YOU BETTER HAVE SEEN THE FIRST THREE.

/psychotic rage
First three? When did they make more than three? It starts with A New Hope and ends with Return of the Jedi, right? I'm sure I can't bring to mind any more than that.

OT: I've never seen all the Godfather movies. I was bored as hell by the first one, so I never bothered with the rest.

I do think everyone should see The Lost Boys at least once, though. Especially anyone, like me, who grew up in the eighties.

Eh, I've seen The Wizard of Oz performed on stage. I've never seen the Judy Garland film, though. Is that what you meant?

Which is another point - I think there are a few things everyone should see performed live at least once, or at least a few playwrights whose work you should have at least sampled live. Shakespeare, of course, everyone should have seen at least one or two performances of the Bard's work. And at least one Gilbert and Sullivan performance.

Watched? So long as they've read it, I don't think it matters if they've watched it.

I haven't seen any of the movies you mentioned, nor have I seen Godzilla, Starwars (Well one..), I've only seen one of the Lord of the Rings movies, I've never seen anything from Star Trek, M*A*S*H, Indiana Jones, Rambo, and it wasn't till last year that I had watched Forest Gump.

Several. I have a friend who, despite being both active and outgoing, had some sort of twisted childhood that prevented her from seeing most movies you expect kids to have seen. She isn't missing many of the TRUE essentials, but the list of normal movies she's never seen would be far too long to include. It's absolutely pointless to try to get her excited about movies by mentioning actor names too.

Last weekend I met someone who had never seen the Princess Bride. He defended his ignorance by mentioning that his roommate had never seen Star Wars.

*Friend of mine walks into the lounge freshman year*

Friend: "What are you guys watching? What is this?"

Us: "... you're kidding right?"

F: "No, what is this?"

U: "Princess Bride dude! You've never seen Princess Bride, are you serious?!"

F: "Never... Is that Andre the Giant?"

U: "...dude"

F: "This looks silly and stupid"

U: "THAT'S THE POINT"

No Star Wars, Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, Old Boy, Pulp Fiction, Clockwork Orange, Godfather 2 and 3, any Matrix, Kill Bill, Avatar, Borat, The Usual Suspects, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Citizen Kane...

The list just goes on. While I haven't watched any of these films I have extensive knowledge about things related to them. (Greedo shot first, Blue Pill - Red Pill, It was his sled, I'm your father, that kind of stuff and more)
Why not watch them? Seriously. They're all ridiculously good.

I still have yet to see Fight Club. I actually was all set to watch it at one point- I was at a friend's house after a dance. We were getting the DVD ready and had started to watch the movie... then it turned out I had to leave early >_> So I only ended up seeing the first 20 minutes or so. For anyone who's seen the whole movie, you feel my pain- without context the first 20 minutes of that movie are quite... interesting XDD For some reason I've just never had a chance at any point after that. It remains one of my must-see movies.

Also, I recently sat down with my girlfriend and had her watch Star Wars (the original trilogy), as she had never seen them before. She returned the favor by getting me to watch Alien. We cover each other's sci-fi misses =)

I have a friend who basically has no interest in movies whatsoever. You name a classic movie and you can bet he hasn't seen it.

Yea there was this one time that this guy decided that "modern cultural knowledge" was based entirely on seeing fight club. or whatever movie the person believes everybody MUST have seen. Last time I checked, not having ever seen or heard of "pulp fiction" has never come up until now. What I'm saying is, modern cultural knowledge is not influenced very much by movies.

Hah, all the time. I think being an anime fan leads you to a lot of people who ONLY watch anime. Which isn't a good thing. I always make a point of watching as much in the way of live action TV and films, provided it's something I'm interested in.

That said my friend on a scriptwriting course at university makes film related jokes all the time. Must drive him mad when I give him that dumbfounded look on my face while he has to explain 75% of them to me. ;D

I'm that person...my friends/co-workers are always surprised at what references or people I don't know.

This usually relates to TV, movies, celebrities, or major events in the news. Given that I don't watch much tv, it makes sense. I only found out who Justin Bieber was about a month ago for example, and still have yet to hear one of his songs knowingly.

I have not seen pulp fiction, and my friend keeps trolling me for it. From what she tells me about it it sounds good and I want to see it, but I always forget until she or something/someone else reminds me of the movie. It's a vicious cycle I tell you!!!

This is nothing. One of my friends claimed to be a nerd but had never written a computer program. So we forced him to learn C++.

As far as my movie culture, I just don't have the time. I watch between 0 and 1 movies/TV shows every year, so it is inevitable that I don't get all of the best ones. But I don't claim to be movie cultured, so it does not bother me.

I just had to make an account to add my opinion to this. Long time lurker :D

Anyways, being 16 and from a family that takes most movie ratings very seriously, I haven't seen most movies people would consider "required" in order to know anything. I have, however, seen Toy story, The Matix, Jurassic Park, LotR, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Forrest Gump. I've seen almost any PG-13 movie you can think of, that would be considered classic.

I have heard about fight club, pulp fiction, The Godfather, and most other classic films. I just have no interest in watching them :\

I just never got around to watching them and for the last few years I've been really busy, I probably will when I get some more free time.
