To be honest, pretty much none of the assignments mentioned here seem like bullshit to me. Sure, the timing, workload or grading are sometimes wrong, but that doesn't make the assignment itself bullshit. Most of these have a lot of educational value or can be used to judge how good you are at something.

Your classes don't have infinite time to teach you things, so sometimes one part of an assignment won't fit terribly well with another. For instance when you have to get academic references for a fairly trivial subject. Getting those references is good practice and that's what they want you to experience, but in the class there is no time to write something that actually requires them and you get to do something simpler instead.

I also don't like keeping logs, writing comments/explaining my work or creating mind maps. I can do fine without. But these things are good habits to get into and many people can benefit from learning how to do these. Also, you may not need to make a mind map now, but perhaps in the future when you run into harder problems than you did in school you will be thankful that you learned how to do it. Or not, people aren't all the same, but that doesn't make the assignment bullshit.

I can't really recall having to do any really stupid assignments (but that may just be because of memory). Sure, some weren't particularly useful for me, but they might have been for my classmates.

Holiday homework.

Just holiday homework in general, especially considering I should be doing it right now but instead I'm talking about it here.
This. Exactly this. Like I really SHOULD be doing right now.
Same boat here... we've been assigned mock Sats (1 hour per paper) to complete AND mark over the Easter holidays. Also maths homework, and an English assignment to rough and best draft.

I know how you feel. I had to do an extended essay - a 4000 word essay with all 'academic' sources on any topic I wanted. The problem is, the subject has to be so specific, no academic source will be able to help. Bleh...stupid IB.
Oh jesus, I'm doing THAT course, we just haven't started that bullshit yet.

But to the topic at hand, one of my teachers told us, that for homework, we were to watch the Big Bang Theory.
Now, I'm not trying to be offensive to the show or its fans, but I don't see the academic value of this unless I'm trying to learn how to write comedy.
Hahaha, thats how they drag you in. They try and make it seem fun but then BAM! CAS and EE all over the place. God help you if you take double humanities like I do.

Mine was a 250-300 word critial summary that turned out to be only worth 5% and the marking critera somehow was out of 100, I just don't see how 5% can be that important or take that much time to work out

Also same boat here! (we could make a fleet of them) I have been given 2 maths GCSE papers, 2 Biology, 1 Chemistry and 2 Physics to do and mark (though marking it is optional) and i also have revision for all the actual tests coming up =_= .
However i dont think it's BS, i can see why they'd want me to do it but its the holidays so i might do half of it.

Well, it technically wasn't an assignment but it was still extremely stupid.

It was during preschool (this was LONG time ago) and there was a school play. The story was about 2 trolls who fall in love (its as horrible as it sounds) and there is a scene were they have some troll sex on the floor. I had to play the part of one of the trolls......

But wait! It gets worse......the entire thing is actually shown in front of the people and doesn't just happen behind the tents or anything, and the teacher decided to cast another male student who was also my best friend into the part of the other troll instead of a female (even though that isn't what happened in the original story)......

What the fuck is wrong with people? How anyone be this fucking stupid?

I hope that ***** gets to burn once she dies.
Also this isn't BS , it's just freaking hilarious :')

My little sister had to write a page essay on Bonos' (From U2) Christianity. I told her to make it up because the book they had been given about Bono's life only had about 2 lines on his faith. I was fully prepared to write an essay for her about Bono, but it being the Story of Joan of Arc. (Bono was born in a small peasant village, one day, while at church, he heard a heavenly message and guitar solo, telling him to start a band, write a spiderman musical, and drive the English scum out of his country. etc.)
I'm really sorry she didn't do it, as the teacher apparently put hers up on the wall without looking at it, and never marked them. That would have led to the best detention in History.

