I think the parkour in mirrors edge HALF worked. So I was shocked when I saw gameplay of Dying light and I saw that they had copied the half that DIDN'T work. Dumbassess.

Great episode, I love seeing the piss taken out of Techland XD It's like they're a B-movie AAA studio; they're motto must be something akin to "Good artists may steal, but good artists still get paid!" ^^

Oh you silly people and your need for visible feet... Really, your "feet" (actually bottom of your bounding box) are a fixed distance below your viewpoint so it shouldn't be rocket science to figure out the point you land with. I find platforming actually easier in first person because I can judge distances in 3D space better and can turn the camera more easily. I've been doing first person platforming since Half Life, at some point I just had to figure it out.

I think I might be the only person I know who isn't tired of zombies in video games..... and I don't know why...
That being said, considering how much Dead Island and Riptide crashed on me and/or fucked up my save file, Dying Light being a more polished Dead Island with some bells and whistles added is perfectly fine with me.

Never played DeadIsland, most likely never will play DyingLight, but still enjoying a ZP review of a game on a wednesday evening :D
The FPS platformning is going fine for me in MetroidPrime. So nothing to say to that

Techland: CROSHAWWWWWWWW!!!

That is weird how they would hand the sequel off to a different company and then make a new game with a different name and not much else. Maybe they figured on reverse brand recognition striking if Dead Island wasn't well-received (no idea if it was).

captcha: my beating heart. valentines day a bit early perhaps, or did a zombie sneak up on me?

I'm getting mixed messages on what he thought of the game.

I've not played more than an hour's worth of Dead Island, though, so I don't have perspective.

I keep hearing "better than Dead Island" but I hated Dead Island, so... How much better, really?

In my headcannon, the reason why zombies/the undead moan is because they can't control their own hornyness and the next live person they sink their teeth into would "cure" their undead libidos... Too bad they aren't smart enough to just have a never-ending orgy with themselves, thus leaving the still-living out of it, but I digress...

Anyway, now I'm imagining Techland muttering to Deep Silver about how they're going to be making their own "Dead Island 2" (and calling it Dying Light: Slapshot) with blackjacks and hookers...

I kinda liked Dead Island, despite the flaws... but...

There's a different reason why this game should go on people's boycott lists. The developers patched the game, and have a DRM specifically to prevent modding(it bans you for modding), and issued DMCA takedowns against mods. Apparently removing the filmgrain filter was too much of a crime against their artistic vision or something.

So, as anti-consumer as they are, they're not getting my money.

"Because at that point, twatting the lurching dead about suddenly gives way to fleeing like Princess Diana from photojournalists, and often with roughly the same result."

Oh, I laughed. So not proud of myself, but I laughed.

Spiffing ZP episode, Yahtzee. Thanks.

So pretty much what everyone else has been saying about it: "Pretty much Dead Island...only a little better."

Yeah, file me in the category of gamers that are getting rather tired of the zombie game parade.

I'm the same. Right down to 'cutting my teeth' on first-person platforming with Half-Life.

I've never quite been able to appreciate the seething hatred Yahtzee and others have for first-person platforming. I can understand how it might be difficult, but for me it's always come naturally. I've always found it easier to judge my position in the three-dimensional space of a game when in first person, as opposed to third-person. I just find it easier to do complex jumping maneuvers when viewing the game world from my characters eyes.

The only trouble I come across is when a game features a piss-poor excuse for a 'parkour' system. One that, not unlike the system present in Dying Light, bugs out and fails to anticipate my intentions or simply fails to do what it's supposed to do.

Given that the vast majority of the game and it's content can (and should) be described as "It's like Dead Island but...", my suggestion would be to steer clear.

From a performance standpoint, Dying Light has none of the problems that plagued Dead Island and Riptide. That is to say, it doesn't crash, and it doesn't have a tendency to corrupt saves.

Gameplay wise, it's combat is roughly the same as Dead Island (Stamina, kicking, breakable weapons, elemental mods, etc), with some added stuff (Parkour and 3 different ability trees that level up from different things). Big main change is how zombies get more powerful at night time + the introduction of more powerful zombies that are as agile as the player. Basically the game gets more stealthy and dangerous during the night time.

tl dr: More polished Dead Island, with some extra things added to it.
