I used to play WoW before I had any consoles or access to decent computer games. I didn't realize how little fun I was having for 18 months, simply because I didn't know better. After that, I highly dislike the game, but I don't go around bashing it (well, except here, I guess).
It's really a shame; the trailers make the story seem very interesting, and there are some very interesting environments, but there just isn't enough variety in the gameplay to keep me interested.

Firstly, I play WoW, but I'm not a take-a-bullet-for-the-alliance kind of player. I play casually with a group of friends, and I find it fun and refreshing.jawakiller said:

MMO have far, far greater content than FPS. Just look at the sheer size of the world in which WoW is set, and it will prove my point. A standard FPS would have between 10-20 maps, then more with DLC. Even with several DLC map packs, you still don't have anywhere near the same size of a game as you would with an MMO. My view is, FPS do not have more gameplay at all; since you are limited to the maps and weapons you find; and there is little variety in gameplay modes. Contrastively, the number of quests in World of Warcraft are staggering and thats without even taking into account end-game raids/pvp.
I agree that MMO's have a lot of repetition; but you can't argue an FPS online does not. Where you might say WoW has you
- Talk to an NPC
- Get Quest
- Kill #x of ____
- Return Quest
And FPS basically has
- Choose Gametype
- Spawn
- Kill enemy
- Be Killed
- Spawn etc.
Both genres are repetitive, however an MMO like World of Warcraft has far more content than any FPS, and you stated that gameplay=fun. With your own logic: World of Warcraft should be one of your favourite games.
But WoW requires little to no skill. Maybe some occasional thought process and a few strategic moves but thats it. An FPS is based on reflex and accuracy. The veteran players even use tactics. WoW just lacks this key element. All it needs is time. Lots and lots of time.Bradd94 said:

Teamwork in the open world was rare enough before, but back then people actually helped one another when they were working together. During the trial, teamwork consisted of sharing buffs but otherwise each person doing their own thing with maybe a little interference if the other seemed to struggle. Which was rarely the case.
Yeah... I don't really care for WoW and how it has set a kind of expected standard for other games, but not to the point that I would spend so much time berating people who do play. I can't even say what it was that kept me playing so long other than wanting to avoid feeling the loss of a family member coupled with the immaturity to tell myself to stop.

I agree WoW requires time above anything else; because the game only really starts at end-game.
To say it requires little skill is a bit harsh, perhaps? Certainly you can dungeon grind/raid with little skill, but pvp is in essence the same as an fps. Player vs Player. You've to learn the battlegrounds, learn your favourite rotations; all similar to an FPS.
But you also need to learn how to adapt to new situations. Where FPS rely solely upon shooting somebody before you get shot; which yes, is a certain degree of skill; WoW PvP requires you to know how your class combats other classes. You wouldn't use the same skill set attacking a priest as you would, say, a warrior.
And on that note, the more aged PvP players use tactics and skill every bit as much as FPS veterans do.
I actually don't hate WoW, that is I don't hate Azeroth, Outland Icecrown, and Cata. In fact as a result of playing the Warcraft series and getting a good number of the Loremaster achieves in WoW, I like to think I am pretty familiar with the Mythos, and that more than anything is what kept me playing. I actually read the quest text and I do everything I can for myself to make the experience immersible.
However that all dies for me when a person kills my harmless tauren as he picks fucking flowers, and then hugs my dead body while saying "L o L, T r y H a r d F a g g o t ."

And here is where your argument falls to pieces. Its funny, because I stopped playing CoD and Halo because I was too good at those games. I continue to play WoW because there is so much I can improve upon. WoW takes tons of skill to play. Shooters don't take so much. I dislike the combat system, the near complete lack of a physics engine (those trolls are throwing axes. I should be able to take cover behind a gorram boulder!), and the grind-tastic nature of the game... so it's not my cup of tea... but I don't hate it per se.
What I do hate about it are the social elements and the type of gamer those social elements appeal to. So... I hate the players, not the game.

So you're agreeing the fight animations are bad. I could play a game with that but the fact that the game is so damn monotonous really ruins it. If WoW had more interesting missions and quests I might start playing it again but the "kill x amount of units or go from point A to point B" is really boring. I've tried to play WOW before, and I've really tried to enjoy it but it just doesn't do it for me. Some of my problems have to do with all MMOs and some are just specific to WOW (or games that are pretty much clones of WOW)
One of the problems that I have with MMOs in general is probably one the reason why I (and I'm sure a lot of other people) play games in general. When I play a game I find it much more fun if your character is special or unique. Pretty much every single player game (barring most war games) is like this. In MMOs it is difficult to tell yourself apart from any one of the other 1000 or so characters who are probably just like you. I`m sure that once you reach level 80 or similarly higher levels you begin to become somewhat more unique but that brings in my next issue with the game.
You need to devote a huge amount of time to WOW before it actually becomes enjoyable. Last time I tried to play it and only ended up getting to level 15. I realized that I couldn't find anything I enjoyed about the game and decided to quit. Spending 15 levels doing mundane tasks got repetitive and boring. It would be alright if it was just one of the two, ie: repetitive or boring. I can stand to do an exciting task over and over again but I don't find the enjoyment in collecting x amount of y to give to z, and even less so when that's pretty much all I do. Another problem I had was that the entire goal of the game was to get to the next level. I don't have any issue with a level based system but I want to look forward to more in a game than getting to the next level.
And the last problem is not an issue with the game, more so with myself. Regardless which MMO game I play I just feel no inspiration to interact with other players because I am unusually anti-social. So why even bother playing with a million other people if I'm just soloing mission after mission anyways?