I'm a freshman in college at the moment and I'm taking a technical writing class. I recently completed a 5 page research paper on cyber security that was required to be single-spaced, 1-inch margins, and 12 point font. If that wasn't enough, the sources had to be "academic" meaning they had to be articles out of scientific journals. This meant I couldn't just google search my information, I had to go to special websites and hope someone had written about something that was broad enough to help me understand the fucking subject.

So escapist, I want to know if you can possibly top this assignment on the bullshit meter

edit:

forgot to mention this is a 1 credit hour class and a lot of the paper had to do with the history of the subject, which these stupid academic articles don't fucking have.
That doesnt sound all that unreasonable if its a homework assignment, you seem to have a bigger problem with the way its laid out. Or did I get the wrong end of the stick o_O

I have a good one actually, in college (I was doing information technology support) and we had a bullshit subject that was basicly a space filler in the first semester. We had to invent a murder mystery game... from scratch. I mean wtf o_O how where the hell would you even begin D:

Go to the High Street and measure how long it took for the traffic lights to go from green, through to amber then red and then green again.

Well, right now I'm supposed to be redrawing a WWII mindmap I'd done in the lesson (History). I can't just hand in the one I've got because apparentally the branches need to be different colours to help me learn. I've a mind to not bother and just tell my history teacher to fuck off.

Well, I loved this, but today, for business class, we took a trip to a major chocolate factory, then went on a two hour shopping trip in a huge mall in downtown Toronto. There was an assignment, but the teacher said forget it. We had lunch, I bought a book, and then we went home. Utterly pointless, but very fun.

Well, this easy assignment went from easy to bullshit.

So, it is well known throughout my school that I like to write. When our history teacher assigned us to write a short story, I was done (with 15 pages) in a day. Everyone else barely wrote page over vacation. A girl friend of mine asked me to write hers, and because I can't say no to girls, I did it for her. Then a friend asked, and offered money, so I did his too. Today, we got back to school. In homeroom, the first friend told a few of her friends that I wrote hers for her. Moments after, I was being begged to write theirs, and being offered all sorts of things (money, sexual favors, you name it). As I said, I can't say no to girls, it's just not in my nature. Even as a kid, while my friends feared cooties, I treated girls like queens. With all these girls asking, I didn't want to seem like a dick and say no, so I told them all I'd think about it.

Then, when I got home, I had 27 Facebook messages from people begging me to write theirs. In total, if I wrote all of them, I would have obtained 360 dollars, 3 blowjobs, a handjob, and sex. Yeah. My school is pathetic.
you should have done it haha

If you need models, there's a load of sites where you can get user created ones free. But what sort of class are you doing that demands you do something so extravagant in such a short period of time?

some of you guys are making me feel better about my assignment in comparison ;)

This isn't so bad. It is college after all. I once did a a 19 page research paper on the native mound building peoples of the southern United States. Granted it was double-spaced and had a few pages for illustrations and references.

Yup. You have. Unless the science and the humanity are one and the same (Environment studies) Double sciences are such a *****. My friends who do chem and bio have to memorize so much stuff for the exam.

Most BS homework? The 20 page projects I got in World history last year that I was given maybe a week to do. Oh and any assignment that require me to fill in any personal info, no one wants to read that.

Most BS assignment the basic work for my Intro to Engineering class, projects taking 20% of total class time are about 2/3rds of the gradebook. The rest of the work? might as well be busy work for all it is worth.

I'm in college, and because stats apparently doesnt count towards the requirement math to take chemistry, I had to take college algebra this semester, aka the class that I took in middle school AND highschool. Every day, we have daily homework, and we turn in a sheet of paper with our name on it and any problems we didnt understand. Once they're all in, the teacher puts them all on the board and asks for volunteers to solve them, then goes to a list of people that had "claimed" that they could do the problem, with the punishment of a failed homework grade if you cant show that you know how to do it if called on.
In the entire semester, for a full 3 days per week course, I have only actually done the homework twice. I just write that I didnt understand some hard one that I'm sure no-one got, and hand it in. I have only been caught once.
I have an A in the course.
