Banning sequels probably isn't worth losing half life 2, Civilization 3, and Super Mario Galaxy, but remakes should have the death penalty, preferably death by auto cannibalism.

I have to thank Yahtzee for drawing, not just my attention, but the full wrath of my being to the idea of quicktime events. Previously unimportant and given no more a thought then it took to hit the correct button, the addition of these events now cause me to cringe, and I'm not entirely sure why. Yes, button-mashing as a means to advance story or break-up shooters can be used to excess and can deny the player the opportunity to handle a situation in their own manner (i.e. the guns and ammo you've picked up along the way). Inclusion of this type of deus ex machina can be, however, understandable. Example, GTA: San Andreas, from the beginning of the game you are not afforded much occasion to use your new found ability to not drown in two feet of water until you reach San Fierro where you are not able to even start one mission until you have raised your previously useless as a sixth toe swimming ability to a point where, after 30 minutes of swimming in circles down at the virtual beach, you are now able to hold your breath longer than a fifty year smoker. That said, there is no quicktime solution to this problem, but there doesn't need to be. It immerses you deeper into the game. There are rewards to be gotten from swimming in GTA:SA, just as there are rewards to allowing your character in the game to figure out that they need to jump out of the way of a boulder by themselves. A reward such as continued life. But it takes time to learn and to succeed in these areas and it doesn't account for the "grading system" that many games with quicktime events have in them, and so "Hit A to Live" becomes a part of an otherwise mentally challenging game. effectively robbing you of actual game to play.

Fear 2 was rubbish, no suprise there. Only played the first one and that was garbage, and not scary at all. Sure the little girl is vaguely scary the first time if you've never seen "The Ring" but the 50th time she pops up it's like "oh god, here's another little girl bit, just get on with it and kill me or get lost".

Do developers not know about Zero Punctuation? Or are the production teams really that thick?
Maybe they know about it but ZP is not what I would call a high level of intellectual discussion on game design.

Nope, the game industry would be dead.
Yeah right. Good joke.
The game industry was built on the sequel model. No Mario series, no Zelda series, only the original Prince of Persia, only one Madden, NHL games that, like it or not, sell. People will buy franchises they trust.

Wow, the world would be better without sequels. But I'm not heading for law or medical school, so bring em on anyway.
A more pragmatic solution would be for the industry to move towards episodic gaming and DLC, perhaps with a rental model of consumption. After all, we accept Soap Operas going on for decades without closure, provided that story arcs within the soap get some temporary resolution, rested, then resurface after we have been distracted by the actions of other characters. It seems simple enough to me. Graphics engines will eventually become standardized and what you are paying for in a game will be all the actual content: story, characterization, sets, lighting, music, foley, costumes, etc.

A world without sequels. What an interesting thought. Would be nice to see the final installment of Shenmue now I think about it. Top notch review.

P.S - Just because some games carry a number in their title doesn't nessecarly make them a sequel e.g. Silent Hill 2 which was a completely different story to the original Silent Hill.

Ye but don't forget blizzard. They've been living off 3 games and their remakes for the past decade or so, they'd be broke by now.

Haha! Good times!

I played the original FEAR and it was good while it lasted. If this more of the same however I'll wait for a price drop...

The uneducated masses can get it for PC if they don't have a PS2. Just about any halfway-decent PC today can run it. And if they complain about the "shitty graphics", then they're probably not the type of people who would appreciate it.

They get banned for posting "first!" which adds absolutely nothing to the conversation, and/or posting before the amount of time it would take to watch the movie (the thread starts at the same time the video is posted).

Yes! A world without sequels would be a beautiful place. Companies wouldn't deign to drop the coolest of IP's involving people who bust spirits just because they are only interested in "sequel and franchise properties" and we would get much more innovation and variation.
Exactly. Honestly the only sequel/remake (whatever you want to call the series) I really hate is FIFA and every other sport game. I understand a new one every generation, but is there any reason to release a new one every year? Other than the money they make of course. Honestly they would be better off just releasing DLC which changes the year/updates player names/team shirts.

Over saturation kills. The fresh ideas are ignored mainly for the next sequel to whatever was last years big seller.

It wouldn't exist because every Final Fantasy past the first is (kinda, not really, but technically) a sequel. I can't pick up a Final Fantasy game anymore because it really makes me feel like I'm playing a rehash of a rehash. I mean, they're up to what? Thirteen? 21 if you count, The Two Crystal Chronicles games, The three Tactics games, DoC, X-2, and My Life as a King. Are they going for an unbreakable record or something? SE would just have to make actual names for their games now.

The only group of people who'd make me sad would be Capcom. They need sequels... As horrible as it might have gotten, I loved the Battle Network series (then Star Force killed it).

Not one of his best in my opinion, but still amusing. I liked the ED-209 reference, but I would have preferred a bit more actual game talk (aka bashing) as opposed to the tangents about super soldiers and sequels.

Wait, wasn't Ancel planning BGE as a trilogy before Ubisoft decided to focus on SplinterCell-PrinceOfPersia-Dogz for a few years before throwing the fans a bone? Also, wouldn't such a hypothetical universe be without the Lord of the Rings series, not to mention Wooster/Jeeves and Hornblower?

Again an awesome review and a video. I was already afraid I was just imagining the increase in quality after the disappointing end of '08 clips.

Anyhow, thanks for this one! Great job Yahtzee.

Thanks Yahtzee for saving me 50 bucks. I was considering buying fear 2 since I really liked the first one. But then again... I didn't like it enough to play the same game again and since the only real new thing would be the mecha-suits, I'll pass on this one. Or wait until I see the game for <10? in a bin somewhere. Given I'm really bored at that time.

But if there were no remakes or sequels, Capcom would have gone out of business at least a decade ago.

...

Wait, I wonder if that's really a bad thing...
Yes, Yes it is. That is a terrible thing.

Great ZP as usual. I thought the game was ok, but was too "consolised" on the PC. You can't even assign keys to the mouse 4 + 5 buttons. And QTE's are getting overused, it's a sad day when they intefere with PC gaming like fear did. It's one thing to pound a button on a controller, but to bash buttons on a mouse is something completely different and can result in broken mice.
