I think, that title is a little misleading, because he actually didnt say, that games will be playable, only that servers just never go off (yeah, right)...
Or, you know, it could be they're just not planning on leaving the servers up until the end of the console generation, and they intend to kill them early.

I mean, that'd fit the specific wording of the question too.

So what about when the servers go down midway through the generation (or at launch for that matter)? Will I be able to keep playing my games then? Somehow I doubt it.

Technically they aren't lying as your games will continue to function, but your Xbone will simply refuse to run them when it can't phone home the day after the servers go offline.

That's the catch you see. In a single swoop it both lies to us and tells the truth, so that years down the line when we cry foul Microsoft can pull that little clarification out of their back pocket like a legendary flame shield looted from the corpse of the grand overlord of the nine hells.

These Microsoft executives are just scum, pure fucking scum.

So the best time to get a Xbone would be when the servers are shut down because we won't have to deal with the DRM?

Oh no.

What's that...fog moving in? I can't see anything at all...IT'S THE FOG OF MICROSOFT'S POOR PR!

Cower in fear as questions are dodged and answered in cliches! Can you hope to escape the gibbering buzzwords writhing in the mist?

Yeah, I'm totally fucking done with this shit. If microsoft are gonna go in this direction, the least they could do is be clear about their crap.

I certainly would go on the amazing journey with the girl that was interviewing him, with Xbone not so much.
Because a Journalists perceived attractiveness (or lack thereof) is the most important thing when consumers need some clear info about any potential anti consumer practices...

Great. Maybe I'll get one when the generation ends.

But he didn't answer anything. He kept saying 'flexibility'.

And if the games can be played once the servers go down, doesn't that mean that their cloud processing is bullshit?

And what about when the servers go down during the generation cycle? Which happens even to the best of servers all the time.

AND HOW HOT IS THAT GIRL? OH MY GOD!

Um, so people don't PIRATE THE GAMES?

Isn't that obvious?

That's the whole point of DRM.
People will still pirate it anyway. I guarantee that within a month of the console being released that pirates will have cracked the DRM.

So there is no point in making paying customers suffer through all this bullshit.

This is SimCity all fucking over again!

`When the servers go down your Xbone will work just fine`

Then why the fuck is there a 24 hour, or if I am playing at a friends house, hourly check up where I have to fucking prove, an infinite amount of times, that I am not a thief and did not steal the games I bought. They basically blatantly admit there is a way to turn off the 24 hourly check up and they just don´t give a shit about you. You are there to serve the company and buy games so they get more money. What will happen when they go down during the console´s life span?

No, no, that would be nice, but read the question again, what he's saying is they're not going to take down the servers the instant the console generation ends... they'll probably wait a week or two and then kill the servers.

Yeah, it sounded to me too like he is just avoiding the question by saying that they wouldn't shut it down in the first place.

Also, lots of weasel words without explicitly giving an accountable promise. "It's not something that we would do" is a lot more vague than "we won't do it".

So either they're planning to never shut down the servers (which of course is complete bull and is going to enrage people when they do it) or singleplayer stuff can be played offline perfectly fine.

Jesus christ I thought all their digging was done but they're just chucking in more and more shovels into this hole.

What is this assumption that there are some servers that will be shut down when the next console launches? You can still authenticate Windows XP, despite there being a Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. Authentication doesn't need some dedicated machines that can ONLY authenticate the Xbox One. Whatever they use to authenticate the next Xbox will be able to authenticate the Xbox One. Not to mention their transition to a flexible cloud compute architecture that uses as many virtual machines as are needed for a given task. "Shutting down servers" is an outdated concept. There is no need.
