The Anglo-Zanzibar War in 1896. 38 minutes of pure pwnage.
ah, back in the good old Empire day's old boy!

Ruling the world was rather easy back in them days, all you needed was a couple of gunboats to keep the native's in order.

Here's another exhample of epic Pwnage-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Omdurman

"Around 10,000 Ansar were killed....Kitchener's force lost 48 men"

You just don't win battle's or war's that easy nowadays, so i do feel sorry for the American's XD
Britain was a super power at the right time.

Now, for me the most interesting war is, and call me unoriginal, WW2. It had a clear set of bad guy's and fought all over the world. Now Hollywood and the game industry has done it to death. In fact making it rather uninteresting.

So, my second choice would be the Napoleonic War's. Epic sea and land battle's, and Britain's victory lead it to becoming the unquestioned world super power until WW1.

USSR

Probably your average communist.

Yes, let's pick our favorite event where countless people, military and civilian alike, died because of some petty government squabble.

Because I'm unoriginal I'll go with WWII. I consider it the point where history gets especially interesting and it greatly helped in defining the modern world.

I love war so much that it's my second favourite thing after icecream.
What about a war over ice cream, or better yet fought with ice cream?

Y'know, if you don't find the topic intresting, don't post. Countless? I'm pretty sure we have numbers for most, if not all of them. ^_^

Favorite war? I can't really say I have a favorite. I'm a history buff, so I 'like' just about all of them.
But, if I had to choose, I'd have to go with WWII. Mostly because that's the most recent war involving everybody. Meaning some new fighting tactics came into being to match the new technology at the time, and sometimes the wits of some commanders was outstanding.
The pacific portion was pretty interesting to, even though I think we [The Americans at least] took the ***** way out.
"It saved hundreds of thousands of lives"
They killed civilians, nuff said.
-_-
I'd say it saved more than it killed in the end, the Japanese leader was insane. He would have sent every civilian into battle anyways. Just be happy the allies won the war before Germany got nukes or we'd all be dead/unborn right now.
both Germany and Japan had cancelled their nuclear research programs by 1942 due to insufficient manpower and resources...
Did they? Well, I wonder why they had insuficient resources. *Wink wink, nudge nudge*

The American Civil War. It did so much for this country. Without that war, the country probably wouldn't have made it to WW1, much less help defeat the Nazis later on.
America didnt do shit in Europe during world war 2. the americans just keep saying they did all the hard work. D-Day wasnt an important event, since the Soviet Union was already stomping on Germany´s hands, wearing spiked boots.
The U.S. helped a lot in the liberation of France, I'd say the ol' U.K. and Russia were both more importaint than the U.S. in that war though. While it was true the Russians were winning-ish, they wouldn't have been able to retaliate and take germany without the attack on the western front.
i believe that the U.K could´ve handled the western front if they were ordered to it. and seriously? winning-ish? Germany was completely taken off guard by Russia´s counterattack. the US wouldnt have gotten their chance if it wasnt for the Russians.
Their counter-attack was taking back the land they lost mostly, Russian winter strikes again. Russia is invincible to full on attacks like that. (During winter) Still, Russia couldn't have won that war against Germany without the help of Brittian, they were fighting half of the German army when the attacks on the west front started.
you forgot to mention that throughout the entire war, Hitler was continuously taking resources away from Operation Barbossa to fight againt the western allies.
I'm pretty sure that was clear when I said that the Russians were fighting about half the German army. :/
lets keep this debate to a minimum because the Russians would be nothing without the US. same could be said to the Brits before the US entered the war. Lend - Lease: look it up

OT: I'de have to say WW1, The pacific theater of WW2, Euro gets old, and any Roman battles

I cant really say that any war is my favorite, being that they are generally just massive money makers for the Military Industrial Complex. Now if we went to war with these corporations, then I'd have a favorite!

most likely word war 2, it was the first modern war and they had some really interesting technology.
Actually, the First World War would be considered the first 'Modern' war, because no war before it had been fought like that (Trench Warfare, Tanks, Artillery, et cetera)..

I do have to acknowledge that no war can be a "favourite" in the likeable sense of the word, but: The second world war was the first modern (I.e not relying on heavy defenses alone but also a mobile attack force) war- massive buildup of technology, new tactics, etc. Interesting from both a historical and a military point of view.

Don't forget, the D-Day landings wouldn't have worked nearly as well without the American designed M4 Sherman- our own tanks had good armour, but manufacturing difficulties (We couldn't easily make the turret rings big enough for a 17 pdr gun) left them woefully undergunned. But at least Britain was still there as a springboard for the Western offensive; without which the Soviets would have had a much harder time.

Yes, well, I'll keep the name as a test to see if anyone is actually reading what I posted. Eh, all the new technology actually, in my opinion, took away from alot of the tactics, now the tactics are pretty much "Run in and shoot everything" or for major wars, "Press the big red button to destroy the earth"

I don't have a favorite war per se, but I do have favorite periods of wartime. I love the history involving the Sengoku period in Japan and the Three Kingdoms period in China. I actually took an Asian history class for my humanties credit just to learn more about them.

Would it have been preferable for the those civilians to have been killed by gunfire or suicide during a lengthy and destructive resistance?

People were going to die either way. We just picked the way that would kill the fewest.
