This is a purely American discussion, isn't it? In Europe this wouldn't be a question. Chronicles of Riddic had zombies with penises. They had to change the version of the game for the US market.

Its all about when and where.

Theres nudity in Mass Effect and it works.

Now if there was a big fuck off erect penis in Viva Pinata that would be wrong...

Youd hit the pinatas with it I guess.

Here is the deal: I've been both a gamer and a born-again Christian since I was 5. I've never liked the GTA series, because you play the role of a criminal thug in each game, doing the kinds of things a criminal would do, but I do enjoy many shooters and RPGs with realistic violence. I'm ok with this because death and killing are subjects that can be explored in the light of "heroism" (think soldiers and police officers); however, I have never liked the idea of sex and nudity in games: I think it's lame and a form of "cheap thrills", with nothing heroic or praiseworthy about it. (I feel the same way about sex scenes in R-rated movies: they're cheap and unnecessary. If I wanted to get off watching sex, I'd watch a porno.)

Now, I am married, and I love and respect my wife. She is willing to let me continue to play violent games, as long as I keep them out of the sight of our children. (I whole-heartedly agree.) However, understandably, she is not ok with games that have nudity and sex scenes, and slow to approve of a game with skimply clothed girls. The trend today seems to be that every game with an adult audience is going to have these elements in it. That means that the gaming industry is going to lose me, a die-hard gamer of over 25 years, as a customer. I suspect that there are many others like me out there.

Keep nudity and sex in porn games and games like GTA, and leave it out of mainstream gaming.

Nudity in gaming doesn't bother me. Games replicate life, and in making characters as realistic as possible for total immersion in the gaming experience, if the character takes their armour/costume off for whatever reason, well, they're nude.

I don't have kids, but I am one who believes kids should be taught that the human body isn't anything to be ashamed of. I mean really, come on. Everybody has one, and sometimes it doesn't have clothes on it. What's the big deal? Demystify the nude condition. Don't make such a bloody fuss over it all and maybe people will start to put things into perspective.

I don't really see the problem because if there is nothing wrong with shooting someones head of in a game, then why would there be something wrong with nudity.

It depends on what's going on in the story.

For example, in Mass Effect, you could talk to various members of the crew and be able to have sex with them towards the end. That is the sort of thing that Nudity should be allowed in.

MORE!

As long as it's in a proper context like Mass Effect...

The Videogame Industry should be more classy about these things since they're so new at it.

I avoid games with nudity as a general rule because I don't find it at all necessary in order to enjoy my games. Since the presence of nudity in a game would likely take me out of the experience rather than immerse me further (because most game companies have no class, and thus I would probably be repulsed or annoyed by its appearance), I'm of the opinion nudity should appear rarely or not at all.

Sure, it'd maybe be alright if somebody approached video game nudity with maturity, but it'd also be nice if hades froze over.

I welcome it aslong as the games age restriction is appropriate, and parents are monitoring what their children are playing.

I have disdain for people who use women as sex objects to be gawked at by slack jawed males. You know unreasonably huge breasts and they bounce like hell (I've already expressed my view on this) I just think it is very degrading.

However if done TASTEFULLY one can argue that nudity empowers her and that she is a sort of sexual concerer. Because there was a time when sex was a beautiful act between two people who love each other. Not some carnal lustful violent act between two impossibly beautiful people violently screwing against a wall.

Seriously though just plain sex really shouldn't be enough to offend anyone, I mean in terms of violence games are just barely past the point where you can rip someone's heart out and eat it... oh yeah the Darkness. Never mind.
If we've allowed violence I don't see an issue with sex just as long as it's tasteful and doesn't objectify the people involved. Seriously I've watched a lot of arthouse and independant and foreign films, the women in those movies get their gear off but no one can call the director sexist because it's done in a very tasteful artistic way, a very mature and beautiful empowering way. A bold way. In games Mass Effect is the closest example I can think of.
Games just need to approach nudity a little more like that rather then like a horny mouth breathing fourteen year old who has the house to himself all day and found all of daddy's naughty magazines.

If its done tastefully and maturely i say yes, and there should be more If games are going to evolve as a medium and artform they need to become more adult (by that i mean mature) and sex/relationships a strong scource of that. Seriously spend less time copypasting the half life engine for another dull fps and start exploring real story/plot mechanics.

