I dont think anyone else brought this up.

The single biggest problem with WoW is the constant theft and regurgitation of ideas. Nothing in the WoW story line is even close to original or even ashamed at ripping off other cultural references. The games system is a blatant rip off of what came before it.

However what generates the most vocal hate is the people. Using the prior example, its funny how WoW fans in the face of having WoW being called a complete ripoff of Everquest, AC or DAoC, Wow fans will say, yes WoW took all these ideas and REFINED them. No, its outright gratuitous theft. Hell WoWs UI is indistinguishable from EQ2. Which when people complain about WoW clones the single most common element being referred to as cloned is the UI that was stolen from EQ2.

The content is regurgitated, The technology is regurgitated, Hell, even the new expansions "hook" is a reused and regurgitated idea stolen from Ultima Online. Yet it makes me sick to hear people talk about "The only thing thats going to kill WoW is another Blizzard made MMO"

Or how "12 billion people cant be wrong" knowing full well that Blizzard fudges their population numbers to make themselves seem vastly larger than what they actually are. (and yes I am fully aware its supposedly 12 million, not billion)

People generate the hate. From the WoW fan who wont shut up about wow, To the WoW fan who behaves like WoW in any way shape or form brought anything new to the MMO scene outside of having such obscenely low system spec requirements to allow for more access to more PCs. Or the WoW fan who behaves like WoW is this insanely fun exp and that in the presence of wow Nothing else exists.

Honestly, I really do not think this is an applicable case for "people hate because its popular" because WoW has generated this sort of hate long before they were ever popular, and honestly there are entirely too many legit reasons to dislike the game to blindly assume people are dismissing the game out of hand. I would say about 80% of the hate WoW generates is very much earned and deserved.

The repetition argument is actually pretty terrible, because nothing sounds fun when you boil it down to components.

MMOs? Boring. All you do is kill things and do fetch quests over and over.
Shooters? Boring. All you do is kill people on the same maps over and over.
Grand Theft Auto? Boring. All you do is shoot civilians steal cars over and over.
RTS games? Boring. All you do is mine resources and send your units to die over and over.
Minecraft? Boring. All you do is make a shelter and dig for ore over and over.
Platformers? Boring. All you do is jump around over and over.

I don't hate WOW. The only reason I haven't tried it myself is because I don't have time for that kind of....addiction....

I love Blizzard. I started with the RTS, though; I loved the lore. I don't play WoW anymore, but I still respect the hell out of it.

My favorite is when people say, "No one plays World of Warcraft," then I spout statistics and numbers at their face. Then they ignore them 'cause... well, I'm not too sure why...

This,
my brother tried to get me to play it twice, both times i ended up hunting deer/boar for like, an hour, that was it for me. Went back to playing Counter-Strike and IMMEDIATELY started having fun, didn't have to wait for it or anything

My question for WoW players amounts down to just this. IGNORING all the numbers you might increase over your playsession, and ignoring the potential of "getting to a part that will be really fun", such as being 10 levels higher or having the ultimate armor set, I want you to answer the question:

Is the activity you are performing RIGHT NOW engaging and entertaining? Is it fun? Are you playing it for the sake of "progress", or are you playing it because it's firing off the activity centers in your mind and the gameplay itself is addicting you?

Besides which, even when there's progress I tend to notice the game isn't immediately "fun" just because I obtained the level 20 mace I wanted.

I've played WoW and I thought it was pretty good, I've never felt the all-encompassing awe that seems to bring on an addiction but I can see why people play...

but I still hate it. I hate it on principle, as the OP said.

I hate that as a massively-successful game it sets the standard and then a bunch of idiots think that the key to their success (or at least fat wads of cash) is making a clone with no thought or effort. I understand why they do it, but it's still wasting peoples' time and I want games to progress to greater heights, not move along at a snail's pace, pixel by pixel.

Aside with the whole "WoW is boring and based on little more than higher numbers" thing, and the fact that it is pure evil, both of which have surely been mentioned before...I actually don't hate WoW for itself. Sure, it's not for me, but for what it's trying to be, it does extremely well. And I'll admit it's moderately entertaining. (For about two days, here, but hey.)

What I dislike WoW for is what is created.

Look around you at pretty much eighty percent of MMORPG's out there. What do you see. Things that look like WoW? Probably so, unless you're looking at nothing but really good MMO's. The massive success of WoW has caused developers to create a legion of games very similar WoW, in order to capitalize on the success. (Honestly, it's rather pointless, because if someone's going to want to play a game like WoW, they'll play WoW, but anyway.)

