That loop just doesn't get old... ;)

I mean, how are they not getting the hint at this point that feedback is negative? Hell, a simple web search will reveal that fact.
...
Then again, they DO use IE and Bing over there... :/

This is what you get in big business now at the top, these people have virtually nothing to do with getting things done or making things happen they just make stupid decisions based on what other equally unqualified bigwigs in marketing are telling them, like what business plan will maximise profits and thinking paid focus groups are a perfect measure of their customer base.

I can just picture the meeting.

Microsoft Executive A -

You see with all the things were including on the Xbox One it's like social hub people won't need anything else!

Microsoft Executive B -

So I can ditch my iPhone/android and use the amazing Xbox One instead!

Microsoft Executive A -

Well no you can't use it as a phone....

Microsoft Executive B -

But I'll be able to ditch my iPad/Tablet and use it on the go...wow!

Microsoft Executive A -

Well no it's not a mobile device at all so no not really..

Microsoft Executive B-

But with it's amazing features it will replace my Smart TV!

Microsoft Executive A -

Well not really the Smart TV is stand alone while the Xbox One needs a TV to be used....

Microsoft Executive B-

At least it will be a great gaming console where I can play anywhere and if I live in a less developed area in the US or other countries I don't have to use Xbox Live!

Microsoft Executive A -

Erm well you see....

Microsoft Executive B-

And if I'm not that well off I can always buy used games from Games Stop or elsewhere!

Microsoft Executive A -

Ah...

Microsoft Executive B-

It's brilliant!! so much so we can price it higher that our direct rivals and people will pay!

Microsoft Executive A -

It hasn't gone down very well so far with the public...

Microsoft Executive B-

Have you told them they are ignorant inbreeding moron's who are lucky were here to educate them!

Microsoft Executive A -

Naturally.

The world is online now. Your ability to use games you purchased can never be impacted by factors outside of your control, because no game server will ever be down.

This is the forward thinking mentality that gave us two of the most "smooth" PC gaming launches of recent years -- Diablo 3 and Sim City 2013. If you think the current situation is a PR nightmare, wait until the XBone launches and no-one is able to play the games they bought because the XBox game servers crash from being overloaded with too many activations.

When Sony got hacked two years ago, I lost the ability to play online when they took the PSN down. But, I could still buy a new game and play it offline until the network was restored. This option will be impossible with the XBone. And, if there were a security network outage, Microsoft would be incentivized to get the servers up as quickly as possible, rather than take the time to make sure the security holes were fully patched and tested.

Don Mattrick really needs to shut up.
I can still play games offline on my pc, cell Phone, and itouch even if I have not been connected to the internet for 24 hours. your analogy is bad and you should feel bad.

How does that saying go? "Lower than Satan's wine cellar..." or something to that effect.

I remember one person saying that Microsoft would likely sell the XOne with internet access, kind of like how mobile phones come at a discount if you but it with a contract. I can only imagine how it would play out then.

As it stands, MS is WAY too early on always online, not to mention the handling of games. Still, can't shake the early Steam out of my mind, as stupid as that is

They just won't stop, will they? They're not even trying a new approach, learning from their mistakes, they're just beating a dead horse. They need to show, not tell. You're saying how awesome 'the cloud' will be, and then not giving any details. Tell us what games will be able to do, not just that they'll be able to do things. Show us an example or something, because as it stands, WE DON'T BELIEVE YOU.

And even with that, the PS4 will be perfectly capable of running games which require online functionality, and the PC has done so for YEARS (they're called MMOs). The fact that your Xbone has to check in with the mothership every 24 hours has nothing to do with the capabilities of the games I'm playing, and everything to do with inconveniencing me in the name of a used game feud that I have no interest in being party to, or being on that particular side, for that matter.

You know, the whole 'share games instantaneously with up to 10 people' thing had me rethinking my position on the Xbone. Thanks for reminding me what a terrible, terrible idea it's going to be.

"If you think how your smartphone works, how your tablet works" I... have none, I don't care about none, I don't even have a FB account, but those things don't stop working because I didn't connect to the internet when they wanted me to. And I particularly don't need a "cloud centered community" to communicate with my friends in real time on a GAMING console.

But what do I care, I play on my PC anyways...

No one is saying being online all the time is a bad thing. We are just saying why the damn thing needs to stop working if we aren't online.

Why is this so hard for the executives at microsoft to understand?

You know with the giant amount of crap being heaped up on Microsoft I almost expect the Xbone to sell extremely well.

