As for my melee weapon of choice, I'm going with a two pound sledge set on a three foot long handle. Powerful, and has good reach... Plus I probably already have one or two in the back of my car. (I am not a normal person.)

In all honesty, a mallet.

There is no more effective weapon than a mallet.

Bigger than a Hammer, so you don't get the risk of getting infected, faster and less of a windup than a bat, so you can get quick but lethal jabs in.

Oh yeah, and for all you people saying chainsaws, good luck with your new infected life. The worst weapon to use. I don't know what you saw in Texas Chainsaw Massacare, but those things aren't exactly as lethal as you'd think. Sure, scarey and dangerous- if you like cuts and scrapes- but against an undead bastard who no longer cares about pain, you're boned.

I guess I'd raid a museum for a morning star or failing that a generic mace. Bladed weapons go dull fast and can permanently lose their edge if you don't sharpen them often enough.

If I had a choice of fantasy weapons I'd go for a plasma or chainsword.

Well, you kinda have to think of what a melee weapon is for in this situation. Primarily it is for clearing a path to run away, not killing droves and droves of them. You'll want something that is easily able to knock them down and move on quickly from.

Swords are bad for this, swords break and wear down and get stuck. A titanium bat would probably be the best.

However, there simply is no better melee weapon in mythos than the Lightsabre.It will not break, it can easily knock down or even kill a zombie. And can be used for clearing a blocked path.

People, you forget that although blade weapon like the Katana is cool and deadly against zombie but you must remember that blood will get on it. The more blood on it, the more blunt it will get. Sure you can clean it with a cloth or pour liquid on it but would you have time to clean it against a horde? Well ok, even it had been cover in blood to the point it's too blunt to cut it maybe be handy as a metal stick?
As for my melee weapon, does a shild (police riot shield) count? A good defence is a good offence.

I myself would go with either a templar sword or a small broadsword. Spears would actually near perfect for this situation (sorry, no coolness factor though) because theyre used to kill someone and push them away from you, but only work in one direction (good in groups) but in all directions or inside, a bit unwieldy.

So yeah, Katanas are cool, but got to go with that double edged stabby power.

It was in a film magazine (Total Film). Someone question if it was possible in the film "Kill Bill" for the Bride to kill all the Crasy 88 at that time. A sword expert said no because of all the killing, the katana would of been cover in blood and become too blunt to cut the flesh. Unless she able to clean it while dealing the remaining Crazy 88 then it possible.
Also the game "Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad" make use of cleaning the katana if it had too much blood covering it.
