Worth buying Oblivion?

Christ, based on some of these posts you people are acting like Oblivion killed your fathers (AND raped your mothers)

OT: It's a good game, maybe a great game. The visuals have held up VERY well, the elder scrolls series still has the best leveling system out of any game there is, the combat in oblivion is a huge step up from that in Morrowind, it still has a very deep amount of character customization... Just buy it. The GOTY edition, if you have the choice, and on PC, if you have the choice.

Some of the mods are great for fixing the bugs, and some can let you remove the enemies leveling with you that apparently the entire internet, except me, hated.

Oh, and I'm not joking when I say the Dark Brotherhood sidequest storyline is one of the best "side-missions" in ANY game I have ever played.

Oblivion is a great game. I found the scenery and music both to my liking, the enemies leveling with the player actually makes the game more balanced and ensures that it's never too hard or too easy (unless you screw with the difficulty bar). Some people would say that it's an awful game, and I won't debate their right to their opinions. The game is worth your money. And if you get bored with Oblivion, Morrowind is still pretty cheap as well.

Go for it! I've had Oblivion for years and recently started playing it again. Strangely I've started almost a dozen different playthroughs but never actually got round to finishing the main quest, although that was because of being sidetracked and wanting to change my character. The game world is awfully immersive and its scale is impressive, especially when the game's age is taken into consideration.
One thing in particular that I like about Oblivion is that your character never has to specialise into one range of skills, you can pick whatever assortment of skills you want. Another feature I appreciate is that with side quests there is not always only one way of achieving your goal. Even then you'll face decisions and can manipulate situations so that they most benefit you. It's easy to double cross people if you so choose. Just sold a valuable artifact to an avid collector? You could always steal it back and display it on your mantle or even sell it again for further profit.
Outside of quests you can still make decisions that you normally wouldn't in most RPGs. For example, in my current playthrough there have been a couple of characters who struck me as downright rude and unnecessarily hostile. So what did I do? I waited until the night, broke into their residences and assassinated them, leaving me free to take whatever of their possessions I wanted. You couldn't do that to a civilian NPC in a Bioware RPG.
The 'leveling problem' in Oblivion can be solved by simply lowering the game's difficulty setting as you level up. Doing that should effectively negate the problem and make leveling up feel more worthwhile as enemies become weaker.
Oblivion is an RPG where you can experience true freedom to go anywhere in the world that you want and do anything you want when you get there. Though on the other hand it's clear to see my bias in favour of the game so it's still a good idea to consider the opinions of our fellow Escapists. Of course I'd recommend the Game of the Year Edition and honestly the PC version is the way to go thanks to the many patches and mods available, as much as it pains me as an Xbox 360 gamer to admit that. Have fun.

No.

Oblivion is probably the poorest RPG in existence. It is barely even an RPG or an action game.

The voice acting is the worst from any game ever BTW.

Oblivion on the PC is the way to go: Just look at all the stuff you can get. [http://www.tesnexus.com/]
Make sure you get the game of the year edition because the Shivering Isles expansion is better than the regular game.

I had fun, and spent many hours wasting away on it, so I would have to say yes.
As long as you get the expansion pack with it, with the ever lovable prince of madness.
Its fallout 3 (made by the same guys, and I believe the same engine), but fantasy, bigger, and more control over your stats.
Voice acting is utter shit though. Even Patric Stewert was awful.

So, if that appeals to you, and you don't mind crappy voice acting, give it a go.

From any game, ever?

I see you've never played Resident Evil, my friend. Which was a fantastic game despite it, funny that. (EDIT: and Deus Ex was pretty horrible too, see a pattern?)

The OP asked whether Oblivion was worth buying, not how it fits into categories. I can't see how you can say that it is barely an RPG and/or the poorest RPG in existence. Pick up Lagoon for the SNES, then we'll talk.

No it is an overrated pile of shit that you will hate within the first 5 minutes. DO yourself a favor, if you are interested in Oblivion buy Fallout 3. It is the same game except good.

Ignore the haters. Pretty much everyone else on the internet likes it and yes while it has aged, so has Morrowind... more so in fact. But Morrowind is also good. Oblivion is cheap now anyway so give it a look regardless of what others say.

General gaming website experience has taught me: ask how good a popular game is and all the comments will be hate.

to me, the atrocious voice acting, buggy AI and and hilariously awful dialoque all contribute to the games charm. OFC nearly all of this can be fixed if you dont like it with the beautiful fallout 3 nexus. its good campy fun thats definatly not for everyone but if you are looking for something that is deep and has an engaging world then by all means pick this up.
i still find the awful dialogue to be a point in its favour :p

I FOUGHT MUDCRABS MORE FEARSOME THAN YOU!

"I saw a mudcrab the other day".

And look at this for the love of crap...

When you hear someone in Resident Evil say "Hang on let me do that one again" come back and we'll talk.

I say it is barely an RPG because nothing you do in the game effects anything. You can become arena champion at level 2, you can pick locks with a security skill of 5, you never have to make a meaningful choice about putting points into strength or putting points into agility. And the action part of it is pretty poor also. Overall, terrible game not worth getting.

The OP already decided so I wouldn't bother keeping up the hate, which in the end is an opinion after all.

I've heard bad things about the game, but mostly it focussed on how enemies levelled up with you. Now, that kind of appeals to me. Are there any other drawbacks to the game that make it not worth the purchase? Should I have gotten it a long time ago? Would I get seriously addicted? (This is a genuine concern - I once spent a week off work desperately attempting to 100% complete BG2, although I got away with it and it was only menial temp work).

In other words, if you feel like it, talk about Oblivion to me. Please? :)
Look man, you're going to get two types of responses here:
You're going to get the people who played Morrowind (The previous Elder Scrolls game), and you are going to get the people who haven't.

Oblivion, compared to Morrowind, falls flat. It is NOWHERE as good as it's predecessor.
But judged on it's own merit, Oblivion is an absolutely amazing game, and considering it's probably about 15$ right now, it would frankly be stupid to pass it up.
If you can look past it's flaws, you will get HUNDREDS of hours out of the game.

And in case you don't believe me:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/elderscrolls4oblivion

I honestly have NO IDEA why this thread brought up so many people saying "No, it sucks", because the general internet consensus is that the game is excellent.
I'm not trying to bullshit you, I'm just trying to let you know what to believe.

If you mod the heck out of it maybe... just maybe.

Unmodded: Dull story, uninteresting villain, samey scenery, bugs (oh gods, the bugs...), horrendous voice acting, monsters that level to be better than you which paradoxically makes you more powerful the lower level you are, the fast-travel kills any sense of 'size' and makes the horses kind of pointless, oh, I could go on and on...

Modded: You can fix most of the above, except the bugs. Kinda. YMMV.

Final Thought: There's far better sandbox games out there. Try Oblivion last.

Not really a "sandbox" game...
