what's funny about this is that PS3 said they'll probably be making another console since the Japanese consumers get easily bored with technology. LOL.

(it was in Game Informer :X)

They'll be spitting out new consoles in 2012

wow, i just had to sign up to correct some of the ignorance shown on this forum.

Firstly the 360(and PS3 for that matter) are both already well out of date. The hardware in these machines is poor at best by todays standards. PCs have already gone through 3 generations of graphics hardware (nVidia's 8,9 and 200 series and ATi's HD2K, 3K and 4K). In fact console hardware wasnt even top of the line when it came out. Not to mention severe improvements in processors and memory, the PS3 and 360 are falling far behind the times.

That's nice to hear. Consoles will be more affordable.
Maybe this will also hold down developers from pushing the already expensive PC hardware too much as well.
PC hardware isnt expensive, you pay more to get the latest technology. Just like when a new console is released. Are you suggesting from this statement that you would like the 360 to last forever, and that no-one should bother to push the limits of technolgy and improve it?

Yeah, but PS3's main point of sell is graphics. In 5 years, PCs will be strong enough to emulate PS3 without much trouble. Hell, in two years we will have much better graphics AND fluid gameplay.
Right.

And how far along is the PS3 emulator?

That's what I thought.
Pffft, you need a top end computer just to emulate ps2 hardware.

A PC that emulates the 360 and ps3 may be two years off, but will cost about a thousand dollars to get running. Why not buy a 360 and ps3 for $600, and have $400 left for games and controllers?
Do you people even know what emulation is? Its creating software to "fake" a hardware configuration and reprogram a game to work on a different hardware. So not only do you have to have hardware good enough to run the game, but you also have to have a computer powerful enough to constantly change coding sequences, encode and decode data, etc. In order to do this at any sort of speed you need a damn powerful computer. Quit trying to make out that somehow because a PC cant emulate a console it isnt as powerful, I would love to see someone try (and fail) to get a gameboy game to run on a 360, no chance!

As for not bothering with emulation and getting a console, the point of emulators isnt to play PS3 or 360 games on todays PC hardware, the idea is to play these games on your PC in 3 or 4 years time. When your 360 has passed away and no new games are coming out, you can play the old classics on your PC without having to try to search ebay for an xbox that still works!

And for whoever said for the PS3's selling point being graphical power, are you mad? I would argue that MS putting asside an extra cache of graphical memory for dedicated AA is a much smarter move than pinning all your hopes on a "powerful" processor. In my opinion my 360 often outshines my PS3 graphicly with cross platform games.

On a more positive note some of you are using your brains, a 10 year life cycle simply means 10 years of support (support being the key word). So we will be seeing another console well before then, and the sooner the better.

Somehow I'm sceptical of this, as by 2015, the tech in it will be horrifically dated, not to mention the repair costs will keep on increasing. Personally, I see it coming to a close near the end of 2010, and Natal coming out with a new xbox.
Old tech hasn't stopped people releasing games for the PS2.

PS2 emulator already exists. PS3 emulator? I guess that as soon as i7 becomes the new standard. Maybe his successor, but it won't take much time.
Seems alotof people here dont know how much power emulators use. It's like copying handwriting. Sure you can write a page in 5 minutes in your own handwriting. But for someone to Identically copy your handwriting, It will take an experienced person MUCH longer than 5 minutes. Same with emulators. it takes MUCH more power to run a ps2 emulator than to just port the ps2 game to a pc. It's like me asking you to match my handwriting, but at a similar speed with the exact same tiny intricasies I use. It takes ALOT of power, so unless we get a magical emulating breakthru a ps3 emulator is out of the question until we get something like 32gb ram and waaay faster processors.

I was talking to Microsoft tech support about a Xbox Live 1 month trial card that I had that is three year old and whether it was still valid. The guy basically confirmed that the 360s do in fact have a 10 year cycle (at least that's what he's been told to say).

The problem is if Microsoft comes out with some new console in the next few years, say an "xbox 720" they'll have to make it significantly better power-wise than the 360. If it's still only on-par with the PS3, all they're doing is making their customers buy another console to play new games while PS3 owners get the same multi-platform titles on their original console; i.e minus $300-400.

Unfortunately that's unlikely to happen because to do that they'd have to come out with some ridiculously expensive console... But if they stick with the 360 for 10 years, or even 5 it'll be severly outdated by the time it's replaced.

Too bad each individual system doesn't have that life cycle.
Probably why they are not planning a new system for so long then.
I will be playing 360 until a new system comes out...but I doubt it will be the same exact system. Im already on number 3.

See, I see the bad on both sides. (Just not the same ammount)

Yeah, no shit. My first one got the RROD within 3 months of buying it and I sent it in for repairs, but that was back in 2007. Several months ago, a thunderstorm fried it and it wouldn't even boot up much less get to the RROD so I had to buy a brand new one and so far it hasn't glitched up yet.

10 year life cycle for a console? PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTTTTT!

The pc is already at least 12 generations of tech beyond the low grade garbage that's been shoved into consoles and called "Modern". If consoles are such awesome pieces of gear, then why am I still being forced to install directx9 runtimes on my directx10.2 compatible computer? [Edit] DirectX9, for those of you who've only owned consoles, is the graphics/sounds/acceleration libraries used for creating top of the line games over 6 years ago. Which is what your piddly little boxes are still limited to.

Truly, if it weren't for consoles and the masses of retard-based funds they provide, gaming would be at a far greater level than it is now. Consoles hold games development back, simple fact. I do honestly dare anyone to try and prove otherwise. Triple core celerons with video cards so old they don't even count as a low-end machine, and ram / hdds so out of date that toasters made in 2009 have more advanced hardware?

The sooner consoles die in the arse and stop fucking up the market the better. Viva La PC, the only true gaming platform.

Kindly look at the dates. This thread is about 3 months old and nobody cares about it.
oh and you'd want him to start a new thread and then scream SEARCH BUTTON! huh?
Why would we need this thread again? It's not like there is any discussion here.
