I was talking to a friend the other day and I mentioned Mad Max. To which my friend responded "Mad what?". Turns out they had never heard of let alone seen any of the Mad Maxs. Same person had also never heard of let alone seen Apocalypse Now. This person is 18 so they should have at least heard of them.

So tell me... what things do you think are really famous that made a person just look at you kind of confused when you mention them?

EDIT: not really related but I just remembered they are making a 4th Mad Max movie. Can not remember when it's supposed to be coming out though.

In former USSR, most people haven't ever heard of Citizen Kane. Population of Escapist's forums will look at me funny if i mention Cheburashka. A double-edged sword indeed.

Samson and Delilah - Was talking to my workmate about hair for some reason, and I said if I cut off my beard I would loose all my power. A wtf moment later and explaining the reference he hadn't a clue about the aforementioned - He is 5 years my senior (DoB on my profile).

Do you know there are actually life forms out there that haven't seen Predator yet? Let alone heard of it?

In the words of the movie itself:

Seriously, see that movie everyone! And then watch Alien and Aliens.
I've never seen it.. and i never knew Arnold (Inset spelling of last name here) was in it untill a few days ago..

I've seen all of the Alien movies though and loved every one of them.

I hate it for blatantly ripping off The Punisher.
If you hate people ripping off the punisher you might not want to watch Law Abiding Citizen. Its pretty much the punisher background with the guy in prison killing people.

Then you'll probably like Predator. Predator 2 is terrible though, avoid that. In fact, the only good one is Predator 1.
I think i have it downloaded on video somewhere, ill have to find it out.

Not many of today's young people have ever heard of Jane's Addiction, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Deep Purple, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ray Charles, Porcupine Tree, Pearl Jam, Tool, A Perfect Circle, etc. Some of them can't even point out Michael Jackson if you had pictures of the greatest artists and bands in front of them, yet modern music owes a big deal to those bands and artists (just to mention a few). Our youth has no respect for the roots of music, they just care about what's in at the very moment.

Oh, and I'm 20 (but I'm apparently 27 according to those "how old are you REALLY?" tests :( I feel like I'm 60...)

To be honest, I don't recall watching Mad Max or Apocolypse Now, but it's rather because I'm more into the internet and computer games than TV and films.

About half my work hasn't heard of: The Beatles, War Of The Worlds (any version!), Monty Python, AC/DC, Batman, Star Wars, Sonic The Hedgehog, Metallica, Top Gear, or Scrubs.

Just to name a few...

Wait, you mean it the other way around, right? Or are you talking about the comic book? If that's the case, then the only thing that Mad Max did was use a fairly generic plot point that has been used many times over. You don't think the Punisher was the first ever to use those plots do you? That's like those guys who said that Avatar rips off Halo. There's always something that preceded it, so really, there is no such thing as a ripoff unless they copy it almost verbatim and try to sell it as a new idea, which they didn't.

Well if its any better than the two horrible AvP Movies, i'll try that too. Plus the predator is my favourite of the three, dispite the fact i've never seen any of the films.

Woah, I guess I am that person.
But then, I find being painfully oblivious to [slightly older] pop culture to be a boon sometimes. The usual reaction is "OHMIGOD how have you never seen random movie?! We have to watch it NOW."

That's rather fun.

Well do you have respect for everything that made todays things possible? Todays films, games, phones etc. In a time when technology quickly becomes superseded within months and everybody wants the latest thing, no body respects were they came from only remember them when they become nostalgic.

Sorry that was off topic, just thought it needed saying.

A little more on topic, I wish I didn't know of somethings, such as Micheal Jackson, Twilight and alcohol but alas.

I am shocked when somebody says they have never seen fight club, I don't know why.

Wait a minute! That annoying little bear thing!

That's what it is, right?

My stupidly precise memory comes in handy again!
Yes. "Bear-thing" is as close as it gets to describing him.

I'm amazed my father, who was still in his 20's when they were fairly popular, has never heard of Deep Purple. Or Thin Lizzy for that matter.

Me and my brother are both into rock/metal music and once when Megadeth were mentioned on Coronation Street, my mum thought that the writers had just made up some random band name. Me and my brother were patting my mum on the head and going "aww, it's ok mum"! We figured she paid more attention when we talked about stuff. Obviously not XD
