So, am I the only one who's been seeing good comments consistently? Yeah, I see the bad ones, but usually it's only about 2-3:1

I once wrote a discurse analysis for my university based on communitcation patterns in gmx-news-comments.

Don't ever call this stuff useless. It is a gold mine for linguistics papers.

I sometimes get the same feeling reading these forums
Not nearly as often because its well regulated and largely lacking in malice, but the sheer level of banality astounds me sometimes. But then, I suppose it's not exactly meant to be revelatory stuff now is it?
Speaking from personal experience people get bored and write whatever pops into their minds. Most don't think what they're saying is especially important, that status is usually ascribed to it by others who either agree or take exception. I once commented on a song, lamenting how none of my friends liked it. it was a throwaway comment that I didn't expect to hear about ever again, but some dipshit took that as my believing I was better than my friends and, by extension, everyone else. I meant no such thing, but people just seem to like getting pissed off about nothing.
I agree, they are pointless, but what's the point in anything like that? What's the point in these forums? What do they accomplish, except to swallow up valuable time? Truth is, most things involving commenting on the web are pointless, but, if you just have to write whatever pops into your head, its better than being self-absorbed enough to register a twitter account.

Or maybe this is just me being bored and chatting shit online, God knows we all do it.

The only time I look at comments on youtube is when i need to know something about the video that isn't in the description. Someone has usually asked the question first and the thumbs up system brings the question and the answer to the top of the pile of bullshit.

Dude, I can agree with the part about the comments being full of trolls and FIRST Comment! idiots, but, as someone who posts on the youtoobs, I treasure my comments. I delete the garbage posts like spam and whatnot, but I love the comments, questions and chatter on my videos.

In fact, I kinda feed on it, I check my youtube comments page as religiously as some fanatics check their email.

Depends on what you're watching... For example now that I've been watching Frasier in order sometimes I go to the youtube posts to read some of the comments, which tend to be funny and amusing, even if I don't always agree with them.

It's like a written peanut gallery or MST2K XD

I can see the point of allowing comments, but due to the lack of quality moderation, then it's going to get piled on with tons of rubbish.

That's why I like communities like The Escapist - the forums are moderated in such a way it chases off the vast majority of worthless comments.

Depends on what videos you watch. At a 1/3-1/4 (what you're quoting) it still means there's a fair amount rubbish.
Most forums I've been a member in, the spam/rubbish rate is usually a fair bit lower than that.

All comments are pointless even here, its kinda like how modern media is nothing but lulz, if you want qaulity you shut up and read a book or something.

I've never really come across YouTube trolls, and I usually get some pretty good discussions out of commenting.

People need to know they're alive; as human irl interaction becomes more loaded, problematic and fractured, any form of attention is validation and proof of one's impact on some small of the world. The perceived value or lack thereof is irrelevant, merely to post is to have left one's mark.
These are exactly the truth :p
