling without the top being able to do much

I still hate AD carries mid... Especially Ashe. They absolutely body you until you get your main damage skill up to 3 or 4. Sure if you didn't die you might be able to roflstomp her face at that point but the Volleys are fucking evil!
The only time anyone should jungle in normal is with a fast gank champ (Lee Sin, Shaco, Nocturne) because of this reason. You also need to trust top lane is gonna park themselves under their turret and hide while you take them out. Also means whoever is top lane needs to have at least one hard CC, or you're gonna have trouble. Just not worth it most days.

And I MF mid when I can. Most mages have trouble dealing with that.
If your top lane isn't retarded, being the 1 in a 1v2 is actually an advantage- they're usually trying to share farm, meaning you're outfarming them, and while you basically have to concede that you're going to lose the tower fairly soon, your jungler basically has free reign in their jungle, making his job easier. I love playing Malphite top v 2 because I can just run up, punch a minion, run away, and have my shield regen for the next last hit while they're wasting mana and last hits trying to harass me.

I actually have a hard time playing AD carry mid, because your squishiness means that a burst mage can knock you down pretty quickly if you try to harass. Although MF's early game is really strong, so I suppose that would tend to counter it.

Going back to Dominion from earlier quotes, it's a terrible game mode in terms of competitiveness because the champion balance is designed for summoner's rift, so certain champs (vayne, jax, cough cough) tend to get pretty ridiculous pretty fast if they play competently, but it's certainly fun.

Face3(maybe face2, i can't remember) from Unreal Tournament 2004, Face Classic was the map I had the most fun on in that game, it was basically two big towers, with one massive arched bridge in between them. On the bridge there was nowhere to hide, and nothing but a single health pickup right in the middle, the towers had 3 levels which looked out onto the bridge, each with sniper pickups.Inevitably, all games descended into chaos, but that was what made face classic a brilliant map.
Face3 took the same layout as classic, only the towers were shorter, and the 'bridge' in the middle was a massive network of paths with trees and other random stuff in between, so all of what made classic fun, had been removed.

I vote for this simply because it was a map that was trying to pick up on the popularity of a previou map, but just failed so, so horribly because it changed too much.

I see your point there, but I usually do quite well on the American side of Operation Metro due to my commanding playstyle. When I get to do game-changing decisions based on how the other team is playing, and serving commands through the chat that people actually follow, then I am truly happy in my pants. Though when I (very often) am placed in a team full of people with team play as the last priority, and the objective being a foreign word for them, I really start raging at the game. If one tries to play by the objective of Metro, it's kind of cool thinking of the whole invasion-esque appeal that you get from playing as Americans, due to the Russians having "control" over Paris at the time. It feels sort of realistic in some sort of way.

The reason why I hate Caspian Border as of just now, is because I usually end up on teams that are not to keen on teamwork, and usually just run around, being targeted by snipers, tanks, helicopters and jets, therefore reducing the number of Ticks we've got by a billion/minute. It's frustrating on every map, but this map just seems to take the cake, as I usually play with a Cobra RDS, Foregrip, TacLight AEK-971 on almost all the maps[footnote]It's a really good and versatile combination.[/footnote], but on this map I am forced to switch to longer distance-sets like the SV98, and since I don't have the Straight Pull Bolt (I suck with two-shot snipers, as I usually just hit on the first shot), and therefore just end up being brutally raped by anything.
Also, people who are really good with helicopters seem to be ending up on the enemy team EVERY DAMN TIME, while we have idiots that crash.

Funfact: This one time [SUB]At band camp[/SUB], a player on our team left his tank in the middle of enemy territory. And not just once, no, he did it TWICE. And no one on my team were able to use AT-setups, so the enemy had TWO more tanks than they started with. Now just imagine the horrible and brutal capture point-rape they ended up dealing out as candy in a kindergarden. I almost punched my monitor in rage due to that guy's stupidity. And he wasn't even doing it on purpose to help the other team. He did it because he thought he could kill more people with a sniper in close combat than with a big-ass massive fucking M1 Abrams!

Doublecross in TF2.
Besides being a lag fest of a map, the intel room was far too easy to lock down with not enough routes to flank them with.