Why do I say that? Well remember the 360? That thing was a shoddily constructed piece of ass but it sold amazingly well. Becoming basically Console #1 (I would have counted the Wii had I used it in the past 3 years). Then we had the Xbox notorious for literally eating your games and setting your house on fire when it overheated. Not to mention you have Xbox Live a pay to use your own internet service from Microsoft that basically anyone who owned the console uses and brings in a massive amount of money for MS.

I would not be surprised, at all if the sheep gamer masses and the fanboys buy enough Xbones to make it into a success. I mean seriously think about it. These are people who bought multiple of the same console because it broke within a year slightly after the warranty went off. These are the people that pay money to connect their console to the internet.

A console that you don't own any of the games your bought for and spies on you when you don't use it? Not that big of a stretch.

In rebuttal to this phenomefuckinglystupid remark by this MS idiot.

Some towns in the US don't even have fucking telephone lines. They use cellphones because there are no cables. Roughly 1/5th of the world has adequate unlimited access to internet and even then only about half of those have ones of any moderate speed. Roughly half of the people on earth have some kind of connection to the internet, with some kind of I mean at least some way of reaching a place where there is internet. Like if they really needed to send an e-mail or look at porn they could go to an internet cafe. 1/4th of the world population doesn't even have access to fucking phones let alone internet.

This planet is quite nice to life on here in one of the richest countries in the world (not the US btw, that place sucks ever since 2000 :p) but outside of this little First World bubble, shit is quite crappy. Some of the people that develop games need to smuggle desk chairs over state borders. Wake the fuck up Microsoft Execs!

Four letters: DDoS.

Just because "the world" is always online doesn't mean your servers are. Anyone who wants to make your entire installed base hate you just has to keep a DDoS up for 24 hours, then gets to watch as every complaint channel you have gets flooded just as badly by your customers. And that's assuming the day one purchases don't DDoS it for them.

Also worth pointing out, we've seen some really scary increases in DDoS volume in the last six months. We've seen attacks in the 300Gb/s range already this year.

And this was a sustained attack.

I don't care how bullet proof Microsoft thinks their servers are; there's a real risk, come Black Friday, they'll get knocked offline and stay there. If it earns a reputation in the first few weeks as a console that can't actually play games, that'll be it for them.

Don...

Stop.

Just..stop.

I realize you might be going for "I'm going to dig this hole so deep it punches through", but by the time you get there, your competitors have already taken a foothold. I also realize you might be counting on the initial outrage slowly washing over, just like Occupy did when people started to be slightly uncomfortable, and I realize you might be counting on customers with no purchasing self-control to fork over their money because they need this exclusive right now, so they'll bend over without thinking.

I realize that in case Xbone flops, you'll hide behind the claims as to how the public simply doesn't understands the distilled awesomeness that your product is.

But in the end, if you refuse to listen, you'll be ill equipped to keep a long term presence in the market. For your sake, I hope Windows 9 is going to be good.

Yeah, there's still a blind spot in the underground metro between Castro Street Station and Forest Hill Station where my phone loses connectivity. It used to be the whole subway system. Then BART got wired.[footnote]There was an incident in which BART shut down its underground connectivity to attempt to thwart a flash-mob protest, and ended up getting a riot for its efforts.[/footnote] Then MUNI started getting wired as well.

But even in that blind spot, I can still access my calendar. I can still access my shopping lists. And when I had Angry Birds installed, I could still play that.

Most tablets are still very functional when WiFi goes out.

Big MS is soooooo not getting the picture. I assume that the talking heads just aren't listening, as they should have dozens of marketing guys and science girls telling them the part they don't understand.

What this thick burke continues too fail to understand, is that people buy a games console to play games. You don't buy a wrench too smack your own cock with, you buy it too loosen and tighten nuts and bolts, that's the essence of getting a specialized tool for a specialized job. He's going too wank the entire games division of Microsoft away if he doesn't stop talking, and that's a fact.

The world is changed.
I feel it in the water.
I feel it in the earth.
I smell it in the air.
Much that once was, is lost.
For none now live who remember it.

*cue the music*

On a more serious note though I find myself agreeing slightly with the man. But even though online connectivity is continuing to increase in importance it doesn't mean that you should force people to use a system which threads on the edge between consumer and company rights and disrupts the basic concept of ownership.

More and more Mattrick sounds like a drowning man who insists that the water he is drowning in is actually strawberry custard, and that it is very very yummy.

Does he have a specific schedule of idiotic press statements that he must adhere to between now and launch? Because this really is an amazing stream of steady daily stupidity. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Yes Going online is a huge convenience, benefit and productivity boost. But oddly it isn't a necessity for all of those devices you mention (save possibly Windows 8. How's that working out for you all?). They all work just fine for their primary purpose should hey be disconnected from the interweb a for days weeks or months.
