Worth buying Oblivion?

Heh, I liked the ZP.

Now I'm confused. But if it's so divisive it's probably worth the small price and time investment it'll cost me! And now I've been told Morrowind is better by a fair few people I may grab that too...

EDIT: I also kinda like mods (My copy of Torchlight is now an unrecognisable mess, until I can get round to working which mod combination removed all the textures it will remain so ;P). So there's that :D. All the feedback has actually been very helpful, thanks everyone :D.

I was a huge fan of Morrowind and Oblivion is better than that game in a lot of ways, but also worse in a lot of ways.

The combat is really good but they completely nerfed the magic. In Morrowind, you could cast spells that let you levitate and spells that allow you to jump half way across the entire map in one jump, but all of this is replaced by a fast travel system in Oblivion.

Also, in Oblivion all of the characters have spoken dialogue but, for the hundreds of characters, there are only like ten voice actors. The faction quests are also very shallow and kinda boring and you can complete any faction quests no matter what class you are (I.E. complete the Mages Guild as a Warrior just as easily as if you where a Mage) so it makes what class you chose to be kind of irrelevant.

I know it kinda sounds like I'm bashing the game but it's really not bad. It is just much shallower then previous Elder Scrolls games so if you are a fan, then you will probably be disappointed.

If you are not already a fan of TES, then it is still a fun game with a lot of stuff to do and places to explore, as well as a fairly good (although a bit boring) combat system.

Just buy it.

The game met huge acclaim from critics and gamers; there are those that feel that heresy has been committed should one prefer Oblivion to Morrowind, which is why they'll tell you it's awful and to not go anywhere near it. But, well, that's what people like that are like.

Make sure you get one of the mods to fix the draw distance though, because it really is awful.

It's not bad but it isn't as good as Morrowind and isn't anything like Baldur's Gate. The shivering isle expansion is more entertaining than the main game so if you get it then look out for that.

In my opinion, it was an excellent game for it's time. However times have moved on and it's performance compared to other games are shoddy. I would recomend Fallout 3 if you havn't already got it.

But if it's cheap, it may be worth checking it out. I know several people who still enjoy it, it might be a game you enjoy too.

Having never played Morrowind, I found Oblivion to be a very enjoyable game. The sort of game that a LOT of hours could be lost to. There is plenty to do and the game world is huge, especially if you get the GOTY edition which includes two expansions also both quite lengthy.

Yeah so the leveling system sucks and the characters are pretty much the same 5 people copy pasted with only two variations within each species (Male and Female!) But hey, you kinda get past that and just enjoy the game. I really enjoyed simply being in the world, I didn't find it felt empty at all. Quite the opposite, there are beasts to fight everywhere! Towns are well populated and there are so many side quests that you don't even need to touch the main story outside the training level to waste long hours.

In short, get it. It's a great game and will provide plenty of hours entertainment, whatever your view of it afterwards.

Your making a big mistake. It's not merely bad, it goes beyond bad.

I like it. BUT you need to cram it full of mods, just like Fallout 3. Take the autoleveling out. Improve crafting and magic. More animals, foes. more livlier world. All possible. There are some really ESSENTIAL things missing/weird.

But after that: AWESOME game. Morrowind too, of course. Better magic system & stuff.

Yes! Buy the game! But yes the vanilla version is, not as good as it should be.

So linky!

Here are many many good mods for all sorts of problems. Like the monster leveling and the hilarious bugs.

You will get hours of fun with Oblivion, in the expansion pack 1 you will have more hours of fun, in the last expansion pack you will have even more hours of fun! So hours of fun+more hours of fun+even more hours of fun=An epic game. You won't get the freedom to choose as much as in the bioware games, and the dialogs aren't intresting at all. But you will have a decent amount of fun with the game.

I really enjoyed Oblivion, but I never played Morrowind to compare the two. Then again, from the sound of it, neither have you, so buy Oblivion and enjoy it/hate it, but judge for yourself. It doesn't need to be a carefully considered purchase - games can surprise you, regardless of reviews or popularity. Besides, Oblivion is older than most of the mothers on my street so you'll pick it up for next to nothing.

Oblivion is the greatest game of this console generation.

Morrowind is amazinger, but it is less welcoming to new players than Oblivion is. So try Oblivion first.

Its more worthwhile with mods, but unlike the idiots above me are saying, you should play it on the vanilla version first. If you don;t know anything about the game, you're bound to fuck yourself over with mods that you don't know how to work.

Stay away from it. In their efforts to create a living world, Bethesda in fact created one that seems so very lifeless and artificial. The voice acting is mostly pretty bad, and the story is nothing to fuss over.
Lols. Quite a consensus then!

...must have game...fill free time. I'll give Morrowind a look, going off some of these recommendations then. Ta.

EDIT: Woah! The fightback begins. Maybe it is worth a look. Nice to have two sides of the story and not a single flame on either side so far.

Don't buy it unless you want to seriously unimpressed for a long while. I almost couldn't get into the thing because the combat and running animations make you look like a dipshit.

oblivion was my first 360 game back in 04 and besides a few 3 month breaks from it I always have at least one character with a good 15 hours + sunk into it. This is 6 years of solid play, maybe 5 if you count all the time I dragged myself out of it.

An Oblivion gate will open outside your house, spewing out demons into your world. Unless you buy this game. :)
I have 450 hours clocked on this game. That's the most amount of time I have played any game ever!

Yes it is definitely worth getting but get it from the PC and you can change nearly anything about the game. Nearly everything every singly person has moaned about can be fixed with the mods. You might still get the odd crash but things like Psychic Guards can be fixed. I also have an Exp based leveling system in my game. You are actually the main character in the story as without you the world would have been fucked over. The worlds may look a bit boring but then there are the Unique Landscapes and Natural Environment mods. The dungeons look no worse than Morrowind's. The initial leveling system is a bit unintuitive and I do recommend you get something that changes that.

Of course as Pimppetter already said play around with Vanilla and make back ups of your Data Folder and Saved games and the actual mods themselves before you mess with that shit.
