These are actually two characters (Although my hate for them is equal) from Stephen King's 'Cell'. Anyone who has read the book probably knows who I mean by now but if you don't...

The two 'normals' that kill Alice. It's bad enough that they kill her, but the reason why (The group has a squabble with the two idiots at some point) and how they kill her (launching a brick towards her head from a moving car) just make it all the worse. 'Cell' is my favorite Stephen King book and, quite frankly, he nailed the character development perfectly in it by making me care for the death of a fictional character and by making me despise two fictional characters.

Why?

Yes, noted. I also would point out again your woeful misunderstanding of the character, the episodes and the movie.
Yeah, I refuse to take "I just don't get it" as a an explanation.

I hate the "wife". You know, the one from numerous films and TV shows whos sole reason for existing is to stand in the way of the protagonist, ***** and moan about mundane matters and flip her shit all the time. I just want the protagonist to slap some sense into them, but that rarely happens as the counterpart to this character is the husband that tip-toes around doing everything they can to make the wife happy, always falling short of her unreasonable demands.

He is just such a fucking twat. He calls Inara a whore all the time, yet he has the nerve to get upset and depressed when she calls him the inexcusable term "petty thief".

He gets angry at Simon when he tries to bring his sister on board Serenity for the first time because "it endangered the crew" even though he was willing to try and provide transportation to him while smuggling illegal goods, not really caring if HE endangered HIM.

Also let's not forgot him telling Simon that he wouldn't leave without him before proceeding to do just that when he gets kidnapped, and I don't care if Book was injured, their doctor got kidnapped and instead of going after Simon so that he could, you know, treat her, he decided to just take off and...what was the brilliant Captain's plan again? Oh that's right, he didn't have one, just run up to an Alliance medical station without knowing that Book was an ex-operative and had the papers that would allow them to get in.

And I wish he would make up his fucking mind on what he considers everyone else because from episode to episode he bops from considering them "guests on his ship" to "his crew" depending on if he's supposed to be having an emotional moment with them or yelling at them (which in hindsight he does a LOT). Heck, I almost lost it when the rest of the crew went after him, one of them saying "He'd do the same for us," because the only time I remember him going to save one of them is the aforementioned Simon moment, and he took his sweet fucking time with that one, deciding to wait till the last fucking second and then magically knowing EXACTLY WHERE SIMON WAS SOMEHOW. If he knew where he was, how come he didn't get him when Book was hurt and needed a doctor?

Also in the movie he royally blows up at Simon for never telling him that River was unstable, despite the fact that in the last episode of the series she was playing around with a LOADED GUN. And while I'm talking about it he really pissed me off in the movie, it felt like he was just walking around looking for different people to shout at for half of it but the moment when he more or less said to the crew "do everything I tell you to do, desecrate some corpses, do things in half the time it should realistically take and if you complain I'll shoot you," is where I realized that I had grown to truly fucking hate him. And let's not forget "Either come with me to the heart of Reaver territory or get off here...on a dead planet in a bombed out settlement." Oh and why did he want to go to Miranda? Did he know that he would find a deep dark Alliance secret? NO! He just wanted to "get some closure." FUCK! HIM! He is a complete and utter asshole, Christ, I liked JAYNE more than I liked him, mainly because yeah Jayne was an asshole, but he and everyone around him didn't pretend that he wasn't.
Hmmm. I have some counters.

1. Errrm, yeah. I kind of agree. That was pretty aholish of him to do.

2. If I remember correctly, Mal was planning on smuggling the goods BEFORE they picked up the guests. Now, when the crew figures out that there's an Alliance agent on board, he suspects Simon, because he looks so obviously out of place with the rest of them (Clean, sophisticated, etc.). I don't think he was angry at Simon putting the crew in danger, so much as he was angry that there was an Alliance spy on board that could get his crew into huge trouble (Even though he was ultimately wrong and Simon was actually an Alliance fugitive).

3. I don't remember him telling Simon that he wouldn't leave without him. However, when Book was injured, it was fatal. They didn't know where Simon had gone, and didn't have much time to find him. So, Mal took a chance and went to the Alliance medical place, because despite knowing that they probably wouldn't treat him, it was Book's best chance. And Mal didn't have a plan, because, y'know, he wasn't expecting Book to get shot.

4. I don't recall that either. Yeah, he yells. People do that when they're angry or scared. And exactly how many times did someone get kidnapped in the series run? Because I only remember ONE TIME, with Simon. And during the war, he went back for his men, as was shown in a flashback. I don't think that Mal was taking his time, so much as GETTING BOOK TREATED. And knowing where Simon was? That's the WRITING, not the CHARACTER. Besides, it had been hours after Simon had gone missing. It isn't too much of a stretch to say that they were looking for him after they got Book medical attention.

5. Why would Simon tell him that River was unstable? She hadn't exhibited violent behavior before that point, and holding a loaded gun doesn't make someone unstable. That moment where he tells the crew what to do or else was RIGHT AFTER HE SAW HIS FRIEND AND A BUNCH OF INNOCENT PEOPLE KILLED FOR NO GOOD REASON. He was PISSED. He wanted REVENGE. Yes, he should have been nicer about it, but at that moment, I think it's understandable. He went to Miranda because he knew that there would be SOMETHING that the Alliance didn't want people to know. He knew THAT because of logical deduction (I.e. the Alliance sending an operative after River, and River telling them about Miranda, information that she could have only gotten FROM being in an Alliance facility.) To sum up your final point, I don't think that the crew is pretending that he's not an ahole. It's that they genuinely DON'T THINK THAT HE IS. I think that's just you.

