Not counting pokemon as a kid, I never watched anime till my last year of high school, so I was able to jump right in and understand the depth to the characters and such.

That said my first was Love Hina (which was... okay)
Followed by School Rumble (WHICH WAS TOTALLY EPICLY AWESOME AND IS STILL MY FAV)

Actually I can't remember exactly what was my first, I kinda just started to watch like 15 different animes at once since I kept finding stuff I liked :p

Dragonball Z. I understood it perfectly fine when it first came out on Cartoon Network. I was around 6-7. You people can't understand it? S-s-s-s-s-shame on you!

Guess I'll have to join other people and go with Salior Moon. At age 6, I had no idea what Gundam Wing was about.

Wello, as someone who grew up in the 90's rather unsurprisingly my 1st anime was Akira. I was 14 I beleive in 1992 (I remember because I was just too young to buy it legally).
After that was 3x3 eyes, Urotsukidoji, Patlabor, Battle Angel Alita, Appleseed, GITS. Soon after GITS I realised that most of the rest of anime was crap and stopped. Now I can't stomach any of it.

we even tried and abridged series but in the end we scrapped it because of compressing issues and now we just laugh at the idea of defiling that great show

I'm looking at all these posts and I feel old as hell. I remember my first "anime" was Robotech. When I was in elementary school I'd stay home and watch the episodes that came on in the morning and then have to run like hell the half mile to my school to make it on time. This was back when parents actually let their kids walk to school by themselves.

Tekkaman! ahh I remember like it was yesterday, 1993 it aired early from 7:30am to 8:00am so I had to watch it in my mom's car with a portable TV on the way to school.

It was in spanish, and IT WAS AWESOME!, ahh good times! ^_____^

Still I couldn't figure out how in the hell I was able to watch it... that TV was the size of a large VCR used 8 D batteries and had a 3'' black and white screen.

DBZ when I was in Primary School mate. Back when it was 'THE' cool thing of the time, and how many friends you had depended on how much you knew about DBZ...needless to say, I was the most popular kid in ze world....if only for the length of the fad.
It was a fad? Dammit...

Robotech was my first anime. Once it and DBZ came into my life I was not the same child.
Yeah, DBZ was a real fad here in Manchester. All the kids knew of it and went crazy for it. The fad lasted about half a year, and I'm pretty sure something else that was considered cool came and replaced it....Like Beyblades or whatever. I still continued to watch DBZ through the Cell and Buu sagas , just out of interest. And then we kind of grew apart...sad story really :(

Well, the first anime I watched to completion, in my current cycle, (For some reason, I tend to go on these weird cycles of stuff) Would actually be, and I'm kind of embarrassed to admit this, but, um...

To Love Ru.

Yeah, you heard me.

I immediately followed it up with Neon Genesis Evangelion, so, it's cool.

Edit:

Actually, the very first anime I can remember watching, waaaaaaay back in the day, when I was but a young lad, would still be Neon Genesis Evangelion. But I didn't understand any of it, and it gave me nightmares for weeks.
