I dunno, doesn't look very realistic. I hear the BF nerds are big on that

Joking aside, it looks...fine? I'm sure it'll shooty-bang just fine, it's all the underlying systems I'm curious about,

While I am ecstatic that Battlefield is coming back the modern era, or at least near future, there are quite a few gameplay details that I am worried about.

I can't believe they're essentially dropping the class based gameplay. Yeah sure, the specialists will be more or less classified into the traditional classes. But allowing players to choose any weapon for their specialist? And any secondary gadgets? The specialists will all have unique "traits" and appearances too. Sounds way too much like a hero shooter, and we have enough of those games. And of course, this system would allow them to integrate shitty skins into the game. So much for spotting an enemy and immediately knowing what abilities and weaponry they're packing.

128 players sounds cool in theory, especially with how they're changing up how the game modes work, but this is DICE's first attempt at it. I don't really have any confidence in them to do it right the first time around. The thought of 128 players having access to grenades...

The weather levelution looks just as disposable as it did in BF4. Nothing more than a gimmick to entertain newcomers and look "good" (cuz honestly the tornado looked terrible) in trailers. I would have much preferred a bigger focus on destruction, which has not been mentioned yet as far as I know. Nothing says "Battlefield Moment" by getting rid of a camper by levelling the building they're in.

Oh well I guess we will see. The biggest appeal of Battlefield for me was the gunplay. Not as thoughtless as CoD, not as hardcore as Arma. A good balance where you can still feel rewarded for improving your skill without having guns that recoil to high heaven. Worst case scenario, I pick this game up a few years after launch.

EDIT: Ah, I completely forgot about no singleplayer. That ensures that I will not be picking this up for full price. On the other hand though, DICE has said that they will finally implement bots once again. Not Titanfall style bots, but bots meant to simulate actual players. Which honestly is really cool. If you don't mind so much playing against bots, you'll never run out of servers to play in, something that happened to me for BF4. Queue times might even be non-existent. I just hope DICE has some proper AI for these bots.

I don't think I've had a proper game of Battlefield since my high school days. It was the last day of the year and most of our year pissed off to cyber cafes after the bell and we played Desert Combat together. It was great fun helicopter dropping into the enemy team's base and planting mines on all their vehicles...

I did redeem Battlefront 2 when it was free but I never bothered to install it.

I guess I did play Onslaught in UT2k4, which is a Battlefield-esque mode. But that was also a long-ass time ago.

I always toyed with the idea of getting a Battlefield game, but never did because I hate the idea of installing Origin. Though I ended up installing it to try out Apex Legends when all my friends hopped on it anyway....

All the Battlefield games are on Steam now. Methinks Origin exclusivity is a thing of the past now.

Don't you still have to install Origin to launch them even if you buy them off Steam? I redeemed Battlefront 2 off the Epic Game Store and hey ho, I still need to use Origin....

That I do not know. I have Bad Company 2 on Steam and it seems to work fine without Origin, but it is an older game.

I don't really get why it's 2042. Nothing in the trailer was particularly futuristic. Where's my Mecha? Or Titans or something. Also fuck tornados. Let me guess incoming run away from the tornado battle Royale mode. EA, (cause let's be honest, you murdered DICE and buried the body on jakku.) when all your barely maintained base migrates to 1 or 2 maps because they're the only balanced maps every game..Well then get your shit together, get it all together and put it in a back pack, all your shit, so it's together...and if you gotta take it some where, take it somewhere, you know, take it to the shit store and sell it, or put it in the shit museum. I don't care what you do, you just gotta get it together.

Unless the unrevealed mode is Titan wars or something I think this is yet another I'll be skipping.
This really does feel like EA went "Oh maybe we do one set more in the future, but not so far in the future the Modern Military shooter fans refuse to play it because they don't like Sci-Fi mechs." Try to go for a best of both world where the people who want another one like 2142 will get it because it's the closest too it it's been for a while.

A lot of people are complaining about characters being "specialists" with distinct identities instead of being "just another soldier on the field", and it kind of surprises me that I agree with them. DICE is probably trying to appeal to the hero-shooter crowd (and making plans for cosmetic microtransactions).
Lol how many bloody lenses do they need on a helmet.
More lenses = more tactical!

The response to the specialists is big enough for me to wonder if DICE will have second thoughts. Probably not, since it's how they plan to monetize the game.

Personally I don't see how playing as actual characters adds any value. They have the technology to let you choose any gender or ethnicity for your player, which could have been a first and a significant improvement for the series. Why they chose to have 128 people playing the same 10 people is beyond me.

Rats. No campaign. I stink too badly at gaming, much as I love doing it, to play on line with other. But I watched this trailer and compared it to Battlefield V and graphically? It looks like they've come a long way.

That's actually one of the reasons I like battlefield post BF2. They balanced it so that much of the gameplay and XP progression revolves around team work and objectives. I don't have to be "gud" to have fun. I used to play fps competitively but I'm too old for that twitch gameplay. BF lets me just play as a helper, engineer, support guy and still have a good time. It's been hit and miss over the last couple years, but this still fairly true. I like BFBC2 and BF4 the most. I could pretty easiest get MVP without even having a positive KDR.

BFV had it's moments. I could still have fun doing sneaky captures, but it was kind of a jumbled mess as far as gameplay and maps. I felt like just playing a support role wasn't as fun or balanced because of all the bugs and gun balancing issues.

I dunno how effect support roles can be in a 128-player game. Overwatch works well because the teams are very small, but on such a massive scale I find it hard to grasp how a support can have any real impact on such a huge clusterfuck.

I just got BFV, I think with PS+. I have BFWW1 and BF4 on PC. I've only played campaign. You're inspiring me to check out the online. As long as no one is depending upon me!

It's hard to describe unless you've played a lot of battlefield.

The main conquest and rush modes are really all about capturing and destroying control points. Honestly the more players the better for support roles. It's easier to sneak around getting lost in the chaos. Hard to catch you belly crawling across the map when there's a 100 people shooting at each other's.

I'm seeing now they're also bringing back the medic class which could end up being terrible or awesome also, again more players the better for that class. Support becomes really fundamental when people dying in waves and if supports not there to heal, revive and act as a spawn point respawn delay can cause a massive shift in control of the map. In BFBC2 you could hilariously form a human choo-choo train of medics reviving each other while charging across the map and they had to nerf medics.

Honestly I've never actually played a story campaign in BF but I've been playing since 1942 before you had campaign the joy I get in the game is playing a pivotal support role in winning these massive battles. It kind of is its own mini-story. Pilots and drivers will tell you the same thing. I've had friends that never actually leave their helicopters spending entire matches shipping people around and fighting vehicle battles. Those weirdos literally have a whole cockpit at their desks with flight sticks and all.

If I had to give you any advice playing online first time, when you join a battle before you spawn look at the squads. Make sure you join one don't play by yourself. Also try to find ones that seems to be moving cohesively. There's usually a sneaky squad ignoring the battle and just working together to capture objectives. The leader will mark objectives for you and you get XP and such for helping out. If all else fails you wanna just keep going back to map and find places where there's things you can help out with.

Thanks! I needed that advice. Now I do recall doing BF1. It was like that Abbot & Costello skit where they try betting on horse races (voice over loud speaker, "the flag is waved, they're off, you lose") I would spawn/respawn and within 30 seconds I was dead. Joining a squad may help me live some.
