I like the way they did it in Left 4 Dead -- all ammo and items were left by other survivors, for any survivors that might come through after them (such as yourself). It helped give the sense that while your group was alone in a very real sense, that you aren't a part of a group of 4 people that are somehow the last remaining humans on Earth.

That way, if you actually manage to escape and get rescued, then you can co-mingle with all of the other dozens/hundreds/thousands of other survivors, and help rebuild society.

Depending on what game depends on the zombie ammo

Online - people who whored ammo end up getting killed quickly so zombies have a small cache

Resident evil - zombies like shiny things

How about a zombie game where you have to use your environment instead of heavy weaponry.
e.g.
Throwing stuff you find? snapping off a piece of wood or picking up a bit of pipe and using that as a weapon? a boomerang? a gun with limited ammo, which afterwards you can just throw at them? swords? knocking zombies off high buildings?
Sounds quite a bit like the penumbra series is for you. Although there are few enemies they are scary as hell, and in the second game it's impossible to kill them without hacking. take a look at the game you just described in pretty good detail. I also just learned that their making a third game with seems to have a fair bit more environmental interaction.

A Wizard did it.

I think that's just one of the game-play mechanics you're not suppose to question, just accept.

Like in Fallout 3 why did some office workers keep 5mm minigun rounds on their office drawer next to their coffee mug?
I swear that in one house I found a rocket in a bedside drawer. I can only guess that it belonged to the wife...

It is stupid, and I've often wondered about random ammo pick-ups myself, but without them the game would probably be a lot harder, like if you only found ammo in gun lockers etc.
On the subject of Fallout 3 and random item/ammo finding, I have found 10mm ammo in a filing cabinet before. That wasn't as odd or creepy as the hockey mask and switchblade in a suitcase, though.

On the subject of random ammo in RE4, it is so you don't have to be stuck with just your knife, which is nice.

I think you may be onto something.

He probably left all the ammo there to ensure you'd get to his castle, so he could get some use and entertainment out of the maze in his garden.

What's the point of having a maze in your garden without anyone to torment?

There's a game coming out called 'Dead Island' I hear is supposed to be somewhat like that. You should check it out.

In most zombie games, a lot of people knew about the zombies and prepared for them, hence in L4D you find military grade shotguns in the sewer, someone tried to bunker down there with a nice gun hoping to outlast the apocalypse

Why do so many people in America have guns and ammo? It's just a bad idea all around.

You know I think you just found out where all the ammo comes from. One american was on vacation and brought some of his gun collection.

I guess this man was dick cheney.

It's partly to prepare for the eventual zombie apocalypse. We're just preparing for the inevitable.

On the constitutional front, we have private ownership of firearms in order to protect our country from enemies of the republic. This may mean foreign invasion. It can also mean protecting ourselves from a totalitarian government. The Swiss have their firearms for this reason as well.

On a more pragmatic side, we have private ownership of firearms for home defense and self defense. There are statistics and studies that show that increased ownership of firearms in a particular area of the country leads to a reduction of violent crime, if all other factors remain the same.

And you could name it smoething like... like... Rising Dead! That would be awesome! Or "corpses lifting themselves up," but that doesnt have the same ring.

And the reasont you always find ammo is because there is always one extremly unlucky bastard who stumbles into every zombie apocolypse imagined. This has led to him having holes in his extremley large pockets(parachute pants), and all the ammo he has constantly drops out, which causes him to get more. Thus, the ammo. also, the zombies sometimes steal his ammo.

That. Criminals will carry guns regardless of whether they're legal or not because they're criminals.

Also, aren't the Swiss all issued rifles by the government? I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

I wish there was a zombie game where I destroyed Halos to save the universe.
There is already. It's called life.

1. Zombies = Halo fanboys.
2. Halos = CDs with Halo 1/2/3.
3. Universe = Earth, or at least gaming world.

Zzzzing.
