Up until about 5th grade I listened exclusively to Christian rock music. Then a friend gave me Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory. And that opened me up to basically everything else I listen to now
No offense, but... ew...
None taken, everyone has different tastes. I am curious as to what about it you don't like. Is it simply the religious aspect? Or taking religion out of the equation, is the music itself distasteful?

I understand if the religion is a insurmountable hurdle, it can be very strong and a little overbearing, but it's not all that way.
I just dislike the inherent "down with the kids" element in it. Plus I do feel that religion is being a little overbearing and I'm not sure I'd like that sort of person that feels the need to make every aspect of their interests about God. Overall, it comes off very cloying to me.

I am an atheist, but I respect the traditional and cultural value of Religion. As such, I like that certain cultures and religions have traditional music, but Christian Rock isn't that. It's some strange attempt to draw young people into religion by having it masquerade as something else entirely. Plus there's always the "it's just as good, it's like X without the fun" element.

Soulja boi.

Because, although I can't remember the exact point that I turned away from rap, and towards these "rock" and "metal" things that Tony hawks games had been telling me about, and I think it was actually much earlier, he illustrates perfectly the point at which I thought "That's it, evacuate rap boat to the good ship metal, I repeat, the rap boat is officially sinking faster than an x factor winner's career after their contract is up, evacuate to good ship metal".

Based upon what I've been listening to recently, The likes of Heart, Blondie, Debbie Harry, Pat Benatar and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts I'd say it'd be One Way Or Another by Blondie.
until about 5 years ago or so I didn't really listen to music at all... just the radio when it was on or something then I started to develop a taste in music thats started with rock and i guess I'd say that all started with Queen.

I don't think I ever felt the "down with the kids" element you're talking about. Could you explain that briefly?

And the overbearing aspect is one of the things that eventually drove me away from all but a few of the artists I used to listen to on a regular basis. The artists that I held on to were the ones that didn't reference God every 3rd word. There was a little more variety to their music and lyrics, which is why I feel they stood out.

But I have definitely heard the comparisons to pop music artists on numerous occasions and most of the time, I agree with them. For example, MXPX is basically Green Day, except I wouldn't consider MXPX's lyrics as "edgy" as Green Day (for what that's worth) and MXPX really doesn't mention God very often at all, part of the reason I still listen to them.

Now that I think of it, it must've been Through the fire and the flames, by Dragonforce.

Saw the video on a music channel late at night once, and it seriously increased my interest in everything metal.

Well, I used to call myself a rock fan when all I listened to was Top 40 generic rock bands like Linkin Park and Nickelback, and then my father made me listen to this song.

I've been a Metallica fanatic ever since.

I have no idea. I've been listening to pretty much anything as long as I've been alive. My dad really liked Black Sabbath, The Who, The Ramones, and LZ, Rolling Stones. My mom liked lotsa pop music and weirdly enough some rap music (early 80's rap was pretty tame)

So that's what I liked until I hit the age where I made my own decisions, in which case I went with modern day equivalents...

I guess you could say Bad Religion's album No Control which i heard my brother listening to when I was 8 or 9 and it was new. Is what made me start seeking out my own favorites.

Hmmmmm.

I think the first dubstep I ever heard was...One Trick Pony by Deadmau5?
Then came Tarantula by Pendulum, which I still hold very dear to my heart.
Then one magical day, I told my friend about it and she pretty much said 'No, girl, you're doing it wrong.' And slipped me some Skrillex, which completely plastered my brain to the wall.

Long story short, I now prefer Dubstep more than sex.
You prefer dubstep more than sex to what?

Anyway, uh, I remember listening to Endless Sacrifice by Dream Theater, and being blown away by that, but that's a far cry from what I listen to now, so it's hard to say if that pushed me towards Animals as Leaders and Periphery or not.

Hm. "A Better Place, A Better Time" by Streetlight Manifesto. Ska punk rock is not my "main" genre, but that is one of the first songs I ever fell in love with.

It all started with "All the Small Things" by blink-182 and from there, I came to discover other greats like Linkin Park, Green Day, Sum 41, etc. etc.

Nothing really pushed me into Rock that I can really remember... probably Foo Fighters I think.

Radiohead pushed me into Electronic music of various kinds though.
