You too? The Girl Who Leapt Through Time has to be one of the best movies I've ever seen- it simply blew me away, and instantly because one of my all-time favourites. Another real kicker is 5 Centimeters Per Second. It's only an hour long movie, but trust me it will be one of the saddest movies you will have seen in a very, very long time.

Then there's FLCL. My mind was reeling for days/weeks from the amount of awesome, which I hadn't anticipated could come from an anime.

A couple nights ago, I stumbled across a movie called The Masters of Time (that's the translation from French, the language the movie was originally made in). It's an animated sci-fi movie from the early 80's.

See, I had just picked up the newest album from The Sword, a sci-fi concept album called Warp Riders (awesome album btw, if you're into metal). I was reading online that one of the inspirations for it was the animator Rene Laloux, who directed some great weird sci-fi stuff (probably most famously Fantastic Planet [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantastic_Planet], and The Masters of Time). You can watch it in 8 parts on youtube - I'll even convienently link the first part:

Such a great, weird, touching movie. I was awestruck by it.

Rocky Horror Picture Show.

My mind was blown after seeing it with some veteran's, the movie itself was crazy but they just took the cake. They shouted along with the movie and brought their own glove's, toast, and confetti, It was bizzarely awesome, and a great way to spend the night

Good evening/morning/afternoon Escapists. I created this thread to do a simple task. To pose a question. But let me start with some context.

So, it's about midnight, and with all my other friends gone to bed, which means I'm either going to go to bed myself - and wait the set 4 hours before I actually feel tiered and am able to go to sleep - or watch a movie. And heck. Movie it was! But having had a solid look through my DvD collection and skimmed the TV channels(curse you freeview!) I was left with no movie to watch. Crap. So, being new into this anime-malarky, I decided I'd ask a veteran of said animes to recommend me a film. Having only seen Laputa castle in the Sky and Spirited Away, I didn't really have much of a history. He recommended a movie called "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time". So, I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it looked okay. So, I googled the movie and found a place to watch it (Yes, I am a bad person, but this was a one off!) and off I went.

Wow. Simply. Wow.

This is probobly one of my new favorite films. It absolutely blew me away. I came expecting nothing, and after watching it I had chills over how good a movie it was. It was... well, amazing.

So, that brings me to the question I was going to ask. Simply, have you ever been so utterly blown away by something that it is hard to express via words?

Also. Go watch said movie. I ordered it straight after I watched it. Worth it.

ALSO ALSO. Damn, wall of text. Sorry guys.

EDIT: Doesn't have to anime, by the way!
I read your post, and decided to watch that movie. Just back from watching it, and wow. That was a pretty good movie. I'd definatley say it's one of my favourites now =]

Last month my friends have shown me The Dark Knight, which I was reluctant to watch before. And, surprise, it was one of the best movies I've ever seen and even though I found the main character a complete moron, I walked home shocked at how good that movie was.

Oh, and without playing the games, I listened to the SH2 soundtrack.
It's amazing.

I must make a note of those two films.

Wow, I see what you mean. Thank you for that.
OT: A book called The Knife of Never Letting Go, which I am now shamelessly promoting for the third time since I joined. Absolutely awesome.
Also, when I finished Ender's Game. Completely blew me away.

My god, it WAS! I cried at a few parts. It was so sad, and yet, it's made me really think what would happen if I could do what the main character did. You never know what kind of chances you could create or make doing what she did... very very good movie. I'm going to check out the other ones by the same director. I didn't think it would be that good. :3
I've created a watching circle! Yay me! It's as close as a movie has gotten me to tears in a looooong time. And I'm a manly man.

Scott Pilgrim. That movie just was packed with so much awesome sauce that the condiment level was off the fucking scale.

Most recently, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

I fucking loved that movie to death.

I was pissed that the sequel was only released in New York City the day I left...
Agreed.

..Damnit! I don't get the sequel in Canadian theaters yet. I must not irrationally hate you until that situation changes, even if you weren't there yourself to see it! (Hence "irrational")

I know it doesn't have to be an anime but my best two examples happen to be so:

Perfect Blue, Satoshi Kon's masterpiece from the late 90's, left me utterly speechless after the first viewing. After about 20 seconds of stunned silence, I only mamaged to squeak out the word "Intense." It took almost a minute, repeating that word 4 times, before I recovered fully. I expected little when I purchased it, knowing nothing about it other than the guy who made it later directed Paprika, another favourite of mine. This movie blew away my meager expectations and left me a changed man. That's not hyperbole, I am a different person than I was before I saw this movie.

The other example is the anime Elfen Lied. Unlike Perfect Blue, Elfen Lied had expectations as my ex-flatmate built this show up to be among the greatest television shows in history. However, because he was a stoner and a schizo, I took this advice with a heaping handful of salt. Boy, was he on the button. After dedicating a full afternoon for this show, I immediately declared his to have the best story I have ever experienced with a final few moments that got me closer to crying than any other anything has since I was 10. Yet I have an impossible time describing the show; it is tons better than any description you read because it relies on situational emotion, which is notoriously hard for me to describe in words. What a show!

Other (non-anime) examples include:
Weirdsville, The Lost World (1925), The Shawshank Redemption, The Cove, and Pulp Fiction.

The first time I watched Godzilla vs Destroyah, I remember going to vidoe stores, searching for Godzilla films, loved them, and when I got this, and watching that epic battle unfold, It still brings me goose bumps to this day.

As for an older me not looking partially through nostalgia glasses, Trigun, because It taught me anime can be awesome, and Is not all Narutos and Inuyashas. ( no offense to those who enjoy said shows, just not my taste ) Trigun won me over, I told myself I would try two animes, the first was Evangelion, I enjoyed It, but I wasn't really appreciating anime until Trigun. Its characters, it's setting, it's themes, It won me over on an entire genre.

Finally a game, Okami, It was the coming of age story for my gaming, It taught me popular games weren't always gold, and that games can be art, and that the protagonist doesn't have to be stock, Amaterasu is a dog, but also a girl. I had broken both the gender and species barrier, yet I still felt a connection, even though she was a also a god. The story In general was great, every character, the bosses that struck fear and respect into my heart, the innovative gameplay, and the ending that only leaves you wanting more.

Yes I have been blown away by something. It was Toy Story 3. It made me cry. Not tears of sadness, but tears of happiness.

The only thing that ever made me cry tears of happiness.
Oh, that film and Up. By god Pixar, how do you make something so life affirming and make me cry through it? Genius!

Well, the Girl Who Leapt Through Time and 5 Centimeters Per Second are movies, but FLCL isn't- it's actually a 6-episode miniseries. Still epic though.

Meh, I've watched that movie before. It was good, I liked it, but it wasn't anything mindblowing at all.

OT: Ink. Seriously. That movie just blew me away.

Anime-wise: the ending of the Berserk anime. Ho-lee crap. I just kinda stared at the TV in shock when I was done. In a good way. Trying to explain to my friends why I now had to read the manga, and what I found so amazing about the end, was near impossible.

Movie-wise: Pan's Labyrinth. Just... wow. I loved that movie.
