Being on a basketball tangent things are not looking good for Team USA basketball in the first two exibition games against NIgeria and Austraila.. Now I know its just exibition so maybe nothing to worry about but there is some top talent from Durant, Beal and my personal favorite DAME DOLLAR with coach Pop. So this is not a great start for USA but maybe other countries basketball culture is on the come up and the NBA wheel of international talent just keeps rolling.

Also I don't basketball is alone that descriptions can describe soccar or fubol the worlds most popular sport, hockey, hell volleyball even. Basketball is still a team sport because you can have top tier player of all time but if the other 4 are trash then nothing comes of it.
Yeah, I understand that, but basketball, while not unique in this aspect, is a sport where players tend to be the face of the team more so than the team itself, and those top-tier players seem to dictate where they go for overtly selfish reasons. It's common in basketball; loyalties are fickle, but take a sport like football (the NFL,) players like Aaron Rogers sitting out to get their way tend to be more the exception than the rule.

That is because the NFL is way tighter and restrictive on what players have a say in their contract. If NFL player contracts had any leeway that NBA contracts plenty would tell their organizations to kick rocks than put up with upper office nonsense.

And I hope Aaron Rodgers does get his way not just because his abscence from the NFC North means the division belongs to my Bears.....it does.
Overall Rodgers has been wanting out for a while yet still busted his ass and kept that team relevant with playoff appearances and was again jerked around by the upper office until enough is enough. This situation did not just come out of thin air.

I agree, hence the NBA "star power" that creates the "player before team" mentality, the expectations that the "greats" are expected to achieve greatness and why the greats consume so much of the conversation every year. It's one of many reason I don't like the NBA; it's a "me" league, and that's just not interesting to watch beyond being such a back-and-forth game to spectate. Also the flopping; I'm sorry, when drawing/faking an incidental foul that slows the pace of an already drudge of a game is a tactic, I'm out. Yes, I know flopping isn't unique to the NBA, but at least in a sport like football you're in full contact with 250-300lbs men where serious injury is a real danger every single snap; in basketball, someone elbows your ribs, and you're suddenly on the ground in agony until a ref gives you some free throws.

And I hope Aaron Rodgers does get his way not just because his abscence from the NFC North means the division belongs to my Bears.....it does.

Ah, so you've a stake in his getting out; I see. I don't care either way (49ers fan, and we've had his number quite a few times,) but good luck. I suspect he'll remain a cheeshead this year, though...

First part is mostly a joke but I am sincere when I say the whole Rodgers situation was going to come to this eventually. Even if he stays that is just carry a bad vibes in locker room and up top. Been interesting to keep up with overall.

So Messi decided to stick with Barca, with a pretty big paycut. Honestly was hoping he'd try something new, but I guess he's a little too old for that.

I agree. They just expected his talent to carry the team without investing in weapons for him to work with. You could see him getting progressively frustrated over the years, and, after seeing Tom Brady make his move after two decades with the same team, it became more and more possible Rogers might grow the cojones to do the same.

If I had a nickel for every time there's some story about Messi changing teams I'd be rich enough to make it true.

One of the best players ever, top scorer (tied)/assists/shots per match this Copa América, but given his age he probably has just the one World Cup to go. After that it's time to go train private teams in Dubai.

I'd prefer if he just straight up retired instead of going to some random team in China or the US. God knows he doesn't need any more money, dude should just enjoy life.

Me too. But the reality of hotshots like him has always been they retire by 40 and then get co-opted by some eccentric third world Midas to coach a hopeless team. That and ads for Swatch or whatever.

For what it's worth he seems infinitely more stable and sensible than the type, and the media's always painted him as a quiet down to earth family guy married to his hottie childhood sweetheart who stays out of the spotlight and away from politics. A far cry from the coked out, battery-happy rockstar glamor of Diego the Hutt.

I know this is stupid, but I can't wait to see what this is going to be about. I signed up to receive a "phone call" from Valtteri Bottas two hours before Sunday's 8:00am CST race. I'm not naïve; I do not expect to hear from the man himself, but I'm curious what Formula 1 put together for such a publicity stunt. (Also, I don't want to miss the race! Too often, I oversleep, check Facebook, and end up seeing race results before being able to watch the recording; if Bottas wants to call me and wake me up? Yes, please!)

Well, the venue that hosts the Phoenix Suns here got a new name, and boy it sucks: Footprint Center

Well, not a fan of basketball, but even less of a fan of terrible names, and holy shit is "Footprint Center" a stinker. First Bank-One Ballpark and now this.

I guess the fans will either come up with a name that sounds better or just call it the old stadium. I mean if ask any White Sox fan its either Comisky Park not US Celluar Field or the worst Guaranteed Rate Field .

Fairly decent weekend of Formula 1, I guess. Bottas managed a convincing P3, but not without its controversies...

First race with sprint qualifying. I don't know how I feel about it. It feels... redundant? I mean, you put the drivers and cars through the motions to qualify just to then race to qualify? Feels like a bit of a stretch and an unnecessary risk. Doesn't really help that the sprint didn't mix things up that much; everyone ended where they pretty much started.

