With the help and advice of @09philj I got Doom 2 today for $5 from Steam, downloaded https://www.moddb.com/mods/gzdoom GZDoom which allows Doom 2 to play on my system and then got the Russian Overkill mod that gives you crazy weapons. https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=29915& I used a trial copy of Win-Rar to unzip it. You have your Doom 2 files in the GZDoom folder. Drag and drop the RO.pk3 file directly onto the gzdoom executable.
Further information included, " It autosaves. In the Russian Overkill menu "Lights Out Comrade" is save and "Did we drink yesterday" is load. "Means of drinking" is the main options and "Real Soviet Stuff" is mod specific options. The secondary fire, reload, and zoom buttons activate additional features on most weapons, make sure they're all bound to accessible buttons in "Means of Drinking". "
I have not seen this game in dog's age.
G-d mode works (shift tilde to bring up the dos window and type in g-d without the -).

There's a launcher called ZDL that lets you load multiple PK3 and WAD files. Way easier than doing the drag-n-drop.
