Pretty much. I fail to see how Facebook and iPads qualify as "gaming consoles." They were primarily designed to perform many different tasks, not just be a device that plays games. Hell, Facebook isn't even a physical object.

Back in high school many of my classmates spent lots of time playing games on their graphing calculators. That doesn't suddenly make the calculators "gaming consoles."

"Consoles have won!" Said the console creator.

Firstly, I didn't realize there was a fucking war. It's not like gamers can play on MULTIPLE PLATFORMS or anything.

Anyway, I hope this guy enjoys whatever distorted version of reality he lives in.

My mum was telling me about this gaming console she had at school called a wooden hoop. Her paper pad was also full of games like Tic Tac Toe.

Heh.

When your editor saw this article, I bet his or her face lit up with delight, possibly accompanied by a "cha-ching" sound.

...

On a mostly unrelated note, does anyone else wish all this division would just go away? I suppose it's kind of inevitable given the intensely commercial nature of the industry, but, well... it's rather tiresome and frequently borders on childish.

This. I wouldn't expect a Microsoft guy who isn't Bill Gates to be smart, but this guy is completely STUPID. His argument is that everything that runs games is a console, and therefor consoles have won. Not only is his argument a logical fallacy, but he's completely disregarded the fact that PC gaming is very strong right now as well. In fact, what he said implies that all PCs ever made will fail because they aren't consoles. I don't see Dell or HP going out of business. Do you?

Besides which, it's not about which one wins. This war of consoles vs. PC is entirely stupid. Without consoles, gaming would be too expensive and complicated to get into and wouldn't have the massive audience it has today. Without computers, gaming would become stagnant, boring, and without innovation (not to mention the death of mods >:O). I like to own and use both, and I'd hate to see one die. The XBox has proven that gaming can even suffer from one having more gamers than the other, let alone one winning over the other.

Arguing the specifics of the word "Console" and other semantics do not magically make the reality any less there.

Console, in this frame of reference, has always referred to the variously shaped boxes that people smack down in front of their TV's, grab a controller, throw in a game, and play. Yes, you could probably call the other devices such as an Ipad or Ipod a "Console", if you were feeling ridiculous and wanted to make an entirely pointless point (Yes, i know what i just typed.)

I mean, this is up there on some of the most absurd logic I've ever seen. He's saying that because you can call technically call an Ipad or Facebook a gaming "console", that the traditional consoles have succeeded? Thats like saying Beta succeeded because VHS won the video tape war.

Of course there's always going to be an Ipad, a facebook, or a cloud. Its a distribution method and a platform, we can't just absorb games from some infinite ether. Though, with this guys logic, i suppose if we did figure out how to do that, he'd call the infinite ether a console.

I don't get the vibe that he is saying consoles have won the gaming war, I get that he is saying that platforms that play games have won the platform war.

In other words, if your product has the best of everything, including price, but does not play games well, it will not be nearly the success as anything else that does play games well.

"The victory of games is utterly complete with Apple. It's a total victory,"

This is comedy gold right here.

Good blanket statement, but I can do you one better: "Electronic Micro-Processors Have Won!"

I have a laptop PC, which is more portable (and powerful) than the vaunted Xbox 360. Does that count as a console now? Under his logic, it could.

This is just a non-news article based around an idiot speaking in vague nothings for the sake of stirring up old controversy.

Wash, Spin, repeat.

Wait... what?

I'm confused and afraid on so many levels. But not surprised since these words came from a console creator!

How can you say consoles have "won" when those things like Steam go from strength to strength all the time. I'm not saying PC gaming has won, but consoles definitely haven't either!
i think he was just stating that consoles are everywhere now and that mobile devices are consoles at this point. also he ,nor anyone ive read about recently, didnt say pc gaming was dead but if when by numbers yeah consoles win, by a fucking landslide.

In other news, anything that can play games, regardless of other features, is now a console. As a result, so is Minecraft.

*Checks current online Steam users. Sees the number "3,142,586"*

Oh yeah, consoles and their innumerable COD, Halo and Gears of War have won alright ... *rolls eyes*

Actually, a Minecraft console would be cool! Or a PC Case that looks like Minecraft dirt.

As much as the PC fanboys will get their panties in a twist from the headline he really wasn't disrespecting PC in any way. Just reflecting on how the consoles have been successful compared to their own expectations.
