Is anyone really surprised to hear this considering the news that you'll have to buy fighters for Killer Instinct?
As I understand it, that is one way to get the characters if you want to, but not the only way. I thought it was buy the game, or if you prefer you can play it piecemeal with just the characters you're interested in.
As for the point of this article and RYSE, well I wouldn't have bought that game anyway. But it's still pretty despicable.
According to the Escapist article I heard this from, Killer Instinct is going to be a free downloadable game featuring a single fighter. $5 per each additional fighter, or you can buy 8 for $20.
That may be what you read, but it isn't what you said. You CAN buy them one at a time or you can bundle them up.
Check the original post of mine that you quoted...."You have to pay for characters." Bundle or one at a time.....you're still paying for characters. How is that not what I said?
As for why I'm painting it in a negative light...are you kidding me? You don't find the very concept/principle of a fighting game in which you have to pay money to unlock the fighters to be disgusting? If you don't, meh, to each their own I guess. No real point in discussing it.
Well, for starters you don't have just the option of buying the characters one at a time, there are bundle packs and a disc version of the game. But to be fair, let me go back and check like you suggest:

I really wanna know why Microsoft seems hell-bent on making their next-gen console so unattractive. Granted this one could be Crytek's call rather than Microsoft's, but still...that makes 2 Xbox Exclusives that are part of "THE GREATEST LAUNCH LINE-UP IN HISTORY!!!" that have thus far made themselves absolutely unappealing to (I'm guessing) the majority of the gamer market. So far, MS is failing to uphold that lofty "best in history" claim.
You can choose to buy them one at a time if you want to. I don't see how more options is a bad thing. This isn't Plants vs Zombies 2 where you could pour a hundred bucks into it and still not have everything. $5 gets you basically an entire game and online features.
If I could buy Street Fighter 4 with only the characters I wanted and only have to pay $10 or $15 instead of $60, and still take my main into any online mode, and story mode, any mode the game has to offer, I can't see that as a negative.
The Killer Instinct thing and the RYSE thing are worlds apart. There's no random pay-to-loot option in KI (that we know of at this time). If there were, I'd be right there with you crying foul. And if it comes to pass I'll be happy to eat crow. But given the available data that I have it sounds like an interesting new model. And since everyone will have a free copy of the game with one character (Jago is free), that's an instant player base to keep the community going.
If you want to hate anything but the standard $60 model be my guest. I'm just saying that there's more to the story than just "$5 pay per character!".
