I hate christmas. I hate the entire damn thing, from the carols to the decorations, everything. I hate it almost as much as I hate the people who've abused the animals that are now in my care at work.
Look into the night sky. When I see stars I feel warm inside that humans have not messed up the trillions of other worlds out there. Star are like diamonds, so close for you reach them and far enough to escape human stupidity.
Think of yourself and see what you have. You have a family, friends, you've got a computer and internet, and the luxury to enjoy video games. Now think of the amount of people this year that have been laid off, people who die from hunger, simple illness, etc. Tolerate the annoyances Christmas, because it's a luxury many people don't have. Sorry to sound depressing, but people griping about the annoyances of Christmas tend to be a little bit spoiled (i.e. I know a kid that screamed, threw tantrums, etc. at his parents. Why? Because they got him a $300 Xbox 360 instead of a $2000 computer).
My reasons are a little more personal and come from real experiences, rather than just being about "stuff", and the annoyances caused by carols and people.
I have certainly not been "spoiled" at any point in my life. My family does not buy or give presents (nor do we accept them), and birthdays were a "small gift" affair. Also, my income is only slightly above the national abject poverty line. I do my job because I love it, not for the remuneration.
I would like to "get into the spirit" a little more, but as far as I can see, the "spirit" is about hypocrisy and greed.
Okay, then forget all of what I said. I'm sorry, I'm used to dealing with a LOT of people who feel "entitled" and subsequently have some of the stupidest concerns in life (half of them are in debt cause they buy shit they don't need with money they don't have).
I agree that the holiday spirit has been corrupted by greed, but perhaps then you should make a stand? I took a stand and have held on to it since high school: I try to never accept gifts. As my way of protest (as well as giving thanks to my life), I've never accepted a Christmas gift unless it's something a relative gave me that's cheap (i.e. clothing given by my aunt and uncle who don't understand what I'm doing).
I know other guys that never accept or give gifts on the 25th (they do the day before/after, or New Year's maybe) cause they feel like one day is as good as the next for giving thanks for their family. I know people who ask their folks what they got, and then turn around and donate it straight to charity. We're all against the greed and stupidity that Christmas brings, and you can be too.
PLUS, if you're really devious/vengeful, you can rub it in everyone's faces. Most workers will be cowed when you say you don't celebrate Christmas, because they don't want to offend (i.e.Hanukah, Kwanzaa, etc.). If you feel like it, say that you don't celebrate Christmas with gifts but rather by volunteering for charity/etc. It'll make them feel guilty for being so selfish, and they'll hate/love you for it (ironically enough, both things can happen). That's what I do when facing the abomination known as Christmas.
EDIT: I just saw that you said your family doesn't buy or give presents. Then rub it in their faces even more (again, if you're vengeful). Your main weapon to counter these annoyances should be guilt, for at no other time in the year do people feel more spoiled/entitled than the holiday season.