Perhaps that's not what most people dislike it for, but that's why I do. It sort of sucked a lot of creativity out of the genre, since executive meddling tends to lead to all newcomers to the genre suddenly morphing into it.

You wanna know why EVERYONE hates WoW? Because of what it is, crack for gamers. In a tv show or movie the fat loser that's living win his mom is a byproduct of our stereotype thanks to WoW. It lures people in, but never let's them go. It is not only crack, but an addiction. You think this is bad? There's cases of actual addiction and withdrawal caused by the scifi counterpart of nearly the same name in S. Korea. If you buy the game new and spend $15 a month on it, it'll run you $214.99 in the first year. It's with that first payment that you take your first hit, once you make that first payment, your a slave that is Blizzard. WoW( I'm gonna capitalize this next bit so you get me good and clear) IS DESIGNED TO GET PEOPLE ADDICTED TO THE GAME SO PLAYERS WILL ALWAYS SPEND MONEY ON IT, IT DESIGNED TO GENERATE PROFIT NOT FUN! Other MMO studios are out there trying new and fresh things, but people are so addicted to WoW crack that they dare not try something else. I play Guild Wars, no sub fee so I play strictly for leisure not because I spent my money and I must make the most of it. Guild Wars runs on the one time payment for the game itself and than micro transactions for things like costumes, new campaign, or skills. No fee for playing, nothing is stopping me from deleting Guild Wars other than I like it. You wanna see what a REAL MMO looks like and deserves some freaking credit for doing something totally original and groundbreaking? I.e. A game that breaks away from the WoW formula of repeating the same task 10,000 times ten fold, dependence on healers, destruction of the labels of tank or nuked or dos and the rest, a game where damage is determined by your location and trajectory of the enemies attack rather than a roll of the dice, a game where a simple rock used for decorations out in the middle of the game world can be used as a lethal projectile, a game where each type of class can heal itself and there are no more set healer class, a game where even if you lose all your health you still have a chance to stall your enemy from delivering the final blow so your mate can revive you?

Look up Guild Wars 2, now that[i/] is an MMO! When studios think of which MMO as a muse to structure theirs around, they're gonna look at Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars 2 is what WoW could have become, but never did. While WoW sticks to the business model of offering itself to you to create an addiction that only Armageddon will cease, Guild Wars 2 will be free and the only thing that will keep you is it's originality, beauty, fresh take on the MMO genre, and how much it's not WoW.

I don't really understand some of your critiques. Leveling becoming more difficult as the game progresses sounds like a good concept. If leveling became easier or remained at the same difficulty then why bother to include the mechanic if there is no sense of accomplishment for it. As for "there is little to do in that game but whack stuff and level up" what else do you want to be able to do in the game? I don't want to sound rude; I am curious what you think other actions should a player be able to do in a role playing game.

You last point kinda bugs me though.

The game is repetative. And yes, in most cases it is good that the leveling system improves over time. However, when the leveling system is boring, repetative and all together unrewarding, you are working harder and harder for literally nothing. Its not a game that brings unique and creative elements to the table, its a useless repetative cycle. And when most people make it to the maximum level, they start the useless cycle over again. My point that bugged you was about adding more to the game, to get away from that repetative experience.

I hate it because I played it and ended up hating it, I thought it was stupid. Besides, once you get through the story line, people decide to raid to get better armor to raid more. PVP I can understand but if your just doing "Raids" and "Heroics" I just don't understand why your wasting your time. It is exactly why I stopped playing Guild Wars, once I got through the campaigns, there was no longer any point in playing it.

I played Final Fantasy XI, it was part of my contractual agreement to hate WoW players - well, that's untrue, I was required to think of them as simpletons who couldn't handle the social component of team based goals and consider them to be generally lazy e-peen strokers... the hate grew on its own from that.

One of my best friends never finished high school because he got addicted when it first came out. Now, I recognize that was his decision and his own fault, but I still harbor resentment towards the game. That and I have no desire to pay a monthly fee for a game.

It's probably becuase it's a stigma that gamers have to carry with them, regardless of whether they play it or not. I can't tell you how many times I've heard that anti-gaming arguement "Oh, and I bet you play World of Warcraft, too."

Alternately, you create a browser based Java game that is -nothing- like WoW, and it becomes the 2nd biggest MMO in the world, by the name of RuneScape. In terms of paying subscribers as well as free players.

Immature community; no, not really. Having played and enjoyed the Blizzard RTS worlds and the lore involved with them, it just irritated me to no end to log into Azeroth and end up on 4Chan. Each is fine, but together they left a bad taste.
