I make one flawless, rational and logical comment against whatever it is they're doing to the conversation. When they don't back down (not that I would ever hope or expect them to) I do as Louis C.K. suggests and I just start having a completely different and unrelated argument with them, about something completely random.

Most of the time it depends on the forum. Some places, like here, which are pretty well moderated and aren't troll friendly, just ignoring them and posting whatever you were going to works every time. Some other places, particularly a certain forum for a certain MMO, where the trolling will come thick and fast, I find the best bet is just make a post in a funny fashion or kinda troll someone too. May as well fit in.

I really wanna try the "it's not your fault" routine on a troll, but, I feel that would only work in person, or at least over voice chat like on a video game.

Counter troll of course. Its how we used to do it on Kong. We'd end up asking them if their mothers abused them as a child and if they got used by their dads. Was fun times.

I don't think people here understand what a troll is.

They seem to think someone disagreeing, or generally not being nice is trolling.
From what ive seen the majority here do, only the odd one who cant handle being made to look like a fool after posting a stupid thread/post.

I rarely realise I'm being trolled until too late. They get me with simple disagreement or differing opinions before spiraling wildly into mis-interpreting, ignoring, lying, insinuating and accusations. :S :D At which point I generally just ignore them.

Look at your comment, now back to mine. Now back at your comment now back to mine. Sadly it isn't mine, but if you stopped trolling and started posting legitimate comments it could look like mine. Look down, back up, where are you? You're scrolling through comments, writing the comment your comment could look like. What did you post? Back at mine, it's a reply saying something you want to hear. Look again the reply is now diamonds. Anything is possible with legitimate comments. I'm in a chair.
I'm so saving and using that against a troll

OT: I really don't have a anti-troll comment as I ignore trolls or let others deal with them.

Typically? Not realize it and do what I always do when people disagree with me: Explain myself, apologize for possibly offending them, proceed to shut up and leave the thread.

Stupid, but then, that's me.

I usually rate the troll internally. If they're funny, I ignore them. If they're earnest (that is, not necessarily a troll, just wrong in a vocal, obnoxious manner) then I respond, and if they're boring, I offer them suggestions as to how they might be a less crap troll next time. However...

This is the best response ever typed by mortal hands.

Well, considering that us trolls are really misunderstood, and want to help in some sort of extremely difficult and roundabout way, I'd say I'd listen to myself.

Oh, wait, you're not talking about MSPA trolls. Then the only winning move is to not respond to the troll. Of course, there is a difference between being a troll and being a critiquing asshole...

No! Bad! The only way to defeat a troll is not to fight. Or be a mod.
Mentlegen?

My anti-troll comment is no a comment. It is a Bansword to the face.

I recommend others use the report button, though the Old Spice Guy parody was certainly entertaining.

Some guy tried to troll a forum me and my buddies visited.

One of my friends was a mod.

He changed every post to things such as "I like to suck my own c**k".

Then he made the post uneditable.

Many lols were had.

Ugh. I'm so ineffective against trolls. I keep thinking that logic and intellect can defeat them, and it doesn't. And despite the fact that my arguments are correct and logically sound, I still end up looking like an idiot for arguing in the first place.

If you've ever been to GameFaqs Books & Literature board, you know what I'm talking about.

I make a witty comment so that the troll realizes I'm way out of his league.

Generally my response. People say 'any response is a win for the troll', but to me, pointing out shenanigans then moving on is perfectly reasonable.

Unless I'm feeling a little cheeky in which case I go about systematically destroying their soul.
