Would you purposely name your child with something exotic or from a video game etc?

There's names from books that I really like; Alyss for a girl (Rangers Apprentice) and Kylar for a boy (The Night Angel Trilogy). The only video game name I would consider was the IGN of a friend, Layis.

I don't think it would be a good idea for me to have children, because my goal would to be to give them the most outlandishly strange name that I have to power to give it.

Or I would give her the name of some random RPG protagonist. "Yes, this is my son, Vault. Vault! Vault Dweller! Get down here!"

Not very likely.

Besides a lot of you guys seem to be forgetting that if you're going to give your offspring a ridiculous name you're first going to need a partner to spawn some. And (s)he has to agree with the name too.

Took much effort to get the wife to be down for the cause but I won out in the end.

My own daughters are named: Aria and Zelda.

My son is named: Char (pronounced Shar BTW)

Though are pets have much more common and less cool names.

I wouldn't name my child(ren) the name of any video game character unless it happened to be a coincidence. If I had a son I would either be a complete bastard and name them after myself or name them after someone great in the past, such as a general or philosopher; so long as the name wasn't weird enough to cause mockery.

Off Topic: I once heard of a girl named La-sha. It is suppose to be pronounced Ladasha. The mother who named her apparently gets upset when teachers and others fail to spell her name as intended, which is La-sha. I'll be laughing when I hear the story of a foreigner pronouncing the dash as it is called in their language. La-halbgeviertstrich-a?. Correct me if I'm wrong with that name, I just Googled the German name real quick.
Do you by chance live near Flint? I know a girl with the same name and it doesn't sound like that common of a name.

On Topic: I would name them after a character as long as it isn't ridiculous. My parents were debating naming me after a car (Shelby) or a character on Star Trek (Rayna). I wish I was called Rayna, that's a way cooler name.
Nope, this was in Florida. I do not know of any place named Flint in Florida, but if there is I should say that I only heard of this story from a relative who lives very close to me. So she may have been there.

No. It would be a ****'s trick [http://www.urbandictionary.com/products.php?term=cunts%20trick&defid=1993115]. Punch in the face for a first offence. Tubes tied for the second.

Nah I meant Flint Michigan, if you didn't know then I figured it was a different girl (though if you lived in a Flint city in another state that would have just been weird). I can't believe two people would name their kid that. That's right up there with naming a kid Syphilis because you say it on the birth certificate and it sounded pretty.

I really like the idea of calling my son if I have one Altair and possibly calling my daughter Chell. I'd never call them some exotic name that just didn't sound right, it seems stupid to me. You're naming a person not a pet.

Call me old fashioned, but I like to keep my hobbies seperate from naming my offspring.
This.

Plus the fact the level of piss take from school kids is already high without naming your kid, Cloud, Zangief, Kerrigan or even Link.

Seriously people naming there kids after film characters is also bad >_> imho.

While it's beyond stupid for people to name their kids with something that doesn't even sound like a name, but if you got the final choice, would you name your kid after a character that has a normal sounding name?

I'd name a son Dante, Virgil, Judas, or Junus.
My sister named my nephew 'Ziggy' (a Bowie fan).

She then decided on using our fathers middle name because it made his initials Z.A.G.

So he is known as 'Zig Zag'...

My wife and I actually talked about naming our daughter Claes after one of the girls from the anime Gunslinger Girl. Does that count? I even researched the name. I think it means strength in Greek or something. We later decided to do something more traditional after a 100% blank stare ratio when talking about it.
Not sure where you're from, but Claes(or Clas/Klas/Klaes) is a fairly common name in northern Europe. The name is a Germanification(new word? :D) from Nikolaus and isn't a female name.
It does originate in Greece though(Nikelaos), meaning victory or people.

I love you, Wikipedia.

OT: No, I wouldn't. I'm considering to give my possible offspring old Swedish names though.

No, no I don't think so, unless they were already 'normal' and the inspiration just happened to come from a game. However, I did hear about a guy who convinced his aunt to name her newborn twin daughters Celestia and Luna, which actually are quite nice names, when you think about it.

I'd definitely love to call a daughter Zelda. Though depending on her disposition, the mother may prefer it to only be a middle name, given my motivation for choosing it.

Absolutely not. Granted, the likelyhood of me ever having kids is miniscule, but even so, I think any kids I have would have enough absentee father issues without also suffering the indignity of having a name that would get them ridiculed their entire life.

Anyone who calls their kid Katniss, for example, deserves to have that child taken away from them, because that would be far more damaging to the kid than being beaten up by daddy every other day.