TL:DR; Read the post. I'm not making a summery for people to look at after I just typed up that extremely long explanation of why I disagree.

Doesn't actually apply, but made me think of this.

So, in general, ever noticed how you tend to hate minor villains with a burning passion and want them to die slowly and painfully, whereas major villains are just awesome?

1. Ok

2. I'm more angry that he decided to take on passengers while smuggling illegal goods, yet despite him constantly yelling at Simon for putting everyone else in danger, no one EVER calls him out on being willing to put three potentially innocent people in danger.

3. Yeah well, he did. How about the plan "go get Simon back" he clearly didn't have any trouble finding him in the ending

4. Again, he did. Yeah, which is why I'm trying to figure out where exactly his crew got the BS notion of "he'd do the same for us" Writing and characters tend to go rather close together.

5. You do know that River has had more than a few "out there" moments right? Although I suppose that this can also be chalked up to bad writing because I'm pretty sure that "super soldier River" and that pass out word wasn't something planned for the series. Still doesn't make me like him any more. And he BLACKMAILED his crew into charging right into the middle of Reaper territory, risking all of them getting quite literally raped to death because he was mad and just wanted to hurt the Alliance. He threatened to FUCKING KILL THEM! He treated them like they were his fucking servents/slaves! I'm supposed to think that he's the good guy? That he's better than the Alliance? That I'm supposed to be on his side?...no...just no. What if things had gone wrong? What if every last member of his crew had gotten caught and God knows what happened to them because of what the Reavers did to them? Well, it's ok, Mal's the good guy, so he made the right decision and most of his crew lived and the only one that died died quickly...oi.

EDIT: Oh, and now that I think about it, how come when one of his old war buddies was holding Kaylee at gunpoint how come he didn't just say "oh BTW, we're not actually handing you over, we're going to blackmail them into leaving," no no no, just shoot and kill the guy you're trying to protect.

This ************ right here is one of the few who has made the list of fictional characters i wish to see die in the most violent and horrific manner imaginable. If you know who he is, you know exactly what he's done to earn that place on my list.

To those that don't? Well, let's just say Karma needs to get around to paying him a visit sometime soon and that he'll be the reason you won't think of the twilight novel or the phenomena when you hear the word "Eclipse" from now on.
Griffith is intentionally supposed to be hated, though. He's a great character who serves as a motivation and as a foil to Guts. I think this list is supposed to be for characters that you're not supposed to hate in the context of the story.

Given Joffrey and Cersei from SOIAF got mentions in this thread, i think it's safe to say the list is meant to include characters you're meant to despise in the story. But, in the case it isn't allow me to add these guys to the list:

Hope
Vanille
Nowe
The Starchild
and of course, my sitcom arch-nemesis:
VAAAAAAAAAAANNNN!!!!!

For me it would be Shinn Asuka from Gundam Seed Destiny. He's such an irrational, whiny, and really not very bright little shit, and he totally drags down what could have been a decent series.

I agree 100%, she's the 1st character in that whole show that I would love to see get eaten.
It annoys me that the good characters seem to die yet Andrea, the ***** that she is, always manages to survive. I wish that they would just kill her already.
But if she dies, who will be stupid enough to have a relationship with Merle?

I think a sheep would be more personable, a better actor and far smarter than her. And seems right up Merle's ally! :p
The only response to that I can think of would be to compare her to a sheep, but I respect sheep too much. Well played.

For me it's Cersei Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire. God damn I have never wanted to reach into a book and strangle someone before. Also her son Joffrey, he is a horrible git and that's putting it mildly.
With the exception of Tyrion, pretty much everyone with that bloodline counts. Jamie is at least trying to be less of a prick, but it will take a lot to make up for what he has done.

Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. I mean, his dad wasn't exactly great, but Luke whines like a small dog stuck in a locked room. He doesn't seem to fit my view of a man capable of saving the galaxy. Han Solo, on the other hand...

In fact, extend this to the Jedi in general. A bunch of peacekeeping assholes who'll say "we're the guardians of peace and justice" in the same breath as they slice the head off a bounty hunter with his son watching. That, and they're /too/ good. I always get turned off by characters that never deviate from their goodness, never get tempted. Moral greyness is narrative greatness, say I.

Awesome.

My vote would have to be for half the cast of True Blood. No wait. By the time Season 5 gets around, the entire cast of True Blood who isn't Eric. Yeah, that seems about right.

Awesome, considering the fact that Harrison Ford HATES the Han Solo character.

My most hated character has to be Ali Al-Saachez from Gundam 00.

Plot spoilers for anyone who cares
Ali Al-Saachez is one of those characters that you just have to hate, he was personally responsible for a lot of the deaths of main characters toward the end of the first season. (including the original Lock On, my favorite character in the series) And by the end of the second I can't think of a single character that wouldn't have a grudge against him. And for the record, I 'm still hoping to find an animated GIF of him getting shot in the head over and over again

In terms of characters your are supposed to hate that goes to Dr. Angus Bumby from Alice: Madness Returns.

In terms of characters that are just flat out annoying: Most of the cast from Final Fantasy 9!