"Sir" Lewis Hamilton received a 10-second penalty for the incident between himself and Max Verstappen in Silverstone yesterday, and still managed a comeback and win. I'm not a fan of Hamilton's, but even I call bullshit on that penalty. The guys were RACING, and Verstappen, trying to occupy more of the track than the physical attributes of his car allowed, wrecked; it happens; it's why a lot of people watch. I don't know what the FIA looks at to assign blame, but what they had was two aggressive drivers fighting for position... that's racing; that's why people pay the exorbitant prices to spectate. Do boxers get penalized for hitting too hard? Do baseball players get fined for hitting the ball too far away? Do soccer players get penalized for kicking the ball too hard? If the rule going forward in F1 is to give the "ole" to anyone threatening your position, then what's the fucking point?

And of course, because people are shit, Hamilton was the recipient of a lot of racist backlash on social media. I swear, this world would be a lot better off without most of its people.

Wish it had been more of a fight, but congrats to the Bucks. Giannis is really cementing his domination over the league.

I don't know I wanted a game 7 but damn all games in the series were certified bangers not a bad game to be found. I thought Phx was going to take it but then Giannis said 50pts. Best finals in a long time.

Welp, I was completely wrong. Well played Bucks, well deserved. I think Phoenix should be determined after that though. That's a championship winning core, a few smart moves and they'll win one easy.
Although, I have a bad feeling this series is going to push ring culture to its extreme. I'm ready seeing "Giannis is the greatest PF of all time and Chris Paul has always been trash" takes making the rounds. Hopefully its just enthusiasm after a finals series and not the narrative people believe.

Also, Im pretty new to hockey, and I think this Seattle expansion draft is the perfect introduction for me to the sport. The Kraken hasn't even played a game yet and they're already caught up in a trade drama. Sign me the fuck up. My brother has always been an Avs fan but I think I just go out of my way to get a Kraken jersey just to piss him off.

I tried to get into hockey way back in the day when the league expanded into my home town of Columbus, Ohio with the Blue Jackets, but I couldn't get it to stick. It's just not exciting to spectate on television. However, several years ago when I was relatively new to Texas, the Dallas Stars were playing the Blue Jackets, and some unfounded hometown pride welled in me. I was the only person cheering for the Blue Jackets in the whole pub, and they ended up winning, much to the chagrin of the Stars fans, and I ate it up. Outside of that one game, though, I really can't get into it. Same reason I can't get into soccer; there's a lot of action, but not enough happening, i.e.: you can watch for almost 2 hours and maybe see 1 or 2 goals?

That's fair enough though. My brother has always said to enjoy hockey you need to train yourself to see the puck on tv/at the games. I can see why having to learn something like that would some people off trying to get into it. Probs doesn't help that the Blue Jackets always seem to have always been trash (no offence)

I feel like football is something Americans struggle with because of the exact reasons you say. In American-centric sports a player could scratch their chin and there would probably be a stat to account for that action. In football Ronaldo or Messi could make a brilliant run through the midfield that would be the absolute highlight of the game, but that isn't counted as a stat, just a highlight. Doesn't make one better than the other, but in action play isn't continually counted in stats in football, only absolutes. That's changed recently with obsessions with xG (expected goals per 90mins) and defensive stats being looked at more closely, but it's no where near the levels of something like baseball which has a million different ways of evaluating a player. Again, it's not a better or worse way of watching sport, just a cultural difference.

Oh, no offence taken; I already said I'm not a fan. I couldn't name a single Blue Jackets player if you held a gun to the stomach of my pregnant wife (not married or expecting, just letting you know how far removed I am from any sort of loyalty to a franchise within a sport I couldn't care less about if I tried.)

I think Americans struggle appreciating soccer because we're used to sports that have overtly dominant players who consistently net results and are game changers. Like, when a team gets into the red zone in football (NFL,) it's not a matter of if, but WHEN they break the plane and put up points. Or big plays that shorten the field, or amazing catches that make highlight reels for the next week before the next round of games. Soccer, it just feels like both teams are up against insurmountable odds, trying to find that rare window when an attack actually does something to affect the course of the game; those moments are too few and far between to hold [my] attention. When a goal is scored, it's only exciting because of how unlikely it was, and that's not appealing to me (like the episode of The Office where the entire conference room is just waiting for the floating DVD symbol on the TV to hit the corner perfectly; rewarding to witness, but the time leading up to could have been better spent.) If that's a cultural thing, fine, I guess. But I don't like basketball for the same reasons; it's too back and forth, and between the flopping/fouls and the constant screeching of their shoes on the court, the game just feels... needlessly protracted? I like sports where I can see a plan unfolding, but dozens of guys standing in a field kicking a ball around or slapping a puck to the mostly likely, open person only to net a couple points over the course of HOURS if they're lucky? I'll wait and watch the highlights.

Funny thing is, my grandfather actually played for Panama's national team back in his day. That alone has made me really want to appreciate soccer, but I just can't do it. My dad now roots for Brazil (because he's a traitor,) and I root with him 'cuz I love the guy. Other than that, I'm out on soccer too.
