Your First Job

So, on Sunday I turned in my resume for a position as a bookmaker. Now, a bookmaker does not make books in the sense of binding the pages together and whatnot. That is a bookbinder. Now that we've got that cleared up, I can continue with what I was saying. A bookmaker, or bookie as some people call it, works in the sports betting business. Those of you in the US are probably saying, "But sports betting is illegal!" Well, Billy, it is. But not where I live. 100% legal, therefore it's 100% legitimate and so on and so forth. Before you ask, I decided to get a job in this particular business because..well, because my only other options were call centers. Who wants to work at a call center? Nobody, that's who. Also, my uncle is best friends with two guys who work in sports betting, so I had connections. As we all know, it's preferable to know people in the business. On top of that, if I'm not mistaken, football season is coming up(NFL not soccer), and I know people back home looove betting on football. So, with all that, my uncle and I decided it would be best for me to get a job as a bookmaker. Oh, and my job interview is tomorrow. That's right, kiddos. If the interview goes good, my first job will be that of a bookie. No, I won't be working under a hard-hitting, ruthless gangster that feeds people to pigs like Brick Top. At least, I don't think so.

Now, I got a simple question for you guys. What was your first job like? Were there any horror stories? Was it anything like you thought it would be? Are you still working there? For the people who haven't entered the working world yet, what would you like your first job to be?

Hmm I dislike gambling.

OT: I taught kids to swim for my first job. Made sense since I am a swimmer.

I've only really had work experience so far.

I worked in CEX and I loved it to bits. We sat around talking about games, anime, films and we playtested consoles and occasionally served customers.

Sometimes when it was busy we would actually have to work but that was like a few times a day.

I'm applying for GAME in a few weeks.

I had my first job working as a caterer when I was 14. It was fun, and I got to drink with my boss all the time, and get paid for it since I was still on the clock the whole time. lol. I don't have many horror stories about it though. Mainly just weird ones from drunk people at the parties and receptions or whatever. I kinda wish I was working at a job like that these days. I'd hate it if I did it constantly until now, but I think it would be fun to go back to that kind of work fr a bit.

I worked at a GameStop. I was hired through a school work program at the age of 15. I was hired along with a very well endowed woman on the same day.

A week later the rather nice supervisor left for a better job, only to be replaced with a misogynistic sadist of a man who knew only the joy of causing grievance unto others. Soon I became less of a "worker" and more of a mannequin for the store. Me and the other lady were always kept front and center in the store to bring in more customers. Soon he began using us more or less as slaves while he sat in the back of the store watching TV or going on YouTube, doing none of his work and instead gave us his work load.

Almost every day there was something that man would do which would make me more and more angry with life. You can only take so much misogyny before you snap.

My first real job was actually as a bookbinder. Wages was good and I got to learn a lot of complicated machinery. No horror stories though and I got as many free books and magazines as I wanted.

I worked in a post office; pretty hectic job. It's actually amazing how much they have to do. Of course, I only sold stamps. But I had to sell heaps, since I did it during the weeks before Christmas.
I remember we had a little chart of how long it'd take for a parcel/letter to get from Australia to a certain country, so we could tell people how much earlier they should send their presents.

And I did a fair bit of babysitting and helping people set up their computers too, before that, if it counts.

I worked for a senior center for three months. The janitor let me sit outside most of the day and just hang around. It was awesome.

I'm not a gambler myself. I just decided on this particular job because my uncle knows people who work in it, football season is coming up, and I thought it would be interesting. You know, something different than what people would normally choose as a first job.

I worked at a GameStop. It's not as glorious job as you think.

Let me just put it out that the average span of someone working there is about 3 months before they snap like a Popsicle stick.
How long did you last before you snapped? If you did snap, that is.

Haha, when I told my friends about my potential job, they thought I was talking about bookbinding.

My dad pays me $20 to mow the lawn every time it needs it. Not bad for a 15 year old.

My first job was as a dishwasher and I quit after about a year. Burned myself with water and occasionally cut myself on hidden sharp things but that was about it.
