Our youth has no respect for the roots of music, they just care about what's in at the very moment.
Well do you have respect for everything that made todays things possible? Todays films, games, phones etc. In a time when technology quickly becomes superseded within months and everybody wants the latest thing, no body respects were they came from only remember them when they become nostalgic.
I don't listen to Deep Purple because it's nostalgic, I respect the band and it's achievements, and most of all enjoy the music "even though it's old". I also enjoy older movies as well as newer ones, just a few weeks ago I watched The Maltese Falcon from 1942, and I liked it. Besides I also enjoy to map out what happened when so that I can better understand why things are what they are today, I like to draw parallels to see how far back things go.

We seem to miss out on the fact that it's because of the older stuff that our new shiny things actually exist, but no one honors or respects that anymore.

It's also to do with newer technology is better, nobody downgrades tech unless they have to.

Another reason is, it's new, if you've heard the same song 1,000 times you would rather hear something new than the same song for the 1,001 time.

Seriously, see that movie everyone! And then watch Alien and Aliens.
What this guy said, except see Alien first and then Predator. It's better when you start with the oldest.

Sorry that was off topic, just thought it needed saying.
No body? The people who are interested in learning do respect it all actually. Soon after I hit 20 I suddenly became curious on how things came to be and where artists drew their inspiration.

A little more on topic, I wish I didn't know of somethings, such as Micheal Jackson, Twilight and alcohol but alas.
What's wrong with Michael Jackson?

OT: You don't know The Simpsons!? Have you been living on another planet? It's impossible not to know about The Simpsons.

He is praised as some kind of musical messiah, a god in the pop world when I think he was a total tool with terrible music and worse dance moves than Elvis.

Thats just his musical side, his personal life is who different thing I don't know the details of his life 'cos I don't look into things I hate but what the hell did he do to his face? Why was he so insane as to dangle his baby over a balcony and name them stupid names? Why did he make them wear veils? Why did he sleep with children?

I know people who give two shits about him will rip me apart with facts like he abused in some way by dear daddy but I will still hate him so don't waste your time.

If he did indeed invent a type of music, we would have it without him the music still would have been created ... just a little later.

I had a friend who had never seen pulp fiction, resorvior dogs, or any of the other classic tarantino movies as well as the Big Lebowski. Needless to say he has been shown the light of classic movies.

Yeah fair enough and I'm not the type that wastes my time bickering rubbish.

However I must say he didn't get taught all the life lessons as a kid like we did, just religion and stuff. We would be fucked up like him as well with such a lack of good parenting.

Also I didn't forget you said you hate his music and don't think he is talented at all but you really are taking music for granted if you think such great riffs would pop up later. Hell musicians these days seem to be incapable of making really powerful riffs like the classical and classic rock of old.

Not many of today's young people have ever heard of Jane's Addiction, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Deep Purple, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ray Charles, Porcupine Tree, Pearl Jam, Tool, A Perfect Circle, etc. Some of them can't even point out Michael Jackson if you had pictures of the greatest artists and bands in front of them, yet modern music owes a big deal to those bands and artists (just to mention a few). Our youth has no respect for the roots of music, they just care about what's in at the very moment.

Oh, and I'm 20 (but I'm apparently 27 according to those "how old are you REALLY?" tests :( I feel like I'm 60...)
I'm not just agreeing with you to sound cool or anything but that's the kind of music I grew up with. You forgot to mention; The Yardirds, The Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, Golden Earring, Bad Company, Foghat, Allman brothers band, etc.

BTW I can't stand this modern crap.

No-one I know knows of M.A.G.

Sorry I don't belive that, his brother is Jermain and his sister is Latoya? (I know he had/has more but there the only two I know) I haven't spent alot of time listening to them but they seem a damn site more "normal" than Micheal ever was, for a kick off they look like humans, not like somebody left Barbie near a fire.

Whats the old adage? Given an infinite number of monkeys and and infinite amount of time they would write Shakespeare? Same applies here, one day the songs would be written ... maybe not verbatim but still pretty close.

I'm stunned whenever I come across someone who has never heard of The Godfather or Guns 'N Roses. To be fair I'm still discovering plenty of stuff that everyone else knows so it's kinda even.

I saw an episode of Joey with my girlfriend yesterday and the guy that played Data in Star Trek did a cameo. And i said
"Hey, thats the guy who plays Data"
"Data?"
-You know the guy from Star Trek"
"Star Trek?"
-You havent heard about Star Trek?

And i explained the show and she realises she knew about the series when she thought about it.
And she said:

"but I have never heard of this Data fella. Do i look like someone who watches Star Trek!?"
"- Yes, yes you do" was my answer to that.

No sex for me that night...

Michael literaly has been busy all his life and no one ever told him what to do because he was a full blown celebrity. Then he built his fun land and took care of children because he never got the same treatment he wish he did, unfortunatly for him he was never taught sleeping with kids isn't normal at his age, this is fact.

And as for story structure, well most people believe they have all been made and it is impossible to invent a new but a new riff is a lot different. I reckon there are many great riffs yet to be invented and as you said, it never would have been exactly the same, we would probably be dead by the time someone else finally thinks of these riffs, I prefer to have them now as well as a million of other people.

Chatting to a girl one night.Conversation turns to music. She asks who my favourite bands are.So I mention a few bands and in fairness she's heard of 1 or 2 of them. However I'm met with a blank look when I mention Black Sabbath

Her: "Black who?"
Me: "Sabbath.Famous band, one of the founders of Heavy Metal etc.
Her: "Nope never heard of them"
Me: "Ozzy Osbourne was their original singer"
Her "Ozzy who?"

Now I can understand someone who's not into metal not knowing about Sabbath but not knowing who Ozzy is?The guy and his wife have been everywhere for the last 10 years or so

We basically agree on the last part, except you want it now and I would want them not in my life time.

I bet nobody ever said to him don't stab anybody either and he never did that, in fact nobody ever says to anybody by the way don't sleep with kids, kill anybody etc you just know you shouldn't do it.

Even if that isn't true, I very highly doubt that somebody wouldn't have said "by the way Micheal stop / don't sleep with any kids under 16/18/21", did he just say "but I like it"?

Or did nobody cross pass with the great jacko.

Well you make good points because I'm not sure exactly but it was pretty much nobody crossed his path.

Also saying you don't want these riffs in your life time is pretty selfish. This whole hate thing is over the top, I didn't like him and his music at first but I realised he is just an entertainer and he made so many people happy with his awesome dancing.

I've heard of all those bands/people, and I'm 19. In fact, Tool and A Perfect Circle are 2 of my favorite bands. I haven't heard much of Jane's Addiction, But what I have heard I've liked.

Its the opposite for me, people mentions modern (as in, in the last 2 years) and I have no Idea of what they are talking about. i like stuff from about 1990 to about now, not counting crap you hear on the radio.

I had a roommate, a few years older then me, that never saw E.T.

And

I was talking about my favorite thing to order at Subway with soneone at work, and another guy who was with us asked "Subway? What kind of food do they have there?"

Actually that second story would have fit right in with that Facepalm thread going around today.

I feel ashamed saying that I didn't know who Evel Knevel (pardon my spelling) was until last year.

But, OT: Not many people in my school know Monty Python, Queen, or the movie Citizen Kane
