I personally this list sums up the lack of talent in the guild.

When you have to nominate a direct movie adaptation for writing, there are few places you can sink to.

This 'guild' is a joke.

whys everyone attacking MW2? i liked the story. i found it quite fun to unravel maybe its only problem was that there were plot twists everwhere, but is that such a bad thing? but yeh the list is pretty crappy

WTFOMGBBQLOLCATFISHWTMFF?

"Eh hem... the winner is... Modern Warfare 2, for pinnical character progression and fantastically moving scenes.

OK, so that "marketing budget" you mentioned..."

Seriously. Ask yourselves, award ceremonies, if MW2 hadn't had all this publicity and hype, would you really have nominated it for... everything? I'm looking at you, Gametrailers (they nominated MW2 for the graphics. Just... unneccesary).

Almost enough to make me go over to Gamespot.

Well, not like there were that many games this year. Guess most video game writers aren't in the guild. My vote is for Screed 2.

Modern Warfare 2.

Riiight...

I can't say I agree, to put it at it's mildest.
Yeah. But, if they nominate Wet, they're probably going to pick Modern Warfare 2. The story wasn't as incredible as Uncharted 2 or Assassin's Creed 2 yet, they will pick it. I still think Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time had a better story than Modern Warfare 2. Yet, because of Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer they'll pick it.

-Woh my post is boring, Skirt
So they'll give a game a 'Best Writing Award' for a multi player element. There a lot of Story in that multi player?

I mean, any multi player element to most of the games i've played would be outclassed on literary terms by Crank. Don't get me wrong, i found Crank fecking hilarious, but i wouldn't call it a Masterpiece.
Did you even read my post? It was SARCASM . Modern Warfare 2's story was alright. It was not the best story of the year. What I meant was that it is a possibility that Modern Warfare 2 will win the Best Writing Award because of its multiplayer's influence. A lot of things win awards for an unrelated reason.

Well.. I didn't buy Modern Warfare 2 because of its story, that's for sure.

I haven't played Wet, X-Men or Uncharted 2, but knowing X-Men and Wet, I'm quite sure I'm not missing out on something. I'd like to check out Uncharted though.

My vote's going to AC2, simply because it's the only game, besides MW2, I have played from the list.
there was a story? I thought we were just trying to kill terrorists and russians?

MW2 and Wet?

What the fuck?

I get the others but what?
Agree... WTF. Hopefully AssAss 2 will get it :p The first one rocked my world
That would imply you have yet to play the second.

Am I correct?
Damn you're observant :S Ok ok, I know it's wrong to say that something deserves a reward without actually having neither played nor seen any big chunks of it (trying to save as much as I can so when i finally get it, bam!). But from what I've heard, they're actually putting some weight in the story, development of characters and script, kinda like the first one. And I loved the first one, finally a game with a kickass premise and not just an excuse to do stuff.

Am I going to hell now?
Of course not :p

The game is amazing and if you enjoyed the first's plot, you'll love the second's. Its much better, not that there was anything wrong with the first one.

Really? Any of those games had a story?

Okay, Assassin's... maybe.
Wet... sure.

MW2? Ohwell, pretentious people's farts can't always smell like lavender.

I wonder why the ignored every RPG/Jrpg in existance this year.. You'd think that games that stress story would appear over mindless action titles.

Xmen is a stupid decision because that's a comic book to pull anything the devs want from.

"To make standards in the industry..." of sucking I guess.

Well, MW2 and Wet can't really be taken seriously on that list, and the Wolverine game is iffy (more than half of the content was never in the movie, but the writing wasn't exactly stellar). AC2 should get the award (imo), although Uncharted 2 wasn't bad either. What bugs me is that Arkham Asylum isn't on that list, especially seeing how jokes like MW2 and Wet got nominations.

So, nobody else feels like the writing guild is just tossing scraps towards the video game industry with this? I mean, obviously it doesn't look for games, it just picks from a submitted list. I don't care about who is on the list, I don't think that the writing guild respects the story-telling of these projects to the extent that they should.

I guess it is nice that they acknowledge video games as a medium for writing, but it doesn't seem like they care about the subject at all, they are just doing it to appease some fans.

I'm pretty sure the odd choices have to do with the fact that writing for games is completely different from writing for film/tv/etc, and so the Writers Guild don't really know what they are doing here. I've read a number of dev blog horror stories about "hollywood hotshot" writers coming in and thinking they are going to make the video game Citizen Kane only to completely fail to grasp the impact of interactivity on the medium.

And Force Unleashed won an award? Maybe I should go look outside to make sure the rivers aren't running red with blood.
Oh, I wouldn't risk it. Those damned flying pigs are running rampant out there, and they can knock your head clean off if they get too close.

I haven't actually played AC2 or X-Men: Wolverine before, and I've only ever heard bad things about Wet. The only game I'm inclined to pick out of those is Uncharted 2, which I think I would have picked regardless of the addition of any other titles. Not the best shortlist I've seen...
