I'd prob end up as a tech/comms guy or something, I'm far too weedy to warrant putting in the front lines, i'd be a liability up front.

... damn... why? Original answer: staff officer...

Anyway, depends on theatre/service:

Army: dedicated marksman
Navy: dunno... probably an aircraft carrier crewman, high-ranking NCO or something.
Airforce: ground-support pilot

*shrug*

i would like to be the marksman in a squad, high powered assault rifle with a scope. effective at a distance but not worthless when they get closer

CSAR. I want to ride in a helicopter, rescue people and still be prepared to kick ass when I have too.

cannon fodder Probably just a run-of-the-mill rifleman, since the I lack the necessary skills for any other role.

Traitor.

Dont get me wrong, im relatively patriotic. But i dont want to get shot by men with big, angry, high powered rifles at close range.

I would hand over all information i had available, at the time, and promise them more if they let me live, and give me a 1-way ticket out of the country.

Sorry guys. But my role is that of "he who joins the side he hopes will win". And if wars broken out, and were caught off guard, its most likely going to be the enemy side.

On the off chance that our side does start to win, i steal all information i can find and turn it over to the "good guys", and say i was playing the double agent all along.

Its part of being Lawfully Evil. Siding with whomever sets the laws and benefits me most!

Well, I've been trained as a Supply Squad Leader, so I guess I'd do that. You know, support the front line with food, supplies and the such. We also handle field mail and water drilling, if necessary. Man is that water driller cool. Kind of a ***** if you accidentally drop the drill 30 meters straight down a small hole =( But then again, I can just tell the squad to dig it up. I wouldn't, but I could. >=D

I'd be that guy just off camera who shouts, "Get to the chopper!" when required.

Seriously though, Id just keep my head down and listen to whoevers in charge - least that way I might have a chance of getting out alive.

For me, either Medic. I think it would feel amazing to preserve life in a time of death and destruction.
Did you consider the screaming, guts, blood, urine and feces that come with the job? Along with facing death more often than most actual soldiers (or rather, facing it up close) :S

OT: Pilot would be my first choice, sniper the second. I like being the support and I like working alone (working with a team, not in a team). I pilot jets in BF3 but I've given up on the sniper with the addition of sniper glint, it's just stupid how easy it is to be spotted and it makes it impossible to do anything other than lie prone in a position miles away from your targets so you can't get shot to bits the moment you click that fatal right button.

I'd be the Politician that is using the war to prop up his popularity with the view of taking power away from the Incumbent PM. this war is wrong man! everyone look at me saying this war is wrong on TV!

seriously, being the opposition to the party that took the country into war is the safest place for someone.

So I was playing Battlefield 3 with some friends, and i came to realise that the classes we played really reflected what our prefered job in a real war would be. One of them takes to the skies, the other supplies us with ammo, etc.

So anyway, You're thrown into a war... what role do you play?

For me, either Medic. I think it would feel amazing to preserve life in a time of death and destruction. I'd also do EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal). I like bombs alot, and I like the pressure, the whole "working in a deadly situation" kinda excites me.

So... you?
Join the military during a time of war and live your dream. As for my ideal role in war? Combat arms of some type. Something like mechanized infantry or cavalry scout. Bradley gunner and then later become "tank commander" of the Bradley fighting vehicle would be the most satisfying. I was a Bradley fighting vehicle mechanic in the American Army but also did combat things my last tour such as driving, gunning and dismount roles in MRAPS. I did one mission in a Bradley as a gunner when I filled in for a route security shift and loved the hell out of it. In video game world I played a lot of BF: Vietnam and Point of Existence mod in tanks as a mechanic class so I could auto repair my tank. I really enjoyed it, but it was far from realistic.

Why has no-one said: General? Or Fleet Commander? The higher you are up the ladder, the less shit can hit you. I play so many RTS games I would undoubtedly win... I mean, building a Castle in a strategic locations is still considered modern warfare, right?

Factory worker (because they're kinda vital), or Ideas guy (like Jasper Maskelyne)... If forced onto the front lines I would say tank regiment (but if they have depleted uranium rounds no thanks), maybe infantry then.