It's alright...as long as it's female. Rockstar, I'm talking to you with your full frontal nude male scene in TLAD DLC content for GTA 4.

I think there is a problem in the fact that nudity and sex in games is viewed as more controversial than, say, extreme levels of violence and gore. I believe that nudity and sex in all types of media is only a problem for kids if it's portrayed in what i choose to call a "non-realistic manner", i.e the way it almost always is in all types of media.

Lets face it, a significant part of the gamer community are teens, and teens are by nature curious about sex, probably moreso than other age groups. Why should game developers avoid something that many of the consumers are interested in? If the subject wasn't so very taboo, maybe games could be productive in developing a healthy attitude towards sex. I'm not saying this is a realistic prediction, but it would be a nice development.

Okay, should nudity and sex be allowed in games? Sure, why not? Both are a large part of the Human condition and by far the latter (usually under the guise of "love," but more often then not it's lust) is probably the single most powerful driving force of any species as it balances out our most basic needs (shelter, and food being just before "continuing the genetic line.")

Noticed plenty of comments that have the general line of thought "Nudity is fine, but sex is right out." Now, let's take a step back and look over things in an objective, metatopic. Sex and Violence can be put next to each other as being more or less the same thing (Sex is "constructive" human interaction, violence is "destructive" human interaction. To allow nudity without sex would be akin to saying "I want violence, but I don't want any killing." Now, I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Games like Mario where enemies go "poof" when you hit them, or games like Street Fighter where opponents just lick their wounds after you do something that would sever their spinal column, hey, that's fine, and it's entertaining. But, every once in awhile you want to make someone dead. A low key, maybe a blood splatter dead, but they're most certainly dead, Something along the lines of, say, Halo, where there's plenty of violence and death, but, in the end, not much happens. This would be like adding I guess softcore sex to a game. You see the two characters (male and female, female and female, male and male, or even larger groups thereof) getting intimate and close, maybe some gyration and some moans, but, in the end, it's about as graphic as a Bond picture. Then there's the ultra graphic. You've played these games, like Doom 3 or Soldier of Fortune. You blast someone's cranium and you see the brainmatter gush forth in chunks, painting the walls in crimson. Taking that to the world of Sex, it'd be a graphic piece, cameras shoved right into the moment of penetration, whips and handcuffs and non-certified uses of farm equipment and groceries. Heavy stuff that, hell, I'm not sure I'm ready to view.

But, the thing is, there are levels to things, just like there's levels of violence. You have your basic, low end things, your Marios and what not, your midline violence like Halo (which, honestly, is about an upper "Teen" if that), and then you've got your gorefests. Sex could easily be rated as such. Things aren't all the same, and parents do need to take an active role in, well, parenting.

Ok, getting really bored of reading "yuh itz ok as long as it?s tasteful"
First of all, what is this? You're supposed to be a game forum and lets face it most people who play games are teenagers that are not having any sex. Don't pretend to me that you could only possibly appreciate nudity if it was artistic or tasteful- I'm willing to bet most of you don't give a toss about that really.

Also a question: Who here has ever played a game that was spoilt for them because it had nudity in it? Not just a game that was rubbish and had nudity in but one that was rubbish because of the nudity?

I know I haven't but thats because you go into a game with expectations based on word of mouth, reviews, and content ratings the same as you do for films and so if I play an 18 rated game or see an 18 rated film I am expecting bloody violence and/or nudity. In my mind any possible arguments agaisnt having nudity in games is completely knocked down by the fact that horrific, interactive violence is common place. Imagine the huge controversy if a game had situation where you could graphically rape somebody, yet in condemnded two you can beat people to death with a baby.

Everyone needs to stop taking games so seriously, just because there's nudity doesn't mean its either for art or for pervy 14 year olds to have a crafty hand-shandy, I think it would have been hilarious if masterchief had downloaded some kind of topless mod to download to Cortanna.

Oh and I don't want to hear about how I can speak for myself about being a teenager who has no sex- I do alright for myself but we all know the horrible truth about the games market so don't be pedantic

We gamers are constantly trying to make our form of entertainment as accepted by the general population as other media formats. Then why shouldn't games be allowed to have all the content that we encounter in movies, literature or graphic art? A "teen comedy" might get a PG-13 rating for bare breasts, but a topless woman in a game would lead to at least an M rating. It will probably take some time for the games industry to be treated on equal terms with "old media", but first we should become more accepting and mature ourselves.
