The Slayer of Kings replica sword (Archeon's one) that I have on my wall, give me a day or two to make a proper whetstone and I am in business.

Gladius and riot shield. shield can keep em back and gladius is a 1 handed murder machine. heavy enough to broad side flatten a skull(for when it starts to dull) and short enough to keep your attacks fast with little to no training. having no training vastly lowers the usefulness of a kitana. getting a long skinny blade stuck is very easy, keeping it moving takes a master.

Depends on the nature of the apocalypse. If it's blood-transmitted infection, then I obviously want to avoid breaking skin/cutting or doing anything that causes bleeding.

Towards that end, I'm pretty confident in my abilities with a staff/polearm, so just strap a rechargeable tazer to the end of it and I'm good to go.

Otherwise, give me a long crowbar. So useful. So durable. So portable.

There are some pretty solid suggestions already. Katana and lightsabers are definitely good pics but I prefer a lawnmower simply because of the final scene in Braindead. If you haven't seen that ridiculously awesome film then you really should. And while you revel in its B-movie splatter porn glory always remember - "Peter Jackson made this..."

According to my friend the best melee weapon is a crowbar, because it can do good damage, is practical in many situations (clearing debris, opening trunks, etc), lasts longer than other weapons (wooden bat, Katana, etc) and easy to maintain (simple grind polish would keep it usable).

Also, you need to be quite strong to cut someones head off with any blade, so as much as I'd like to use a sword, it probably wouldn't be practical (unless you weigh 200 pounds in muscle). I'd do well with an iron pole or pipe. I'm not strong enough to decapitate anyone, but I probably could deal a lethal amount of damage to a zombies head
