So I am gonna structure my review a bit different this time; I am gonna start with a perfect score of 100, and take off 5 points each time the game pisses me off. That’s right, this game has 20 chances for me to find at least some salvageable parts about the game. The game will also have a chance of earning the lost points, but it would have to be pretty significant.
So before you can evne play the game, you gotta have phone number for “extra security. That’s already the first offense. Way to enforce giving out personal info there, Acti-Blizz! The irony is hilarious. (-5)
So as soon as the game boots up, you are placed in a queue of about “40000 players” ahead of you. It’s not that long. Obviously folks at Acti-Blizz didn’t anticipate such back-up! /s That’s already one thing that annoys me (-5). We’re off to a fine start. Acti-Blizz as of writing this post is blaming it on a DDOS attack. Yep, they are saying “We got hacked, lol!” instead of actually admitting their piss-poor management. Off with more points! (-5) Yeah, it will get resolved eventually, but it’s amazing how under prepared they were. WTF. And the attempt for connection is affecting my network as a whole. I really can’t do anything else on my pc. So that’s another 5 points off! (-5) We haven’t even gon into the game yet but it already lost 20 points. Fantastic
Probably two weeks later when you finally get in, the game shoves itself in your face with all the typical live-service bullshit. “Buy our premium battle pass!” “Upgrade your experience with battle pass”, etc. That automatically earns another few points off! (-5)
And the first OW game was sacrificed for this game. Even if you had physical copy, it would just automatically boot up the second game. The first game is now completely lost! I won’t pretend OW didn’t have any issues, but at least it had its charms. And now its all gone. (-5) And Acti-Blizz just created thousands, if not millions, of disc wastes around the world. BAD Acti-Blizz, BAD! More points off with you for contributing to real-world problem! EXTRA points off, in fact! (-10)
Since the game advertised about its singleplayer campaign elements, I decided to check them out first. After all, the game has been building its world and characters with the animated shorts and comics. They had the alright idea in the first game with those operation events, and I was hoping they would expand on that. Finally, I can explore the world in-game, right?
NOPE. The campaign is not included at launch, which is pure bullshit. This is something I just don’t understand. I mean they saw what happened with Halo Infinite right? Why release the multiplayer portion first? I really wanted to get to know the world of Overwatch better, and now I have to wait probably 3+ months until I see the first bit of story content. This one earns extra points deducted from me. One for teasing me with the campaign in the first place and another for not having it in the first place (-10)
Now let’s move on to the main controversy with the game, the f2p live-service element. Let me preface by saying f2p model can work well. Games like Destiny 2, League of Legends, and Apex Legends manages keep their playerbase alive and healthy. However, it’s what’s in the game that makes players keep coming back. And just like halo infinite management, this game offers too little to justify the free price tag. And technically it’s not even free since they are gonna condition the players to pay for the cosmetic using the FOMO tactics. Because EVERYTHING that’s doesn’t affect gameplay, is locked behind paywall That’s another (-5) for me. And if you are truly new, as in someone who never played the first game, you will have contents suchs as a new hero actually locked behind the premium battle pass. So that’s another -5 for contradiction on “cosmetic items only” statement when it comes to the MTX. Also, fucking $5 for a gold doomfist skin? REALLY? (-5)
And they have the audacity to have separate currency for the league skins. Some of these league skins do look amazing, but it's also crazy you have to shill out more money to get them. Just No (-5)
Challenges can be completed to earn the currency for shop stuff, but first of all they are weekly and second they only give so little meaning you have to grind. And each of them were made to be grindy individually. To put it in the perspective, If you complete 11 weekly challenges the max you’ll earn is 60 coins. And a single legendary skin costs 1900 coins. This means you have to grind for 8 months FOR A SINGLE SKIN. FUCK THAT (-5). This is made worse when you find out premium battle pass only costs 1000 coins. You heard that right. A single legendary skin is almost double the price of a premium battle pass. (-5) Holy fucking shit, they didn’t just take a page from Halo Infinite, they wrote an entire sequel to it! All this to not point get people to buy the premium pass, but also to have them purchase the in-game currency as well (-5)
Gameplay…. Oh my god, the gameplay. As it was announced, they reduced the matches to be 5v5 instead of 6v6. While this is fine for a casual match, custom match, or even arcade, it seriously fucks up the team comp in competitive. No matter how well you think the team will be, there always will be that one extra position you wish could’ve been there. It just feels like one of those games where it was meant to be 6v6, and they are forcing two less players. So far, no one can figure out how to re-build the team around this fact (can’t blame anyone though), and I’m willing to bet it will take a long time until they do. That’s another (-5). And let’s not forget how this is gonna affect the OWL. I do not care about OWL enough to affect this review, but now each team has to figure out what to do with the extra member in the team. Do they need to force closing the contract with the extra member? Do they need to keep them as a reserve at lower pay?
Since this is a competitive multiplayer, I expected a fair amount of negativity. But dear god, the toxicity is worse than the first game. Al I did was ask if Solder 76 was good for defending, and I got a slew of slurs both in chat and on voice. Yes, I can always mute them, but that’s like plugging my ears and going “Alalalalalahaha, can’t hear you!”. It doesn’t fix the core problem. (-5)
Arcade mode feels pointless. In the first game it at least had the purpose of giving out lootboxes. Here, there are no lootboxes, so it only gives extra xp, with no rewards towards the currency. And they aren’t really that fun either. All the gamemodes feel like those experimental games that no one really wants to play (-5)
As for the heroes, they are all hit-and-miss. There are some reworks that feels great, while others feel unnecessary. Since they all seem to balance each other out, no points deducted here. Although the overall design of some heroes does look kinda bad
Maps are okay I guess. I mean there are the old maps from the first game, but not all of them have been transferred here. I wonder why? I only assume it’s either due to not really working on 5v5 setting, or they are being held hostage at the future battle pass. There are total of 25 maps, where 4 are themed-version of the original maps, 15 are the original, and only 6 are new maps. Really, this does not feel like OW2. (-5)
Graphics are fine, and that’s the problem here; It’s nearly identical to that of the first game. It tricks you into thinking there are improvements with new character designs and lighting effects, but if you take a close look you’ll realize how lazy they are in terms of graphics. Is this also because the game is f2p? Has the resources improving graphics been moved for more live service bullshit? (-5)
So yeah, -10/100. Fuck this game. Actually, don’t fuck it. It really is not worth your time nor attention. Treat it like an STD; The only one getting fucked over is you. Unless you are REALLY into competitive hero-shooter, and willing to ignore all of is problems, this game really has no redeeming values.
