i wouldnt say Disturbed has brought metal back into mainstream considering their under-rated and not as popular as say Slipknot who have been bringing it back
im not a huge fan of slipknot but i have to say their bringing the influance back again

i dont like all this "nu-metal" shit either, its js low vocals shouting too much and not singing, basically js shit...

steel panther are also bringing metal back :D but 80's metal which is better than anything (yes im a glam head!!)

Metallica are timeless metal and basically set the bar for every metal band but they've gone abit down hill these days like..which is a shame (N)

I had no idea. Good to know. I'll be listening to some of Wagner's pieces now.

I love metal. Especially stainless steel. That stuff is so easy to cook breakfast with. Though I have a soft spot for titanium, as ironic as that sounds.
What about nickel? Nobody ever mentions nickel, yet it's the metal that makes up most of the coinage in our currency.

I don't ever remember liking it and I doubt I ever will. But my taste in music includes the old Sonic games soundtrack, so it's a bid of an invalid opinion.
How so? the old Sonic games had kick-ass music. I love the generic boss battle ditty.

I honestly can't stand metal at all. To me, it's often a great example of artists with some actual musical talent who decide instead to make speaker-mud. I have yet to find a metal band that I actually like, and I've gone through all the decades trying to find something that piques my interest. It frankly just bothers me, Disturbed especially.

[sub]Although Disturbed and Halo is a winning combination in my book, not sure why but it's the truth[/sub]
i agree with u completely except for the musical talent part i think that these people are just drunk, emotional, f@#$wads who should go to school and get at least half an education or they could just live in an asylum wearing nothing but a straight-jacket for the rest of their useless, dark, and pathetic lives!

i can not say this in any other way whatsoever

Metal's the same as everything else in music: It's great in some instances, crap in others, and just plain "what the hell?" in others.

I personally enjoy metal because of the dark, heavy riffs, driving basslines, crazy-ass drumming, and depending on the song the vocals can be screaming awesome, growling greatness, or just normal, melodic singing that keeps it amazing.

My two nitpicks: not enough good singers, too many wanky guitar solos.

Classical music and metal are a lot more linked than most people think and so are the normal listeners. The biggest difference in normal classical fans to metal fans is their age group, that being said I really do need to flesh out my classical music collection it is looking worryingly sparse but I always get distracted by some other type of music before I get to it. Though the fact I did not own any rainbow or uriah heep albums was a crazy mistake in the first place, maybe I will get around to it now.

I like metal, but certainly not unconditionally. If it's just power chords and blast beats I just get bored with it. It's really dissapointing to hear those bands, because you know people are going to think that they're representative of the genre.
It's a genre which people seem to be eager to include their bands in, convincing themselves they're listening to metal. Which is odd, because I'm pretty sure listening to metal doesn't make you a cooler person. Guess it's easy to get a little confused, though. Metal has an absurd amount of sub genres.

Still... Calling Linkin Park metal is beyond genre confusion.

Guess I'll have to listen to a lot more than just the occasional Beethoven or Mozart piece. I've been meaning to listen to Dvorak anyway (on an uncle's suggestion), and I've always wanted to hear what Bach has to offer.

Metal takes a lot of skill and practice to achieve a good sound, more than most genres of music. It requires talent and dedication to be a successful metal band. Even the screaming and growling from the genres I assume you hate require hard work and talent. If you don't like metal, just say so, but don't go around dissing an entire genre of musicians just because you're not fond of the music.

While there is a lot of genre confusion I am not sure you can say Linkin Park is not metal. It seems to fit nicely into the nu-metal mould (though it is a little to loose a mould and does have a lot of bands lumped in for no good reason) witch has a logical progression from the rap metal styles of bands like Rage against the Machine. However defining what is metal and what is not is a tricky business. I have been listening to a lot of the 70s stuff and the line where it went from hard rock to metal is really hard to place. Sabbath put out what is certainly a metal album with Ronnie Dio in 1980 but before that it is hard to place it all.

If I were one of those people who didn't understand that people are only stating their opinions, not saying their opinion is fact, I would be smashing my head against my desk right now. That is to say, I'm a Metalhead, and I'm dissapointed by the things many of you have said. That includes the creator of this thread. Metal being mainstream isn't a good thing, and Disturbed is not a good Metal band, they are average.

However, thsi one here is right, metal takes way more talent than you'd think, it's some of the most skillfullly composed genres, not to mention a great many metal-musicians are far more intelligent than the bashers of metal, and most people for that matter. Example:look up Dee Snider.

I said it once and I'll it again: Metal, at least my generation, got a lot of people into playing an instrument; and not only that, it actually inspired them to get really good.
