I didn't find Dead Space to be all that exceptional when it came out. All the scares felt telegraphed and the game just could not wait to get its monsters right out in front of you so that you could appreciate all the work that went into making them. The second game did a far better job at tension and suspense, and the third game never happened.

They were fun games in a fun setting, but nothing particularly special. Gameplay was more or less just resident evil and story was half life ish, they were just solid game. Its a bit weird that so many spiritual successor are coming out at the same time, but that's mostly because EA abandoned a product that was proven to be successful, so its easy for smaller team to justify making it since they know it'll do well while they though they wouldn't have any competition.

Dead Space 2 did have better suspense, but it still got a little jump scare happy. The first game had a couple of good jumps, but went overboard on the scare chord.

Dead Space is basically RE4 combined with System Shock 2. It was originally supposed to be SS3. but Visceral and EA could not get the license. A big feature DS has over RE4 is moving and shooting at the same time, and no QTE insta-kills. Action commands if you're being grabbed, but not insta-death QTEs. Funny enough, RE5 and RE6 borrowed the "bringing up the inventory does not pause the game feature" from Dead Space. So it had a big influence on the industry. The reason why there are so many spiritual successors is because so many people care or are hardcore fans of the franchise.

Yes. Especially when the AAA companies put a top premium or charge even more, while cutting content out.
